Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

StS2 doing these numbers is bonkers and heartening to me. Original is probably my favorite game, certainly my most played game as an adult.

Sequel is excellent and I anticipate will only get better. Devs are committed to making modding even easier. Chef's kiss

Devs deserve all the success they have been experiencing. The first one was very influential in the industry and plays amazing.

STS2 is on my list to pick up in the near future.

The thread on here makes it seem like no reason to play the first anymore? Thats what someone posted.

I have it on my wishlist on PSN if it goes on sale though

Yea that's possible also, if I didn't have so much to play I'd snag it on pc and go but just so much to play I'm already going nuts haha

It is just relentless.

I'm getting 2k fewer at 18:00 UTC than yesterday?
Yes. But the way the site updates, the 18:00 hour running right now (2 pm EST) is still going. A bunch of us discussed this pages back and it seems what happens is the current hour in progress has a changing number going up or down. Since the game is trending up in this hour, the final locked in number will be taken at the end of the hour.

When the hour is complete, it uses the hour's PEAK CCU that hour to lock in hourly number. IMO that doesnt make sense to always take the high, but Calico and Bywatterson said they probably do that for methodology simplicity which makes sense.

So to compare 18:00 UTC you got to wait till the hour is complete. Give it a bit of extra time too to ensure it does a final locked in number. That's why I used complete hour 16:00 UTC (Noon EST) because the 17:00 hour (1 pm EST) was still in progress.

It's a dumb thing to use the hourly high as the locked in number but thats what they seem to do. It's stupid because it overinflates the number. Even systematically you can see how stupid that is. For example, a game whose CCU is rising all hour would take the high point number at the end of the hour as it transitions to the next hour. But a game whose CCU is trending down that hour, it would take the first minute CCU highs and use that as the locked number when the hour is complete.

It would be like baseball players monthly split stats. A batter plays 20 games during the month playing 3-5 at bats per game. His overall batting avg that month is .280. But using the Steamdb methodology, instead of averaging it all out or using a more fair calculation the player's monthly batting avg would take the highest game he had. So if one game he went 4 for 5 batting .800, it woud show his monthly batting avg as .800 that month. lol

Looking at complete 17:00 UTC (1 pm), it's 38.7k vs 37.5k yesterday. So about +3% now.

Let's assume for a second that the entirety of the CCU-army and the chuds/tourists/nazis/maidenless are just living in an internet bubble and in reality this game is succeeding beyond what anyone hoped for (including Sony/Bungie) - then where are the self-congratulating tweets that corporations usually drop by now, where are the stats, shouldn't at least something have come out of them (AFAIK and maybe I missed it, there has already been posted)

The weekend will be interesting, I do think not getting back to 88k is the tell all for this. That number I still say is lower than I expected
They have a tournament event on twitch this weekend with peanut and shroud in it.

Could add some extra eyes to do fomo buy in maybe. 🤔 Could get it to that 70k range?

Second half of March is what I'm curious on. Is ranked and a raid boss map going to add more players or change minds?

Peanut is the most entertaining streamer I've ever watched. Not even he can make this game enjoyable to watch (nothing against how it plays, I just find it incredibly dull to watch).

It could, I'll be curious to see. I think what is just an overall bad sign is no word of mouth growth, I just feel if the game had spikes of growth it would bode better.

I genuinely find it fascinating just given it's bungie and the extraction genre having its arc raiders moment.
I also wonder if it's just a case of not enough extraction fans to go around, if arc wasn't a thing I'd be curious how it would've done.

I will say Arc is far removed from true extraction. It uses the building blocks to make a social sim game that leads to people doing tik tok posts to meme on each other.

Tarkov hunt and marathon are the real deal, and Tarkov is still king.

Maybe that's partly it also, if tarkov is the main extraction game where the majority of hardcore extraction players are they may not have room or time or a place for Marathon. If arc is more overall accessible it fits that more welcoming mold, and marathon is in the hardcore lane where it just doesn't have enough extraction players to go around given it isn't what I personally consider a popular genre, and it's not gonna welcome the casuals.

