Windows 12 Reportedly Set for Release This Year as a Fully Modular, Subscription-Based, AI-Focused OS

The Debloater apps are going to be wild.

NPUs are still early-stage chips and not widely adopted across all systems. This requirement will lock out millions of PC owners from updating to Microsoft's next OS, but fortunately, Windows 11 support will last for another few years.
Good. I'll be sure to not get a NPU, whatever the fuck that means

It's almost like Microsoft is trying to get an award or get the record for the most fucking consecutive flops

I understand them going a different direction and phasing out xbox but I would only agree with this if they were firing on all cylinders regarding pc

To think that somebody wants the entire OS to be subscription-based you have to be fucking stupid

So not only are we going to avoid windows 12 like the plague, we're gonna make sure to get an extra copy of windows 11.

So we're just gonna completely skip 12 until they fucking learn their lesson....

They're making it more easier for some competitor to come along the way and provide an os that makes sense for gaming.

Right now I'm more open to that than ever if Microsoft wants to go this path because this is where we're gonna have to part ways.

I will switch to Linux wholesale and keep my PS5 for CoD and whatever doesn't work on Linux if true. Go fuck yourself MS.

This. I'll rock Windows 10 and 11 until its time to move on. The first Win 12 game that is required to have the OS to play it, I'll wrap up PC gaming on MS OS's and build a Linux system. I have no plans to upgrade my PC until we see what MS's dumbass is doing with this fucking OS.

The fucking idiots destroyed XB and now they've moved on to curb stomping Windows OS.

I'll worry about this in 2 years from now, when ESU ends for Windows 10. Hopefully all games will still support the OS before then.

After that i will most likely use a fully debloated, modded Windows 11 setup and keep that for as long as games support it.

After that, we'll see.

...allowing the addition and removal of components. This will help customise the OS for each build, whether it's a lighter-weight system, a gaming-prioritised build, etc.

Does nobody on this forum read anymore? I don't see how this is a bad thing unless it's complete bullshit.

Typical kneejerk reaction from people who still run Windows 10 because they don't know how to confirgure a PC. The OS they hated when they were on Windows 8, which is the OS they hated when they were on Windows 7, etc. Same shit with every release.

Neural Processing Unit. It's stupid because its a completely unnecessary requirement. Windows are just in cahoots with hardware manufacturers. They do this to push new hardware sales. They did it with windows 11 too and then removed some of those requirements later to boost win 11 adoption.

I see......Its wild to think you believe THAT is what we are reacting to lol

Some parts of the OS might also be locked away behind a subscription model that are expected to be "advanced AI services",

Soooooo that whole subscription thing, I think maybe, I don't know...maybe that is what folks are questioning about this whole thing. I don't think I read 1 person upset you can remove features and customize the OS

Yes, yes, MS is making this "AI OS" to be lighter on hardware and out of the goodness of their hearts.

Don't mind the metric ton of spyware on Win11, the AI bullshit like Recall, all the bugs, and AI sub in Win12. It's all going to be great. 👍

May I interest you in this amazing NYC landmark that is totally for sale?

Debloating Windows 11 only takes a few minutes. Just did it a few days ago on a fresh install.

Already have that view so I'm not interested lol

Glad this is just a rumor. AI is the future but not like this.

*Why do I always mistype "like" as "kike" and google thinks I meant to use the slur? That's AI for ya.

I'm racist but not THAT racist.

This modular feature reads like Microslop themselves allowing people to debloat the OS.

Sounds too good to be true. There will be a catch.

I've been dual-booting Mint, enough is enough. The indies I tried work, RE9 works. A lot of apps are now in the browser or browser based. Music and video software probably not great, but MacOS is good for that.

There may be, there may not be.

If it's subscription based, they'll likely charge for extra features most of us don't want anyway. Most people aren't like most of us though, they'll pay because they actually want all of that garbage or because they don't know any better.

