Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

There's no higher level game design discussion going on here. It would be great to see other people diving into Marathons game mechanics with insightful critiques. That's not happening.

It's just "Bungie woke", "Look at CCU now" and "saturated market" ad nauseum.

It's truly macabre.

As opposed to the months of propaganda you post about every single live service slop game that gets announced? According to you, every single live service game is destined for greatness and then your entire worldview gets ruined when they underperform or outright flop. Shit man, you've caught temp bans for your shilling in the past.

Let's all be brutally honest: The only people who truly know the benchmark for success for Marathon is Bungie and Sony. Not anyone here. However, given the cost of purchasing Bungie, the persistent issues Bungie has had with Destiny and the pains that's caused Sony, and the (likely high) cost of development of this game alone, I can't imagine Sony will be pleased with these results. Even if we generously assume the console player numbers are equal to the PC player numbers, that's still pretty awful for a game of this magnitude made by a prominent studio, and backed by Sony's deep pockets.

Unique does not necessarily mean good. An art style can be uniquely bad.
But bad is subjective.

I love the art style. As a graphic designer this game is a wet dream.

To each their own. I completely understand why people don't like it but I do. Some people don't seem to understand that though and that goes for the game in general.

To be fair...... They didn't purchase them for $3.5 Billion for one game. Let's be somewhat fair here.

I get that, but Destiny 2 is a dead game relative to when they purchased it. Content was delayed for Marathon to make it die further. Then Marathon released to numbers that you'd be happy if you were a AA or indie studio with a much smaller budget. To this point, the Bungie purchase has been a terrible acquisition.

Now before anyone points at lower than launch day numbers...

Today is a day of worship for many normal, good players. They are at church or with their community.

Not like those godless heathens who play Slay the Spire 2. Fucking demonic assholes.

I don't feel that the topic of conversation is really about the game design, it's about the business, and there have been plenty of posts about that as well as the jokes. Welcome to the internet.

I, for one, and there are plenty of others posting here, are interesting in the analysis of why Bungie made this game, what kind of audience size they expected to get, why such a large development budget, and what will the ultimate cost be?

There's a greater analysis happening to try and understand why the industry became so fixated on this boom or bust assault of highly expensive projects. There's a legacy of them now and the damage they've caused is horrific: Anthem, Avengers, Hyenas, Concord, etc...

Marathon seems like a pretty solid game, but one that seems positioned in completely the wrong for the studio as it doesn't seem to be a small cost side project to test out new waters. It's big, it's expensive, and seems so evidently clear based on the wider gamer view that it is not for the masses. Yet the supposed budget looks like Bungie expected it to be. Why? It's an important question to ask.

what's the difference between This Thread and review bombing?
I am not sure. In general, I think people shouldn't review things they haven't played. But I think discussions about why the game isn't appealing is something else. Maybe the difference just comes down to the score + it being a review. Also review bombing is often political and not related to the actual product; see for example Breaking Bad fans review bombing the new game of thrones show. So it's all very childish to boot.

Maybe we just need a new word for a Concord level catastrophe. Feels wrong to put this on the same level. Marathon has more than 100x as many players and they probably had similar budgets.
Remember how much cash sony spent on aquiring bungie, those peanuts they got in return for destiny2 probably werent enough to sustain bungie last few years so to break even, sony forked 3,7b usd for that, add on top another 400-500m usd on marathon(both production and marketing budget total).
Bungie really has to bring in 3-4 massive hits and even then sony will lose money on the transaction anyways :P

Coincidentally nov 2022 was first time destiny 2 had lowest 24h peak ccu of under 61k, before it really made tons of cash, after that it gone worse and worse to current 11k 24h ccu now :P

Didn't Resident Evil Requiem, a traditional single player experience, just take a hot dookie all over Marathon?

*edit* Yep, it sure did.

Right, but none of you are playing that right now because it was a $70 dollar, 12 hour game with little replay value.

There is nothing left to squeeze there so fans of that type of game go online and find engagment by complaining about Live Service games. I've played around 30 hours of Marathon for $40 dollars, and will likely play it non stop until the start of season 2. Likely much longer.

That's why I view certain types as "resentment gamers". They're constantly dumped on the ground by an abusive model.

