Marathon Server Slam CCU Watch

what's the gaf consensus?

Any good? My interest at initial reveal was high, then plummeted after the full reveal, but mildly curious after the more recent trailers where it looked far better.
It's the sort of game where if you put the time in to understand wtf is going on, have two friends who can regularly play with you, and willing to chat to randoms, then yea probably great.

If you can't manage or be bothered with one of those aspects, it's an uphill struggle and one I can't recommend.

The whole intro video was cool and I just kept thinking how cool a single player game would have been with the setting, story, aesthetics etc

This isn't correct. The falloff is huge, sure, but at 19:00 UTC was the overall peak. At 19:00 UTC the following day it was 69,355. Not 43k. That low was at 10:00 UTC. I'm all for shitting on the game, but that person is straight up lying.

2 camps: either embarrassing trash that will be the next Highguard/Concord

OR

Actually pretty fun, and gets better and better as you keep playing

My bet is most of the former camp got ranked trying to extract and ragequit

He'll be back later explaining why single-player is dead and no one buys single-player games anymore, and Marathon is the next big thing as Highguard was

40-80K for a BUNGIE multiplayer game on a FREE trial… Sony should consider to keep the full game free because this is a really really bad sign.

I don´t see much reason to play the Serverslam more than a few hours, since everything you earn gets wiped and the full version is coming next week. So this may be a reason for the somewhat low numbers.

I played till rank 10 and I am good for now. Will play more next week when the full version arrives.

Is this a Highguard thread?...because the exact same shit was being said in those. It's always you didn't play it enough for it to grow on you, or you suck...lol.

First 5 - 10 hours will shed a lot of players. After that, GOTY.
What do u think should be considered good 24h peak ccu for marathon after a month, 30k? More? Less?
Coz since its gaas it doesnt matter that much how many players it attracts but rather how many players it can retain longterm.

Its like with a woman, if she is decently attractive or even avg looking she can easily get sex from 80 maybe even 90% of men(yes, including married ones if they wouldnt suffer any fallback aka angry wifey divorce and take his kids and more than half his assets on top of putting him on childsupport and allymoney :P ), but success for a woman is if she gets a ring/house/name from desirable guy.

which is weird because Destiny is so good at that
It's like jumping in on Season 17 of Destiny 3 or some shit. Anyone who isn't that interested in it will drop it after a couple of hours.

You'd have thought they would have figured this out by now, especially with a clean slate.

POE2 is a pretty complex game but it does a pretty good job at teaching you the basics in the first few hours.

This basically shows you fuck all. That said Im having a great time with it, bit you have to put in the effort. Most won't.

I tried this game, but I didn't have the patience to put that much time in it

If they want this to succeed, they should really address that given this is a live service game.
I put my last remaining testicle on the betMGM app that Marathon will succeed. I doubted for 24 hours, but I have seen the light. I literally find myself shedding tears of joy going looking though all the upgrade trees. We are welcoming a retention God.

North of 30k on Steam. On-boarding is a lot worse than I imagined but again...this game will retain. I think this will hit its floor relatively quickly.

You can't really judge anything off a free test. Either people just tried it because it was free and didn't like it or people tried it and liked up and decided to wait for the real release.

I'm surprised they didn't release the third map in this test because it's the most interesting one. Lots of moving from in and outside and it has weather storms that can hurt you.

Looking forward to check how it will go :)

It wasn't for me, I could barely understand what was going on and those cutscenes with some random text and voice lines didn't help

Can't say they aren't trying, they are paying almost every streamer on the planet to play it today. Every single streamer on Twitch has #ad or #MarathonPartner on their screen or in their description.
That marketing budget is big coz game already costed sony few hundo milion of bucks, additional 5-10m usd wont matter anyways :P

It's getting the standard hate.

That said, it's not for me and, if I'm honest, it's disappointing. I was hoping that Bungie would be designing a more approachable game. In fact, the opposite - it's a niche, sweaty extraction shooter.

I also hate the aesthetic.

Fans of the genre should like it.

If you want more accessible did you try Arc Raiders? It's very accessible to the point I just found it boring. The AI is basically no threat in that game.

I did, and came to the same conclusion as you.

I just don't think the genre is for me. The magic is in having a group of friends that you can play with. This both heightens the tension of pvp and alleviates the boredom of scavenging the map.

It's a genre that has a high barrier of entry.

I was hoping that Marathon would offer a much more pve focused experience, with pvp an addition rather than the core.

Alas no.