That's just from a consumer standpoint.

They read it clearly that the AI component is not modular.

And the modular aspect sounds like an idea that came from marketing for the sub tiers.

This is making a lot of big assumptions about the people commenting :pie_open_mouth:. I do use Windows 11, and I know what I'm doing. I shouldn't have to spend more and more time and effort every time fighting Microsoft to make their OS not horrible. Windows 11 takes several hours, mostly getting rid of predatory Onedrive and getting it to stop hiding things from you, this sounds like it'll be way longer with all the Copilot crap, and more importantly why would I pay a subscription for a terrible OS? Linux isn't perfect, but it's free and getting better all the time while Windows is getting worse all the time.

and for people who aren't gamers, Apple is right there and at least they respect your privacy and don't force AI on you. I hope this goes really badly for Microsoft.

Microsoft as a company is complete bullshit. You give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

Look at their actions surrounding forced AI usage & vibe AI coding ruining their OS for starters, and you'll maybe start to see why people are upset.

TPM and secure boot etc were obviously for improving windows shitty security and probably the whole reason 11 exists - otherwise all the changes to 11 would have just been updates to 10, but they had to have a new number because of these hardware requirements. I don't think MS wanted to ever have a new OS version - 10 would have been it. I don't think they put in these security requirements to help sell hardware because obviously everyone could just stay on 10 if their hardware didn't meet requirements - which is essentially the same OS - which a lot did.

Yeah, I was fine with that forced hardware upgrade, because there was a good pro-consumer reason.

They would have stayed on old hardware but a lot of businesses upgraded due to their hardware not supporting Windows 11:

It saw a near 10% spike due to that requirement.

Knew it. I smelled the NPU requirement a mile away. Poor souls who just bought a system without an NPU, their Hardware will become obsolete so soon.

I will flip to linux mint in a heartbeat. Microslop has become very anti consumer friendly.

We got to a point where even Mac is more value than a fucking Windows machine. I have a Mac and I'm finally glad I do. What if it goes to shit? I'll just use Linux on my shitty work laptop that I was given for free and I'll fully own in 2 years.

Shame they still lack a lot of the games Windows gets otherwise they'd be much more popular.

Hahahaha, yes! Just fucking do it M$, it will be glorious to see them willingly and freely cut their own guts open - Seppuku style.

Hollywood might be dead, but luckily big corpo makes up for it with entertaining, satirical and dystopian buffoonery.
We have a European government switching to Linux.

There's a Granny on YouTube making videos about it

I'm just saying, I've hated Linux for 20 years and I'm beyond shocked at how user friendly its become for day to day task but keeping the door open for advanced tweaking.

Dead on arrival. No one wants this garbage.

WTF are MS smoking?
It worked for office 365, the subscription part at least. People had no choice really and just roll with it. They are probably hoping for the same with Windows. Let's be honest outside of this gaming form, hardly anyone is going to swith to Linux or convert en mass to MacOS. I hate it from top to bottom, but they are greedy.

Misleading thread title there trying to paint an equivalence between the copilot subscription and the os itself.

That being said, if they're baking it into the kernel then they can fuck right off.

The modern user is a person who has spent his life demanding freedom, only to spend his income on a subscription that ensures he is never left alone with his own thoughts.

To surrender your privacy to an AI is a charming eccentricity; to pay a monthly fee for the privilege is simply bad manners

MS will be going with the subscription route for Windows eventually with the whole industry hunting service revenue. I'll be interested in how they do it though as forcing it suddenly will mean a lot move to other OS's I think.

Can't avoid Windows for work, but at home I am already on Arch KDE since a few months (and Lubuntu on the laptop for years). Works fine with some different problems but generally, especially Gnome stuff, usual apps should be idiot proof.

I use macOS for daily computing tasks already, only reason I ever use Windows is on my Gaming Desktop for compatibility, hope linux get's a push from this so I can finally change there as well..
