Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

The fun part is knowing that no matter what the Marathon defence force says or feels, Sony already knows this was a huge flop. Please continue though, for I am entertained.

Happy Eddie Murphy GIF

Just wait until lent is over. A lot of people gave up Marathon for lent, but once that's over the playerbase will see all time highs.

Personal anecdote: My cousin is holding off cause he gave up, and I quote here, "sweaty overpriced hobbies". I thought he meant prostitutes but no... he meant Marathon.

I still find it weird he refers to it as sweaty but whatever.

Anyways, no meat on Fridays and no Marathon so that CCU will go up by atleast 1 after Easter.

You quoted a post to insult me where I only shared some little objective data we have to make an analysis and a rough estimate, I assume because you don't like the data I shared and because you can't stand to see people not attacking a game you apparently hate or something.

I give you a genuine advice KyoZzz: shut the fuck up and go fuck yourself, you pathetic troll.

Oh, baby is mad.

I was genuinely telling you to wait and see for the numbers to prove you right or wrong but ok.

I'm tired of the defense force playing the victim, you're losing your shit because that ruined your little fantasy? Cry more.
Meanwhile Marathon is already bleeding players, slipping out of top 50 and Bungie's 'star of the show' gunplay clearly isn't enough to stop the inevitable slide into irrelevance. 87% positive on launch hype doesn't mean shit when the servers feel empty and the extraction loop gets old fast.

Keep seething and insulting strangers over data you hate. Bungie cooked a shooter that nobody wants to play long. I'll enjoy watching it die knowing that you and MiB are butthurt 😘

Ps: Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes instead of using emojis because you don't have anything of substance to say, we are still waiting on that one single fact you promised. Or are we just vibing with gut feelings now? Keep laughing while the data keeps proving you wrong, destroying your little fantasy world where gameplay doesn't matter.

So much for the guy who want to explain to everyone how the gaming industry is working lmao.

I for one fully support our delusional marathon gaf-crew, we need them in this topic, hell we need them most coz they make funnies claims. They are providers, like true men, providers of entertainment :messenger_fistbump:

Saturday nite we only got to 58k 24h peak but thats understandable coz obviously marathon players being most alpha chads with tons of life to live cant play it all the time :)

I wonder how much monthly cost such a studio like bungie needs, to sustain itself, 10-20m usd? Probably eve more coz its like 700-800 ppl and for sure some make 6 if not 7 figures as industry veterans.
Destiny 2 with under 10k ccu peak wont provide anything substantial anymore so its all on marathon now.

I think the longer marathon is running and bungie isnt restructured(aka shut down) the more money sony is losing, and thats good, dont make it quick clean break like with concord, let sony and hermen "the hitman" hulst suffer for a long time, long enough that he can experience flop of his baby ip 600lbs horizon gaas too :messenger_ok:

Concord was pure loss of 400m usd, which is awful obviously but marathon defo wasnt cheaper to make, it sold much more, probably around 1m copies by now, but that all pales in comparision coz each month bungie is alive we adding those 10-20m usd of studio sustaining cost, with barely any return from destiny2 and smaller return from marathon each week :P

If we keep bungie/marathon running this year only we could break 1b of usd of budget for it :D

Some pubs are trully delusional and can keep very unprofitable gaas games beyond any reasonable timeframe, like here:
Suicide squad is up and running for over 2 years, with terrible alltime peak of 13k and current 24h ccu peak of 258 :D Truth be told it received final update well over a year ago, in jan 2025 so its actual active lifespan was only 11 months :P

It's at 26K today.

Soon it will "stabilize" at 10-15K and will only be able to keep their hardcore fans.

Again, they could have sold 2M units, keep at 15K for a year and be successful if they were a small indie studio.

For Bungie, a 900-headcount monster that has no plan B (Destiny 2 is dying) this is disastrous.

i looked it once i closed it, seriously who df plays shit like this? wrf happen to gaming, most exciting game of this gen is hell let loose , nothing beats it community wise. good luck. this gen has been crap

I have to say, if this title had been released like the single player titles of Sony with a playstation port only first day, Bungie would be getting closed next month. Shame on Steam players for giving them hope.

I have to disagree with you immensely there are so many good games that it's impossible to even keep up, sounds like you limit yourself greatly because I could make a list of games that's just been incredible. Gaming is awesome as ever. I get it with Marathon it isn't my style either but there's an audience, it's just small. And my only major beef with it is I don't like seeing developers take small niche audience genres and try to cater gaming to it with more releases like it.

I want shooters but I don't want them all tied to extraction or br, we need big team battle type shooters and if they're too fixated on these niche genres that's bad for variety.

But my dude, gaming is fucking awesome

2750 subscribers?!?

1000 views! Probably 500 from here clicking it lmfao. 😂

Really? Like, really? Is insight not obviously orthogonal to view and subscriber count? How many subscribers on YouTube did the people that raised you have?

If we keep doing this. If we keep receiving as valuable the things that corporations and mouth-breathers insist are valuable, we are not going to make it.

The question isn't how many views or subscribers; The question is how coherent and plausible the argument. God help us when it is something that actually matters if we can't work that out.

Marathon is currently #70 on Xbox charts.

