Nvidia at Live GTC : DLSS 5

Ironically all that work modeling pores and uneven skin tone, is going to go to waste.

Which is unfortunate, as the airbrushed look is a step in the opposite direction, in regards to making characters look more realistic.

I know that many here or on the industry won't like this, but for my self I like it very much, consider it a lighting enhance tech like path tracing, also i admit at first on RE9 demo got too much hyped (the ability to have better lighting than cutscenes lighting looks good) then now bite scarred of Ai bullshit , that said nividia confirm that the developers will have full control over this on all Ai behaviors to not miss with there art style, anyway this the future and all the industry will adopt to it and use it as per there needs
 
the thing that made the push for photorealism cool was the fact that developers and artists came together to leverage current graphical techniques in clever and ingenious ways in order to produce something that looks exactly like what you see outside your window. it was a testament to not just hardware but humanity's ability to recreate our beautiful planet using the technology we've built, seeing new features and wondering what clever devs could do with it. Pixel shaders, megatextures, global illumination, raytracing, path tracing, etc.

Adding some language learning clanker who generates over the frames, oversharpens and saturates everything while removing atmospheric elements is NOT that. There's nothing behind it other than using the NPUs to smear over everything generating a result that looks detached from the game's overall art direction. No skilled artists or optimizing involved. Just grab some models, prompt DLSS5 and let it do all the work. Developers made better looking games 10-15 years ago with less development time, worse hardware, and less money, but people want to act like we need THIS to speed up game dev times.

When a community mod is just this model fine-tuned on the aesthetics we want to inject in the game... it will be glorious. I''ll happily use my ML abilities to create mods to bend games towards what I want. Sounds amazing.

So Nvidia has introduced Fake Resolutions, Fake Frames and now......Fake Graphics? At the rate they are going they might as well ask AI to render a fake new graphics card launch that comes with fake CUDA Cores and fake Rasterization performance.
 
Looking at it from more sane pov, aka when its actually gonna be possible to use in actual games, even if nvidia optimises that tech to the max only existing gpu that could use it with decent enough performance of games gonna be 5090 thx to its vast 32gigs of vram pool.

So more avg(aka poor) gamers, which is well over 99%, yes even 5080 owners, gonna have to wait for mid/end of 2027 to get 6080, maybe 6070ti at the very least(easily 1k usd expense, maybe even 1,5k usd).
Who knows how this tech gonna work 1,5 to 2 years from now, imo no need to panic or get too excited coz we are still pretty far away.

Because Nvidia is training it. They have artists, but they aren't an art-first company. The tech needs to get in the hands of devs. Nvidia needs to play their cards right and give developers full control of model training. Otherwise this thing is dead in the water and will be used only by indie cash-grab devs that want maximum photorealism for little effort.

But if they do it right, this could be a game changer.

The technology piggybacks on the game's render. The frame rendered by the game is the input... Meaning lighting is based on the game's lighting. You need to be using Path Tracing (which is what they're doing) to get realistic lighting to feed the model data which will help it render the realistic output image as opposed to some crap lighting setup which might confuse it. Can your hardware render Path Tracing easily? When my GPU is rendering Path Tracing, that's ALL it's gonna be doing and at a reduced native resolution too.

Go ahead and believe they'll magically make this efficient enough in mere months so that a GPU rendering a game in Path Tracing can use this without a performance hit.

This is absolutely amazing technology. People who think this clashes with the artistic intent: they're not changing any assets here you know! It LOOKS like that because the lighting improvement is SO dramatic!

It's basically how those games would look if you applied CG level path tracing to them. You're talking a couple of generations of RT improvement in a single step. It's a gigantic step forward for rendering.
 
A lot of AI hate in this thread. It looks like a true generational leap that we haven't seen in a decade. This tech was always coming. Look at my post history. The implementation will require developers to have control of the model trained on their own high fidelity assets.

Yeah, there's gonna be devs who use off the shelf slop to make their games look hyper detailed without any effort. But the ceiling for detailed, curated, immersive worlds just went to the sky and it isnt coming back down.

Not every game needs to look 'hyper realistic' with this horrible filter applied to it.