Many will love it. I'm just surprised Bungie have targeted such a niche type of game.

Welp. I know how that feels lol.
They have changed a fair bit based on feedback but it was one if my main points. I did a fairly lengthy post to them on what I thought was wrong. The onboarding was bad in the tests I'd argue its worse now.

I think an optional solo mode that teaches you all the systems and how the game works with maybe bots as runners would have worked wonders.

Im about 70 hours deep across various tests and even I felt a bit lost on Thursday for a while. Not a great first impression and i fully understand why a lot will just dismiss it.

I'm at a loss why the UI is an issue, especially for those who played Destiny this isn't nearly as bad as the shit show that was/is. It is hilariously straight forward comparatively. But if you can't figure it out then yeah the game obviously isn't for you.
It really is simple to understand. The ONLY issue I have is there aren't enough little icons for the different item types and what they do.

Even then you get used to the items and start recognizing these fairly quickly.

I think they will be fine. Seems like its landing exactly where we expected. Not massive, not a disaster.

But does Sony regard that as a worthy result for their expensive investment? I feel like they set their expectations so high, that even an average performing game will seem like failure to them, and to us from a public relations viewpoint.

No idea, I got what I wanted. Hopefully it does well enough to stick around.

As a SP/PvE only player, I thought I was going to hate it but I'm liking it a lot.

To play solo is probably too difficult until you learn it and unlock better stuff, feels too hard. It's like a souls or horror game.

The game gets way better, more fun and easier with a decent crew (even with randoms not using voice chat), your survival rate increases a lot. And obviously way more compared to going solo. The AI or enemy players kill you maybe too fast, at least for a non-hardcore PvP player.

I understand the game get way better and more fun playing with friends, but even playing solo is ok, to lose some of your items isn't dramatic because you quickly get similar stuff via the stuff you get unlocking by doing factions missions, which are very varied.

Art, narrative, music, gunplay, progression, artstyle, visuals feel great. I'm surprised to see that it has a great and well explained narrative and lore, it isn't ultra confusing stuff like in Destiny. They got good writers.

Weapon designs look great. Sadly the characters are ugly and androgious because of wokism, but other than this the game looks good.

There are several things that should be improved or fixed, I assume many will be fixed at launch or soon after it. Time to kill feels to me too short when I'm getting shot and too long when I'm the one shooting, both vs players and AI.

I think it would be good to have a PvE only mode with enemy runners controlled by AI and a difficulty level slider. Wouldn't need a separate story for a "SP/PvE campaign mode", the game seems to already have a good enough one.

Yes, because Sony didn't only bought them for Marathon, which I assume will do a decent job at launch (not record numbers, not a drama). They got:
  • Destiny 2
  • Destiny Rising
  • Future destiny games
  • Destiny off-gaming adaptations
  • Marathon
  • Potential future Marathon games
  • Marathon potential off-gaming adaptations
  • Upcoming Bungie new IPs
  • Potential off-gaming adaptations of these upcoming new IPs
  • Team LFG and their upcoming new IP(s)
  • Potential Team LFG IPs off-gaming adaptations
  • New IP creation, FPS, MP & GaaS expertise, knowledge and tech shared with the other SIE teams helping to the success of games like Helldivers 2, GT7, MLB and more to come, plus to help detect GaaS that won't work well enough
Haters will always hate independently of its sucess level and quality. Anti Sony childish haters because it's a Sony game, Xbox childish fanboys because they're the makers of Halo bought by Sony, Destiny childish fanboys because it's Bungie spending resources in something that isn't Destiny, Sony childish fanboys because hate to see Sony making MP/GaaS games, Sony childish PS fanboys because hate to see Sony publishing games outside PS, Nintendo childish fanboys because it's a Sony game and because it isn't on Switch 2. And maybe in case they exist, Tarkov/Arc Raiders fanboys because it's competition.

Thanks everyone.

This comment I think gives me all I need to know that it's not gonna be for me.

With the last sentence just kinda making me sad for what could have been 🤣

Hmm well this is a promising sentiment. I'm also mostly SP…I do occasionally get a few of us oldies to play some helldivers for an hour or so every so often…it having a strong narrative appeal…but in reality I'll be lucky to find the time myself or to have one or two friends on long enough to make mostly going solo viable.

Yup absolutely needs a proper tutorial mode.

Everyone in the tests said the same and we were the hardcore that was already on board.

That said I do like it how the game just doesn't give a fuck and justs chucks you in at the deep end and repeatedly kills you from the off. Not the best way to sell your game though.
