Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

I don't know why anyone in this thread is actually surprised?

We've been complaining for years that all Sony does is make remakes and remasters.. and now they're axing a studio that only does remakes and remasters so they can invest in other areas...?

Besides the redundancies (they'll find another job), why is this a bad thing? If studios can't make media properties that deliver financial performance, they have to be let go.

You can't carry losses forever.

Media Molecule is likely next, and then Bungie if Marathon fails. It is what it is.

Its really up to Japan Sony head, to really fire Herman. But Japan culture dont like firing people. Maybe just demote him more.

I long for the day that we will again have a Japanese head for all Sony gaming. Damn this Hermen dude, who will now push for the ugly horizon gathering.

I'm not particularly convinced. Is a man or woman 45-plus going to spend more on live service games just because they play less than they did 5 years ago? I fail to see the correlation. If anything I'd wager they're not interested in jumping into a competitive online arena with a lobby of annoying teenagers.
They do talk about older gamers being a worse market than younger gamers for a variety of reasons. Younger people play and spend more. Few are chomping at the bit for the 45+ gamer.
Not only that, but completion rate has no connection to revenue as the game has already been purchased whether it's completed or not.
I think you're less likely to buy new games if you say to yourself "I didn't even beat game X or game Y yet. I should beat those first before buying a new game." That is directly related to revenue.

People only complained when games that didnt need remakes/remasters got it. Look at the reception for the GoW trilogy, people are hyped.

Demons Souls is still the best looking PS5 game, SotC was also really well received.

Sony first party is irrelvant

Without competition from Xbox - what is the point of niche studios?

Only big hitters will matter

I predict in the following years

  • Guerilla will start licensing Decima to third parties cheaper than Unreal (after Horizon fortnite flops)
  • Bend will shut down (without releasing a game)
  • Media Molecule will FOR SURE shut down (without releasing a game)
  • Haven Studios will shut down (Fair Game$ will not release)
  • Firwalk Studios will shut down (without releasing a game)
  • Firesprite will become a support studio
  • Naughty Dog will downsize to one team
  • Bungie will be downsized even more (but a core team will work on Destiny 3 while D2 dies and Marathon trucks on)
  • Nixxes will flourish with contract work
It will be at least 7 years between TLOU 2 and Intergalactic. naughty dog is already one team only (unless you drink the stupid PS fanboys kool aid of course)

We actually need to use the fact Gaf is so well known to push back against this decision by Sony, Bluepoint are very technically accomplished, it's not their fault that Hulst has mismanaged them, Sony should have had them on a Bloodborne remake as soon as they finished Demons Souls

Media Molecule, Bend and Haven should've gotten this treatment before Bluepoint

Reddit and Twatter have bigger socal influence than GAF. Post in those places about skipping Marathon and Saros in protest of this bullshit

At least 9 out of 10 times a studio like these are bought, it ends in disappointment.

So many things these guys could have worked on, even just remakes of games would have been fine.

I really enjoy playing demon's souls so cheers to blue point, gone but not forgotten.

Sony acquiring Bluepoint specifically to do quality remakes and remasters only to discover they have nothing to remake or remaster because Playstation was built on third party strength is Peak 2026 Sony
They have 3 franchises stuck on PS3 that people have been asking for. Plus the elephant in the room (Bloodborne)

These retards in studios like Bluepoint need to see themselves for what they are. You're a remake studio, remake actual masterpieces with modern graphics. That's it. Stop getting these ideas that you can do something knew. They should have asked Sony for the next remake and left it at that. Don't waste resources on some big new project.
What a shit take. You know nothing of what Sony asked them to do. Get a life

That's the thing though, they have plenty of games they could remake, remaster or make a new game out of. The problem comes down to how do you turn Sly Cooper into a live service $15million+ selling franchise

Seriously, what does it take to fire Hust? he has been the worst head of First Party studios ever, and even after the Concord flop, he didn't resign. Are Sony directors blind? After guys like Yoshida and Shawn Layden, we are stuck with Hulst and his horrible track record.