As a gaming fan that loves to play, to game watch, to see choices made like I said I'm just fascinated to see how it pans out here.

This games likely sold a million copies by now but Bungie hasn't said anything. I suppose they don't consider that number big enough?

Honestly, they'll just get dunked on. I hope they keep it heads down and keep improving the game over this season. If they succeed, there'll be time to celebrate later. Right now, just keep this thing alive.

Would be a shame if this game dies. It's a lot of fun.

I think what truly hurts Marathon's potential is the look. Even if someone wants to try an extraction shooter which has more hardcore game mechanics like every gamer is a last ditch survivalist, ARC, and old games like Tarkov and Hunt have the look. That gritty scrounging look.

Marathon is trying for a similar game mechanic, but looks bright and sci fi like Mirrors Edge. Nobody says every extraction shooter has to look darker and more realistic, just as nobody says every WWI and WWII game has to be realistic looking with blood. But it kind of goes hand and hand. I think it helps when a game and appropriate setting go together.

Looking at this title I genuinely believe if they had done this we would be all happy campers:
-Listened alpha feedback for UI and battle pass skins
-Released with a campaign that can be played pve SP or co op, or a competitive variant campaign that is solo or trio with PvP in it too. PvP variant grants better cosmetics if you opt into it.
-Added a firefight mode that is pve trios with a free purple kit. Beat the waves and you keep it.
-Had duos at launch

Now you've got a game that has Bungies key strengths and can transition people into a hardcore game for PvP or just come back for the yearly story expansions and additions to the firefight/horde mode.

Thats a Xbox 360 era game package we never get anymore and would've blown people away.

I agree totally man, I do think the style has hurt it so bad as well.... It's rough to look at just way to artsy fartsy as I've said before. It just doesn't bleed any cool factors least to me

Some of that would've helped for sure. That ui man wow I was just hating it so bad and I game on an 83" C1 and the ui just was like a screen of crap I struggled with it.

Like I look at that tarkov and I have no vendetta against it at all so for me it's just I think alot of my bitterness is truly the way destiny was handled. I loved their pvp so much in crucible and in the game id log in and do pvp quests for friends etc.. I loved it so it's hard for me to be happy for Bungie or cheer for the game that to me is forever the one that basically ended the crucible support.

I'm just curious where are you getting a million copies from, genuinely asking.
SteamDB has 3 ownership estimates between 675k and 890k. The game probably sold at least 400k between Xbox and PS.

I honestly think the look thing is overblown. Aside from some colourful building exteriors, the game looks like any other game. But so I'm not coming at this 'combatively', can you share a few screenshots of what you don't like about the look of the game?

I think what they were trying to do is go balls out looking unique (which it does) with bright zoomer graphics where some of the characters have that attitude emo look. So based on characters, the game could catch on with the young crowd on tik tok with meme-ish uploads showing crazy looking characters with cosmetic skins on steroids. Compared to other shooters, you can tell what what they are trying to do as the game is heavily promoted with stylish pics. You dont even see them really promote the actual gameplay loop or teasing people with all the stuff you can find and rummage through in your inventory.

Does any of that ever show or account for steam refunds? I just think that's wild that many copies sold and such low numbers, just seems way to low of a CCU for that many copies

And I posted above the one screen of a character or whoever it is, I'll post it again...

That just doesn't call me. And the bright color big blocky bland maps don't either and I think it's a problem and I'm not just saying it to shit on it just my true opinion is I don't think the art style has done itself any favors.

Highguard actually art style wise looked better to me

Personally, what's keeping me from playing this, is that it's too focused on teams. I want a good single player experience. Tarkov is good for single player, Arc is OK for single player.

They have to lose a bunch of players because of this.

Here's another good single player extraction shooter that is still in EA. 1.0 should be later this year.

I haven't played the one below but had good WOM in the indie scene

And then ofcourse there is what many people consider to be the parody that plays really, really well for being a subversive take on the genre. Has 80k reviews at Very Positive.

I thought the same at first, but solo queue is solos only.

