Switch 2 - Handheld Boost Mode for Switch 1 games!

I just booted up Metroid Prime Remastered. Looks clean as hell on the Switch 2 screen.
This is far the best looking one yet.
Metroid dread is kinda eh..

But fuck me prime remastered is amazing now.

Diablo 2 also looks so much fucking better

Fantasian demo looks nice and runs at 60 FPS.

Great way to play it now. Previously started on Apple Arcade but never finished it. PC version doesn't support ultrawide. I may grab it for Switch if/when there's a drought.

If anyone is curious about XC2. I didn't tag which version is before/after but you can probably tell.

This is game changer for old sub-native games.

Tried Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Scarlet and Cruis'n Blast. What a game changer! I can actually see clearly where I'm driving in Cruis'n Blast and it's so smooth. Also took some nice photos of Ayane while testing.

FINALLY! I have been saying this is a must literally since the Switch 2 was announced!

you can now make Switch 1 games think they are in Docked mode, even when playing handheld.

so now, if a game is 1080p docked, it will be 1080p in handheld mode! instead of looking like a low resolution mess!

this is huge news for the Xenoblade games especially!
Xenoblade 2 looked like an absolute shitshow in handheld mode before.

This is great, non Nintendo like (enabling something that may not make some game work or work well despite 99.8% of games benefiting from this?) but great.

This is almost like a free Switch 2 edition patch as it makes games native to the display (most of them) and it might look resolution wise better on the handheld than docked 🤣.

the issue with docked mode improvements through a system setting is that it would be untested.

docked mode is a tested setting of the game, so offering it while playing on the handheld isn't risking any real technical issues.

and I kinda doubt Nintendo is gonna do something like Microsoft and offer resolution or fps boosts without patches, because they not only would need to test each game they boost, but also need a way to inject the change like Microsoft does... and not sure they can do that as easily as Microsoft can.
MS has a wrapper or a VM or something like that so they can implement a translation layer to old games like they did with the Xbox One -> X360 BC, Nintendo nor Sony thought that much in advance

Welp Vampyr plays way better this way. Same with Tony Hawk 1+2

I hope this won't stop publishers to release Switch 2 versions for their games

I am actually kinda shocked they gave us this boost mode.

while I was hoping for it to be a thing ever since the system was even leaked, I still always thought it will be unlikely, and very unlike Nintendo to offer such a mode...

so this is a very pleasant surprise

For better or for worse, modern Nintendo doesn't seem to be old Nintendo. I didn't think this would happen either.

They feel more corporate managed than wacky funny enigma managed.

I'm a half step away from believing they would release an UE5 remake of OOT.

When hell freezes over.. I'd expect a seppuku on a Nintendo Direct from the higher ups if that ever happened.

I was hoping they'd do this

Some og games in handheld mode look…not great even on the 2
Even? I would say especially because they render at a lower than native resolution and in some cases a much lower one Switch 1's LCD is native 720p while Switch 2's LCD is native 1080p). I would expect OG switch 1 games without any patches to look considerably worse on Switch 2 handheld mode than they do on the OG Switch (not to talk about OLED Switch).

Just threw in Xenoblade 2... and man, it really is so much better!

like, even docked mode never looked amazing or anything, BUT docked mode on a handheld screen, actually looks fine!

took 2 quick snaps to show how bad handheld mode looked in this game:

Of course you're German, everything makes sense now

I'm still baffled they acknowledge what a framerate was and presented it as a selling point for Switch 2

Fast RMX now looks better than Fusion :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Other games that now look great are Quake, Virtua Racing, Zero Gunner 2 and Resident Evil 4.

I had already stopped buying old Switch games, since they look terrible on the new one's screen. With this thing I now have tons of new games to play.

Cool, I remember some were asking about this very thing before the Switch 2 launched and it's good to see it implemented. No reason why this shouldn't have be done.

Man between this and PSSR2 dropping, it's a great day to have a backlog. I'm going to have to really reprioritize what games I'm going to play next with all these updates.

I just bought a Switch 1 game today for the first time since Switch 2 came out, so, you're welcome everyone.
What game?

Surprised Nintendo didn't offer this as a worlds first paid system update.
Don't give them ideas, lol.

Old guard would not have released a $100 virtual boy shell that is only playable while your sub service is active either, yet here we are. Any higher ups that would care have higher-higher ups and they aren't named Iwata.

Switch 1: Iwata's last gift. Kimishima just had to keep the show running with all the machinations Iwata left behind to launch it, including BOTW, and he was neither great nor terrible. They didn't make very many great Switch games that were not first Wii U games though, and they're still selling Iwata-era WiiU games as backbones of the library.

Furukawa on S2: "it has the look and feel and quality you expect from Nintendo" gave me Tim Cook taking over for Steve Jobs vibes, with a tinge of defensiveness. That's where the framerate suddenly became relevant. Full-on corporate mode licensing IPs for toys and movies, building theme parks and whoring out the back catalog to an extreme. Since the only new features in 2 were more power and I guess mouse mode. That's why their "Nintendo Land" game to teach you the system was that $10 welcome tour to educate you about mice and framerates...which I think would utterly baffle Iwata. Like "you think you're trying to do what I did, but you're copying me all wrong".

It's sometimes a good thing of course like this boost mode, but the shift in corporate identity is still a shock.

Mortal Kombat 11 handheld is significantly better. It was one of the ugliest games I've seen in a while until this update. It's still obviously a bit ugly on the TV but with the smaller Switch 2 screen and I'm guessing running near 1080p it's pretty sharp.

I don't use the Switch in handheld mode but this is a cool feature to have. I'm surprised that Nintendo actually implemented something no-brainer like this.

Really cool, yesterday I was playing Immortals Fenyx Rising on my S2, today I will try this mode out. The last time I played something docked was Etrian Odyssey I think, and the cursor in the map was a blocky circle as if it was a low resolution one. I guess it will be the same in boost mode.

I'm currently on SMTVV so excited to give this a go. Doesn't look too bad on portable by defeault, but it should be really nice with this!