Have you ever heard the maxim: "They know the price of everything and the value of nothing!"?

Demon's Souls remake and Returnal for the size of the install base are both medium sales, but the fact PlayStation won this generation without even delivering PS5 exclusive games from their most expensive to run AAA studios. And Demon's Souls even got a Pro patch and is the best looking game around, and a show case for the pro and PSSR, so Bluepoint aren't a carried loss, it is just accounting that can't attribute the value they bring to PlayStation directly through game sales - of which Demon's Souls is still a remake of niche genre game.

There's really nothing left of the Sony I used to love. Demon's Souls was amazing. Bluepoint's remasters were amazing, too. And remember Japan Studio? Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Puppeteer, Gravity Rush.. all these amazing smaller games that were key to PlayStation's success. Everything's gone man. Enjoy your Concords, Marathons and Horizon Hunter Gatherers (rofl). Sony is dead. Fuck 'em.

I'm getting to the point where I'm 99% sure nothing has happened with Bloodborne is because of From Software, not Sony

Sony would love the free money from a Bloodborne remaster

The other franchises (Spyro, Sly Cooper, etc.) have been abandoned because Sony has largely ceded the "family friendly" gaming category entirely to Nintendo. After Astro Bot won a billion awards but didn't sell that many copies I don't blame them

They might have gotten some mileage out of a remaster of a SOCOM game now that Call of Duty has shit the bed but even in its heyday SOCOM was super duper niche and hardly anyone played it

I was talking about infamous, Resistance and Killzone (Hermen does hate his own franchise tho)

Imagine launching the Demon's Souls remake, only to be stuck in GAAS hell on company orders, only for it to be cancelled because one of their other GAAS failures did half a billion dollars in damage, only to finally lose your job because the company decided that, no, it actually wants to roll the dice on yet another GAAS. Times must be tough for the blue team. Time for another The Last of Us Remaster, followed by another Horizon Remaster. That'll right the ship.

"Most successful PlayStation generation in history."

What's to stop them from just doing what they did before the purchase?

Someone would have to get funding to create a new studio and then convince all the employees to come back. And then, they would no longer be Bluepoint. Zero name recognition. It's basically starting over.

Man sony doing everything they can to let ms back into the game. They could've just used them to remake their classic shit smh.....

My money is on Bluepoint not wanting to do more remakes. What happened to them hinting on twitter about another remake? They bit more than they could chew. You don't see Nixxes doing GaaS.

I hate current Sony, The management seem so incompetent uninspiring and have no direction or clue what PlayStation gamers want.

A total 180 to the PS4 team of management who had a clear message and direction, Hulst and the current crop really are insufferable who can not get their studios in order.

They are literally remaking 3 god of war games announced just last week. Bp remade sotc that came out the same year as gow1. They then remade Demon souls that came out the same year as that year's goty uncharted 2.

What an insane thing to say.

Sucker Punch has stated they do a few entries of something and move on. Infamous has played its part and it's done. I don't see where the big audience would be for remasters of Infamous games, they are available on PS4 anyways and already look as good as they likely ever will

Resistance and Killzone were both mediocre franchises back when Sony was looking to make competitors to Halo and Gears of War. Neither of them are missed and hardly anyone would play remasters of those

The era of enshittification in full display.
The Japanese should take full control of Playstation. Americans and Europeans are retarded.
Short-sighted "efficient" managers act only in short-term interests. They have no long-term vision, no backbone, and they do not care about legacy.

Killzone, infamous, resistance, gravity rush, Legend of fucking Dragoon etc etc etc

They have plenty of franchises to revisit. The upper management just can't get their heads out of their GAASS.

The most incompetent ps leadership ever after the ps4 dreamteam. I think I said this first in 2021 maybe and had laughing emoji reactions for it. I guess most of those would not laugh now if they are honest.

What remake or remaster was BP working on in any way post acquisition?

Seems more like they bought them and wanted them to produce new games, not remakes or remasters.