Playing mostly solo and having a ton of fun.

What you said above makes sense and yea just seeing those characters man, it's just typical for modern day I guess... I'm Def not their target audience with that. I find it all just so bad, I'm tryin to think of something I dislike even more... Well... I will say concord characters were absolutely the worst in gaming history so I'd take this over concord but only as a default choice.

77k All time peak. Their data isn't right.

JvVf4zRDYYldUJF0.png
I noticed that too. I checked BF6 too (I didnt bother the other games). His stats must be taking a different day for each all time peak. He might be also using all data points he gets for 15:00 and picks the one with the highest CCU as his methodolody of peak. Not sure.

But a cool thing is below each game he has a 7 day (15:00 hour) comparison tracker. Though he's missing March 10 and his variance number in green or red is totally wrong.

I think this 15:00 is a literal snapshot and not steamdb taking the highest number. Eyeballing the numbers it looks like 15:00 which is 3 pm EST, since 15:00 UTC (11 am EST) looks way off.

Well, give it time. The site still working out the stats calculations.

After this it would not surprise me if they took away the CCU numbers, lol.

I hope they don't but we acted up boi, and I shit you not, we acted up and it is causing a lot of anger from all kinds of people. They hate us knowing the ccu numbers and having this info. They hate it. I would hate it, lol.

It's like punching right in front of someone's face and then stopping your fist and being like "see I didn't hit you you can't do anything" and then doing that for a couple of months non-stop, lol.

They will be mad enough to rise up after this....because I'm gonna be honest a game like this lives by the goodwill of the community and I'm not sure how much more it can take. So many big money people will be trying to yank ccu after this. I'm not being a doomer and not asking you to stop, just stating this thing. It's already done anyway however this plays out it is out of control now.

They didn't mandate or tell reviewers anything. They simply put out a statement asking reviewers to wait until they get the full picture. The community simply isn't geared enough for the raid that is coming later this month lol.

If they had released Cryo Archive (the hardcore raid map in question) from the start reviewers would have moaned about the difficulty and how "2 out of the 4 maps are far too difficult and unfun blabla".
If you think Bungie "asking" reviews not to review their unfinished game wasn't a way to basically mandate it I've got a bridge to sell you. I'm quite sure that reviewers who ignore Bungie's "request" will be treated differently in the future.

Lono has a nice explaination as to why they need to just get over it, the first 15 mins or so he talks about it but I think his points are valid. But yea it'd be a shame if they got rid of them because that's a true bitch move

Yeah man, I really don't want to lose them tbh. However, I do not believe that I have the right to tell anyone how to use them either. Like if people wanna look at them I don't think there should be a limit. I just worry now that this is probably affecting money at Sony that they will raise a shit fit.
Thats entirely dependent on Valve, they historically dont give much of a fuck unless law enforcement is involved.
I'll choose to believe!
Believe Jason Sudeikis GIF by Apple TV

I have faith in Gaben though the debanking scheme from that activist group last year did worry me.

I agree. But I think the good games prove it's fine overall, it all goes back to when numbers are good they love them and when bad they can't stand when people point them out...i think by now if they never really put into place a way to stop review bombing etc they won't do much here but never know.

I mean Sony doesn't show them so it's mainly just steam and I don't think they'll get rid of them but never know

I meant in game. As you're playing. This is an FPS, the only time you see your character is when you're choosing a shell. You're at that screen for a second. You can barely see the details on other player characters unless you're doing a melee finish.

I like the look of Marathon, but it's very close to generic scifi with pastel colours thrown in here and there.

If you go click on gamalytic, or playtrack in SteamDB, it'll show you what their estimates are and their methodology for calculating those estimates. I have no idea if they take refunds into account, but if you look at something like Arc, their all time peak is 480k and the estimated sales is ~9mil. I doubt 8.5mil players refunded Arc.

A million copies would indicate the game did not meet sales expectations.
It's only been out for 8 days.

Dont have a beef with the look, though for a game thats supposedly trying to sell cosmetics it is certainly a bold choice
