Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

The ONLY reason why I own PS5 is for 3rd party Japanese games and nothing else.
Only reason i bought my ps5 was to play better versions of my ps4 library and ff7r and ff16 , almost same thing with my ps4 aside from FS games was mainly for better ps3 games like ff14 ,gta5 and dcuo

Microsoft's failure this gen is the worst thing that could possibly happen to consumers. Right now, there's literally no real alternative to the PS5 if you want a high-quality console. The Switch 2 is fine, but at the moment it still miss a lot of major third-party titles.

I hate Phil. I also hate Herman. Those guys need to go ASAP. Why the hell are they still employed?

Gonna pop in either the SoTC remake of the MGS HD collection to celebrate Bluepoint's great work.

Sony really shat the bed.

Yeah, I honestly thought Bluepoint was working on GoW Remake Trilogy. The timeline even seemed to line up, since it's in early development and their live service God of War was recently cancelled. But, nope, guess I was being too optimistic.
You and me both, feels bad man. It would've been too perfect of a marriage. But we are in the fucked up timeline now, circa 2012 collider.

If Helldivers 2 had cross-progression to the PC, GT7 had a PC port with VR, and GTA6 was coming out day and date on there as well, I'd jump ship fully right now.

Maybe I shouldn't say the HD2 one out loud. Then it will never come.

Not even Naughty Dog has me "oh I need to have this" like they once did with Uncharted and TLoU. Intergalactic (at the moment) doesn't have that same spark. Especially with the typical condescending character reveal.

I got another year of Gamefly so I'll decide next year if I stick with PS or not. So it comes down to physical games and trophy hunting. That's what is left of PlayStation for me. It's sad.

But you don't really need a first party to make the remakes, that's what companies like Digital Eclipse do (well, might not be the perfect example but I don't see the point in buying a company to exclusively work on them).

They did it best in the entire industry. But you sure as hell can outsource a half assed ue 5 remake. So yeah every future sony remake can gtfo.

They could've had them doing soo much more this generation but instead they fucking wasted them on another shitty cancelled GaaS.

It's hard to not be pessimistic about the future of PlayStation. The speed of their decline is shocking and it doesn't seem like PS6 will improve things, as the challenge of creating unique or competitive hardware now seems much higher than creating appealing games.

I really think Sony is moving in a direction where they want to own less studios inhouse and do more second party partnerships instead where they have more flexiblity to work with different partners and only commit to them one game at a time.

Extremely disappointing. Waiting years for their next amazing remake and just... puff... And this after Sony's first party games are getting very underwhelming as we go through this generation.

A truly baffling decision. A port/remaster studio of this caliber is a real asset for someone in Sony's position. Any failure to leverage that asset is an upper management problem.

Bluepoint was primarily a remaster and remake studio and probably not capable to develop a completely new title or a forced live-service (GaaS) game.

They might have been kept around as a support studio, but I suspect the Dutch man Hermen Hulst intends to shift such projects to also Dutch Nixxes.
Nixxes is already supporting the Saros project and working on soon to be released Death Stranding: on the Beach PC port.

I think Sony was quite pleased with Nixxes work on Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, a Remaster that nobody really asked for, but one that proved Nixxes can handle more than just PC ports.
If Sony continues with releasing PC ports, I believe Nixxes will handle future PC ports as well as some remasters and remakes. Remakes, of course, can still be done internally, just as Naughty Dog did with The Last of Us for PS5.

Bluepoint's role in this story was finished: Game Over.

I don't often encounter headlines that make me go "what the actual fuck" but this is one

Instead of any one their failing gaas studios they actually shut a studio that has consistently done valuable, successful projects

Sums it up for me as well. I own hundreds of physical games. I also have a big steam libary but physical is still special to me. But it cant carry the shit hole endlessly for me.

At this point I'm more interested in next-gen Xbox than PS6

If you told me I'd be saying that a year ago I would've said you're insane

Sony's upper management probably demanded some firings after all the GAAs loses and they chose to shut down this studio.

Hermen Hulst' job and his millions are fine though guys, don't worry.

After my initial "wtf" reaction to the closure, I realized I need questions answered before I rage about it.

For starters, was Bluepoint forced to do a live service game or did they choose to? Bluepoint made it clear that they aspired to move out of remakes and remasters into creating original games. They may have seen an opportunity there and took it. If so, and the project failed, then that's on them. If Sony railroaded them into it, then that's shitty and fuck their leadership for that.

After that project failed, did Bluepoint offer up a good idea? Did they turn down an offer from Sony to go back into their familiar territory and do a remake?

This situation also tracks with how Sony has been handling their studios in more recent times. You get less of a pass than you used to. All of their studios are under more strict scrutiny than the days of having a low impact studio for 10 or more years. If you're failing to produce and you don't have a big legacy or your most recent game wasn't a good seller, you're probably done.

Regardless, this sucks.

Maybe look at a major franchises like DK bonanza and mario tennis they ain't selling too hot on switch 2 as well. bloodborne and elden ring are not impressive looking games technically and sold amazing on PlayStation.
Bananza sold 4 million copies as of last year. Likely 5 million plus by now and it'll keep selling well into the Switch 2's lifetime like most Nintendo games do.

Bananza also isn't costing Nintendo $200 million dollars to make.

Nor does Nintendo expect the Mario Sports games to sell gangbusters. The entire Mario Golf Series has sold under 10 million. Tennis series is under 15 million.

I think Mario Tennis Fever selling 2-5 million in it's lifetime is a success for Nintendo. Imagine that, developing a game with a lower budget in mind and being happy to turn a profit.

Sony could've left them alone and let them keep doing remakes independently. Instead of buying them, fucking them, and leaving the corpse in the alley

This fucking sucks.

Congrats to Sony on wasting one of their most talented studios. Few studios did their job better than them.

Jim Ryan and his GAAS initiative really fucked over PlayStation.

Xbox fanboys are gonna have a field day with this. It's well deserved.

Damnnnnn. I rejoice every time a live service game dies and then shudder when the studio connected to it gets the axe. So much talent and livelihoods being wasted :'(

So Bluepoint was not working on the new GOW remake. Hmmmm....

Sony making money hand over fist, in the console war lead, they are doing juuuuust fine ;)

Sorry i wanted to add this isn't just a jab at Sony, just think it fucking sucks.

As i said in an earlier post, these companies going full retard this gen.

Sony don't care about heritage anymore. They don't care about planting seeds. They don't care that having the critically acclaimed games, even if they only sell 1m copies and only make a small profit, are what builds a company. The good vibes and positive word of mouth and legacy lasting generations can't be displayed on a Q4 report so they simply do not care.
