Nvidia at Live GTC : DLSS 5

He's so over dramatic. Left gaf apparently for petty reasons as well. He had a bluesky before everyone else as well.
i was there when he left gaf. we all immediately stood up for him, literally called out the guy for being rude immediately and the mods even banned the guy in a flash, and yet John saw the dude get banned and decided to leave anyway. Super lame.

You can have your memes until this ships but this is very interesting tech it it changes how it can leverage making it easier for devs in any way.

Of course I don't want AI to make games and render this without dev input but I hope anyone rational will know that it's up to the devs in how the develop this with their games and specific use cases in mind.

It's super-weird. Some of these people actually posts sensible post otherwise, so it's sad to see them lose their shit like this. It's so silly.

I could understand it if FromSoftware integrated lazy "filters" on top of their own art before shipping their games, but this is not that. It's just Nvidia making general demos and examples like they always have. I doubt the studios and devs have been involved much here, if at all.

So it's just a super fancy lighting filter and they can adjust how it works?

These new DLSS modes will have a large range of options to adjust it to fit the way you want it then, kinda neat.

People are stupid in general. They are lashing out at DF because DF has turned into a joke of their former selves praising every big game like the second coming. This hatred is a bit misguided but its happening because consumer resentment towards their hype oriented coverage been building up for a while now. they caught flack just recently over the crimson desert pro coverage, and the handwaving of the 720p console versions of high on life 2.
 
These tools could be revolutionary for game development and game presentation assuming they're used responsibly. But in the way that UE5 games start to look generic and samey, and start to take on a certain "look" that you can spot from a mile away... I just fear we're headed down the same path with this stuff. Devs shortcutting the creative process and just pushing slop out the door to turn a buck is a future i'm not too excited for.

That image of Grace looks like it was pulled directly out of Midjourney and slapped into the game. It's the classic "attractive, AI-generated girl with waxy skin and a thousand yard stare" look that you can find all over Pinterest right now. I have a hard enough time avoiding that stuff on the internet, I don't need it in my games. Make something unique with these tools and then let's talk.

When it doesn't touch character models it looks great IMO. It's gonna be case by case basis and only improve. And it's gonna take an enormous amount of VRAM to accomplish so idk what their plan is.
 
RE9 example is specifically awful because RE characters have distinct Capcom touch. They are highly detailed and stylized at the same time, they are 'anime' just enough to be believable but still distinctly Resident Evil. Especially female characters like Ada, Grace or children.

Nvidia slop demo just erased decades of artistic and stylistic legacy in one beautiful AI touch.

Yeah Grace basically looks like some kind of manga babe brought to life. She's like some idealised version of a woman. So the model, when lit properly like this, is just going to unavoidably have that "AI slop" (cliche alert!) look to it. So that's unfortunate in terms of confusing the sheep who keep bleating about how AI will destroy all art. But the underlying improvement in the rendering is still HUGE.
 
This made me laugh this AI looking or with added make up look 😆 But the silver lining is this might help to fix those uglified characters due to twisted dei design crap 😝
 
Ok I just read this part:

This is not enough. Like... at all. This is going to end up in the garbage bin after the novelty wears off. I'm sure the AI bros will turn it on for every game and forget what the original even looked like. Meanwhile, the game's animation will look 3 generations behind and the uncanny valley will turn most people off.

Devs need to be able to provide their entire concept art and prerendered footage as input. Not a bunch of predefined sliders. Lol. Wake me up in another 5 -10 years!

Sorry, but I dont know a tech oriented channel who doesn't hype new tech. They are just an easier target because they are the biggest gaming tech oriented channel. No matter the end results, its seriously impressive tech that could revolutionize gaming.

The Crimson Desert drama was also idiotic. Pearl Abyss sent them a Pro for testing, but didnt send other consoles. They wouldnt be able to cover them even if they wanted to. But again: people are idiots.

Not every game needs to look 'hyper realistic' with this horrible filter applied to it.

It's using generative AI to apply realistic lighting you dumbo.

It's a lighting change AND gen AI - or rather the former via the latter.

There's no reason to use this over DLSS 4.5. It destroys the game's visual identity and it's clearly extremely demanding hardware wise.

It's not a filter. It's more like lighting acceleration. It uses inference to analyse an image and add extra lighting fidelity, so extra shadows, better occlusion, light scattering etc. It's really just like DLSS but for lighting quality instead of resolution: takes solid but incomplete data and fills in the blanks via hugely complex alogorithms.
 
Go ahead and believe they'll magically make this efficient enough in mere months so that a GPU rendering a game in Path Tracing can use this without a performance hit.

Who said it would be free? Obviously it's going to have an impact. All of the nvidia AI shit has an impact.
 
This is absolutely amazing technology. People who think this clashes with the artistic intent: they're not changing any assets here you know! It LOOKS like that because the lighting improvement is SO dramatic!

It's basically how those games would look if you applied CG level path tracing to them. You're talking a couple of generations of RT improvement in a single step. It's a gigantic step forward for rendering.

A lot of AI hate in this thread. It looks like a true generational leap that we haven't seen in a decade. This tech was always coming. Look at my post history. The implementation will require developers to have control of the model trained on their own high fidelity assets.

Yeah, there's gonna be devs who use off the shelf slop to make their games look hyper detailed without any effort. But the ceiling for detailed, curated, immersive worlds just went to the sky and it isnt coming back down.

I agree with you both. I'm a little bummed at these replies. This tech is absolutely fucking incredible, like holy fucking shit. Whoever coined the term "AI slop" has set us back a decade. I can't wait until that's finally out of use. It's such a stupid, lazy, luddite response.
 
I don't think it will stop here... gradually the future is clearly bending towards a pipeline where the game engine itself maintains very low-fidelity rendering to maintain game consistency and control, but all the details and aesthetics migrate to an ML layer on top. The former will keep shrinking, the latter will keep growing.
