Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

I don't claim to know how many players it needs to be a viable long-term investment but at what point does Sony start ringing the alarm bells with Marathon?
Now.

Years back they were already gassing people when Marathon was in development and D2 had about 100k+ people playing it. During those content updates, it'd bump to 200-300k CCU. Hard to decipher exactly the trend as Steamdb charts for old years are clumped into large time periods.

Now D2 trends to 5-10k daily and Marathon started at 88k and trending down fast.

The next D2 DLC is June. Going by recent DLCs, it bumps the user base to 50-100k depending which one it was, but then drops fast again. Bungie's past layoffs (two of them) were even after getting those huge spikes above. So even that didnt save them from cuts.

While I agree with the Destiny 2 criticisms, I'd still play that anyday over Marathon, at least D2 has actual PvE modes and let's me keep the gear I spend my limited amount of gaming time acquiring, and doesn't just take it away at the end of a season, assuming other players haven't done that already.

You are right, they are taking away content and missions instead of your gear

Some games click with gamers. Dead by Daylight has slowly crept UP over the years.

Rust is even bigger. Never followed Rust at all except way back watching some funny video about trap houses. But turns out it has tons of new content.

Looks like everyone's weight tracking during covid

Big fan of metaphor.

Looks like competitive fps guys are digging marathon

Most of the ones I have bumped into don't seem to be liking it at all, but sure it'll have its fans.

The more I've watched of this game I just couldn't do it, there's Def games I dismissed and eventually came to love but man I can't find anything that makes me want to give it a 2nd try.

Endgame? You play games to have fun, not to fill some sort of bar

The game has been out for a week lol

Yea I've platinumed about 30 games recently, I always have fun.

You don't understand what an endgame is and why it's important in these types of games? Getting weapons just to get weapons, rinse and repeat, isn't really an endgame.

I wouldn't say "profitable", I'd say worth the price. And there's no way for Sony to truly know if that $3.6 Billion was "worth the price" until 2030 or so. Keep in mind...........Sony has already written off like $250M from the Bungie purchase, so.....

Technically, the purchase was only "worth" $3.35 Billion. So they are in the hole right now.
You're always "in the hole" with big purchases. That's what long term investments are.

Ok, but for D2 is the other way around, they made it a job basically and people got sick of it, so it was time to move on to the next chapter to reinvigorate the franchise, yet they keep going with expansions

I said I have plenty of fun, it's litrelly just me adding to a conversation you fuck

Ok sure, you've posted in this thread like 50 times but have no idea what the game is about? What are you adding to the conversation about the CCU about a game that you know nothing of, what's your endgame just banging on the I don't like GAASwagon here?

It truly has been a sorry discourse.

Bulkhead said that Wardogs needs between 3k and 10k CCU to be profitable. They're a 100 person studio based in the UK. Marathon showing killer retention at 55k is supposed to be a flop?

You got me I am. 😂 I'm butt hurt by a 40 some year old posting wrestling memes and hulk hogan tag. My day is ruined, thanks.

Apparently so, you're the one that came at me like like a Karen over mentioning platinums. What color panties you have on today?

58k CCU, imagine being part of that

Is this a joke? Killer retention? It's been out 1 week. It's averaging 50,000 currently and it's dropping every day, are you ok?

"like like a Karen over mentioning platinums" yeah I did. Furthermore it had nothing to do with the discussion of what the endgame Marathon is that you were grilling another member about. As I said before I didn't bring up platinums, you did for some unknown reason and I was asking what the hell you were talking about since it had to do with nothing regarding the topic. So let's stick to the topic shall we?

What's the end game?
Comes out this week.

I think a lot of you have a pretty fucked up perspective.

at 58k CCU on Steam, this is the 16th most played game on Steam right now. In the world. Tell me again how that's a bad thing?

Also, tell me which one of the 15 games above it you're putting dozens of hours into right now.

I think more so a discovery period. The game is filtering casuals and
This already happened with the Open Beta.
Marathon is shaking everything up and the child's first reaction to a new taste is to reject it. But taste can be acquired.
The CCU dosent reflect that. (The opposite happened with Arc) The CCU was higher after the game launched.

What we see is, yes, an acquired taste; a product of something new + the honeymoon period. Once all these people start running the same loop after that phase, the game's flaws will start to exacerbate. Right now, there is still some anticipation and excitement to unlock/solve the puzzle for the "endgame map"

4-7 weeks, to see the "real" discourse for this game.

I'm just fucking around mane, it's all good.. I did actually plug some good hours into marvel rivals and forgive me for saying I platinumed It, but I hated overwatch and couldn't get into it but marvel rivals was awesome couldn't put it down.

I'll be busting into Requeim soon as well.

Sony spend $3,6B on Bungie to create a game that is losing for a indie game by x4 times the playbase. Tell me again how that's a good thing?

Valid take.

My speculation is once the core audience is established, if they can stick the landing, they will generate a significant buzz with word of mouth that could trigger more people jump in.

Nobody claimed Marathon's #16 is the worst thing ever. The point is it's underwhelming for a hyped $40 AAA extraction shooter from Bungie

Imagine asking when Vault of Glass came out "The end game is 1 raid?"

I agree that we'll get the first hints of its stating power in a couple of months. So we can put off calling it dead for another 6 -10 weeks? lol?

You think Sony expected Marathon alone to make up the acquisition cost in a year?

Well, that's the challenge. So far, player retention is very good. The difficulty and this "hardcore PvP" buzz around it will work against that (acquiring more players).

I think what is meant by end game and at least for me is like Destiny we knew the end game was getting better gear for raids and for pvp. There was always a more grand purpose to the end game or acquiring gear and making better builds, same with Diablo for example you grind for higher and better gear, higher nightmare modes etc or to land the perfect build etc..

Marathon from what I see it seems like extraction in itself, is the end game... Get some better guns to kill maybe quicker or more efficiently perhaps. But to me I would still think that in itself would flat line but thats just me