Bungie's older games on the XB charts:
Halo Master Chief Collection - #32
Destiny 2 - #56

Not sure why, but Halo MCC has seen a surge here of late. I play MCC multiplayer regularly and I've noticed a bunch of new and older returning players. I won't complain, because my K/D ratio has seen a nice bump because of the new players. 😎

I'm slowly getting into Marathon. I need to spend a whole day to really grasp the game and get into it. The miniscule tutorial level for Marathon is beyond useless and tells you almost nothing. I suspect Bungie is loosing a lot of new players in the first 5-10 runs. Without manuals these days, games need to have a solid tutorial level. Bungie fucked up hardcore here.

I still hope halo makes it to ps5 or is all that scrapped? I wanted it at least once... It's good to see the Mc collection still getting play.

I wish bungie would've tried to make the next big arena shooter instead of extraction

But Arc Raiders sold about 4 million copies in its first two weeks and it was getting CCU's of 400K-500K at that time. So if Marathon has sold 2 million so far it should be seeing CCU's much more like 200K, not 50K? 🤔
Entirely depends on if those who bought the game are actually playing as often. That's why the estimates are so off as different games are engaged with differently.

if Marathon did sell 2M and then is only getting these not great CCUs that would not be a great sign either way.

As I said earlier in this thread, the thing that baffled me the most about this game is that they charged $40 for people to play a game they admitted was incomplete by telling reviewers to hold their reviews for end game content they didn't release on the launch date. Literally charging people $40 to be beta testers. I know "Day One DLC" has been a thing before. But this seems to be one of the most enrigous cases. How could anyone look at this and actually want to dive in with such a ridiculous business practice?

This game deserves to fail based on that alone.

Seems to have somewhat stabilised at about 50k peak per day, which whilst not great and doesn't justify the amount Sony have sunk on bungie, it is probably somewhat substanable.

Is it not obvious why?

Marathon should have had a single player/co-op campaign. I think the premise, story, aesthetic would have lended well to a story campaign mode. Also just some kind of arena style pvp too.

Flew by for me. Probably because I've been having a ton of fun playing the game instead of refreshing a chart non-stop.

This has to be the saddest thread in GAF history. Makes the forum look really bad.
Saying this CCU thread is the absolute low point is like walking into a sports bar and declaring the guys debating sports stats are single-handedly ruining the place

The thread might be negative or repetitive, sure, but come on. GAF has seen way worse.

30k less than the peak of a week ago, Bungie could wish for it to stablize at 50k daily, but this week will already go down from that. Is in a steady decline since launch and not even weekend did anything to rise the numbers, probably lot of players already dropped it.

I wonder if Bungie will still try to save the game or just turn off the servers in six months.
What are we talking about here when saying "fix"?

Are they going to expend more time and money adding stuff that could draw more players but was not part of the project in the first place?

Adding PVE and a Single Player campaign have a chance to make it bounce and recover, or is it too little too late?

Realistically, time is short and if they were to do it, by the time they get to finish, CCU would be in the lows already, so why even bother?, this GAAS rat race is about striking hard and fast, get as many players hooked to the game and monetize the hell outta them while they keep engaged to the thing, bouncing new carrots with a stick every short period of time, so they keep playing and don't move on to the next new thing.

Case you have missed it this whole thread about counting.

>So if they adopt a more consumer friendly GAAS

CONSUMER FRIENDLY GAAS

XDDDD
Are you being glib on purpose? You do realise this is an approach that numerous companies employ right? Look at Warframe, Rust, Arc Raiders, Helldivers 2, etc.

Checking in on my favorite reddit thread on GAF. How we all doing today? Game dead yet?

Can the fanboys stick to the OT? We don't go there, let us have this thread to have fun and stop posting your mental breakdown with passive aggressive sentences "muh Reddit, me so smart hurhurhur".

Coming here will just hurt your feelings... I mean it's at 36K a Sunday only one week after it's release

A "stabilized" Saturday in relation to the dropped numbers this past week leads to more declines in the weekdays next week. And a "stabilized" next Saturday that is in line with the dropped numbers that will happen this week will continue the pattern.

TLDR; stable? Lol

I seriously can't believe some people are trying to tell me "extraction" is the next big thing in gaming. It should be a mode in a real game. I could see this being a mode in like Halo Reach or something.

Hell it was a mode in Division. Division had extraction zones but also had a full story, an open map for exploring, etc. But someone people have convinced themselves that no, this is the entire game.

You literally run around in circles and collect garbage. Have our standards really sunk this low?

Yea dude absolutely, it's amazing how hyperbolic dudes will get over a thread just because it's people that don't like their game.

My man. And you loot so fast you can't even look at it and see what the fuck is going on hardly... It's just yea I don't think I could hate a mode more than extraction. I hate BR and id absolutely play that more than extraction

There is no such thing as "consumer friendly" GAAS. It is an inherently hostile model designed to take away control from the player.

The only way a GAAS can ever be "consumer friendly" is if it can be played entirely offline and with private servers, though its argueable whether its even GAAS at that point. Either way, not Marathon's case.

And there is no better demonstration of that fact than you and others here, complaining about the ccu watching and people cheering for this game's demise. Because you all deep down understand if this game doesn't get enough players, it'll get shutdown. And if that happens - due to it being gaas - you will never be able to play it again.

And the endgame? Just a wipe so you can start over

Arc Raiders put its own spin on things, but something tells me Bungie will just copy what's already out there

It was really fascinating how so few of you could see it. I saw it the first time I played Vigor.