Now I would love to keep interacting with y'all here. My PvP nature loves this adversarial discussion, but I'm probably close to being banned. Se la vie!

U looking it from the wrong perspective of having almost no money and tons of or close to infinite time, for adults aka ppl with disposable income our time is most precious resource, we want quality time, even if its those 12-15h instead of mid or bad time of 100h, if its bad time we dont even wanna waste 30min on it no matter if its free, 40 or 100$.
70$ for 12-15h of superhigh quality time is very good value, much better from wasting 40$ on 30min to 100h of mid/bad time, our time is real value we pay here, not those measly 40 or 70$.

Such a shame what's happened to this game. People I know that like these games say it's genuinely good.

I think it's just the aesthetic. I'm not a fan.

Instead of getting fired Hermen got promoted because he has been very successful managing their first party studios.

Jim Ryan retired leaving almost all the company metrics in all time records and in a multiyear growth pattern, he obviously wasn't fired because there wasn't absolutely no reason to do so. Plus he announced it like almost a year before and even made him goodbye parties in many places, where attended even people who were in his position before him, his former bosses.

So many people focused on negativity and nothing else. Meanwhile I'm enjoying the game. I can see why devs hate gamers.
Devs don't hate gamers, devs hate toxic, childish and annoying fanboys and trolls.

Particularly the noisy ones who keep barking lies and wrong assumptions, or have an opinion that only represents a tiny portion of the fanbase and tell the devs they should do what they do and not what the big majority wants and actually pays the bills and allow their investors recoup their money and allow them to continue making games.

huh, so devs of single player games can create a title with 12 hours worth of content while receiving $70 per copy sold, whereas devs of GAAS must create games with 100s hours worth of content for $40 (and still selling less).

I wonder which is the better business proposition 🤔

Yup.

It's not that all of us are bashing without reason on all the GaaS, it's that we are mourning the games we never got. This has been a weak generation because of it.

but if re9 was 100 hours people wouldn't love it as much cuz it would be bloated

two things
1 fans hate that games as a service is taking over the single player sector
2 Blue Point died for this kind of slop
Yah there would be far less hostility if GAAS lived in harmony alongside single player, but we have seen over and over and over again, legendary single player studios side tracked into dumpster fires of failure (and often then their entire closure) into GAAS. Meaning not only did we lose countless great single player games from these companies, but we also lost in many cases any hope of good games from them in the future as the studios are literally dead. Almost all of Sony's first party studios have suffered and had really crap output the entire gen due to this. This is all not to mention the overall damage it does to players and the industry in terms of addiction and player/buyer behaviour. Most gamers simply get hooked into one or two Gaas and thus never become repeat buyers of single player games, wrecking the model for everyone.

These things with few exceptions are a cancer, and even after the endless graveyard of games and companies it's still eating companies alive. This is why people who don't want this stuff are enjoying watching it all burn to the ground. We want it to happen, want them to fail, and hope that from the ashes, indies making great games will be born (as many have in recent years).

When developers who once made great video games that were about FUN turn around and sell out to social propaganda and corpo money, yeah, the paying customer has a right to talk shit. I can see why gamers hate devs. You're feeding the garbage machine by accepting shitty games made by greedy devs at the prompting of greedier corpos. "I am enjoying the game!" is the short-sighted lizard brain attitude that got us here in the first place. Bungie put out the laziest basic level of slop and figured that you and everyone else would just glom all over it. They're shitting on you as a customer and you're happy to open your mouth and chew. It says just as much about you and gamers like you as it does the greedy corpos, really.

As an example, people above him see as positive to optimize their costs by shutting down a support studio in the very expensive Texas when their same job can be done in a much cheaper in some internal or external asian or european support studio.

Specially now, in moments where profitability is particularly important. Now after huge inflation, component shortages, covid lockdowns, Trump tariffs, the next step, and maybe worse: the war to attack and try to destroy Iran will cause oil prices skyrocket and maybe even oil shortages, which as of waterfall effect will cause prices of everything (including big price increases of console component components and console, accesories & physical game shipments) to also skyrocket. Plus additional side effects that may crush the global economy (at least the western one).

Which pretty likely will require to increase prices of console, PSN and so on, and maybe to make more cuts with additional layoffs, cancellations and studios closures.
