Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

I've always considered Zelda retellings centered around the mytheme of Hyrule. The notion that they are set in stone stories that follow sequentially, or that there are diverging time-lines, etc is far too complicated for something that is essentially a coming of age adventure. Same with mario. word of the day: mytheme.

I like that idea, but I'm not sure it works with Mario since some of the Mario RPGs reference each other. The 3D Mario games are mostly unconnected, though, so I could sort of see those games as being part of a mytheme (Firefox's spell-checker doesn't like that word).

Your theory conflicts with the instruction manual of the game. It's not a dream in the middle of Ocarina of Time unless Link to the Past (or another Zelda where you beat Ganon) is also a dream in the middle of Ocarina of Time and Koholint Island is a dream within a dream, Inception style. You're wrong. Get over it.
I'd say that Zelda Timeline is so strange that I don't really care if each person has its own... I read (from NoA, I think) once a timeline where Awakening was happening during the boat sequence in Zelda 2. I liked the idea, so that's where I usually place it.

Many manuals don't make sense, anyway, we don't even know for sure according to them the gender of Birdo :)

I find it hard to take people seriously if they use the term "butt-hurt."

So you had to say something about it five or six hours after the fact? Point taken nonetheless. I could have used the word "sore", or some euphemism like "panties in a twist". On the other hand, NeoGAF isn't exactly a haven of maturity either (hey guys Zelda Williams is watching us, lets talk about banging her!), so I didn't think anyone would make a big deal out of using the term just once (even though I myself hate the term; it was all that came to mind at that moment).

Hmm. I wonder if anyone has any mind-blowing video game facts to share.

And here comes the first ridiculously butt-hurt response:

I'm sorry that I used something posted on Nintendo of America's of website by a guy who wrote the English screen text for all aforementioned Zelda games in Japan, working right alongside the development team, to challenge your beliefs. Your anger couldn't be more justified, really! Just try to make a little sense, though, and I'd be much obliged:

As much as I try, I can't boil this sentence down to anything that makes sense. Dan Owsen said that the Miyamoto timeline that was never published in Nintendo Power was apparently official despite Miyamoto saying otherwise about the timeline that was never published in Nintendo Power (despite it being apparently official, you know!)? lol wat? It's like you were so worked up because "OH NO HE DIDN'T HE DID NOT JUST QUOTE DAN OWSEN" that you forgot to write in complete sentences.

Miyamoto has even said things about the timeline that just make no sense at all. He doesn't even know what's going on and he made the series. Fans will create their own timeline theories. No one cares what a translator says about it. Really the only person anyone trusts about the timeline is Aonuma.

And ridiculously butt-hurt response? Come on , man. You're talking about a Zelda timeline. There's no need to act like that.

Um..yeah? That kinda goes with the chauvinistic shenanigans I was just talking about, doesn't it? And re-inforces why I didn't think using a silly, childish term like "butthurt" would offend anyone.

For crying out loud, PLEASE shut up about Zelda and talk about videogame facts that blow your mind! I'm starting to think that even if I had a mind-blowing game fact to share, someone five hours late to the argument would still and go "U ARE SO IMMATURE FOR SAYING BUTTHURT I HATE YOU AND UR ZELDA IDEAS". Person posting below me, please. get. back. on. topic.

All I'll say is that plot text in a manual, especially a US manual for a Japanese-developed game released in the 90's, is not a reliable resource for anything.

Otherwise, Zelda timeline talk,

GTFO.

Well that would work if pretty much every 3D Zelda didn't connect storywise.

But anyway RockXLight ruins another thread, big surprise, get out, etc.

This is almost certainly the truth of what's happened with the damned games. I promise you all the developers don't think about a timeline for these games anywhere near as much as the fan community does. And whenever they've come out and said "Oh, uh, yeah, there's an official timeline in the office, but we can't tell you", it's just them trying to convince the fanbase that they're taking continuity and timelines as seriously as all of you, to save face.

Using text from a game manual from 1993 to back up a point like this is a joke. The localization professional that translated that manual probably works for an entirely different company now and was just coming up with flavor text to provide context for a game in a series whose stories were never really all that important.

My thoughts exactly. Now let there be no more talk of this please.

They do? I thought the cross-over in term of story was more or less within small groups of games, like how Majora's Mask is about the events after Ocarina, and wind waker and phantom hourglass being connected somehow, etc. It's whatever tho, I don't have a lot of reverence for the overarching story in zelda - if others want to debate it that's fine, I'm just a bemused at the frothing that comes of it. carers gonna care I suppose.

Didn't causing this amount of crap in a thread and then doing something just like this while still a Junior used to warrant a ban? I certainly don't want to backseat mod, but holy crap.

I think we need to reboot it with a new, streamlined OP, a list of the major "mind blown" topics already posted, music rules, etc.

But someone will bump the old topic, and then we'll have a split timeline.

I caused crap by expressing an opinion. Some people thought I was an ass about it, so I worked quickly to try to end it and it has been nothing but out of my hands for the last few hours. If you want to tell me that the way Emcee acted toward didn't warrant the harsh language, cool, that's your opinion. But don't invoke that junior crap with me, please. I opened this account nearly two years ago and have been visiting almost daily ever since. I'm sorry that I have had too much of a social life to reach 300 posts yet---it doesn't make you or any other full-fledged member better than me.

Junior Member status is a probationary period is what hikaru is getting at. You can't get away with as much as an established member. No matter how much of a social life you have.

Except the Funny Pics thread. Or the Donkey Kong '94 thread. Or the Creepy Images thread.
Or the Link's Awakening DX thread. Or the current Lulztec/Anonymous thread. Or any other thread that I'm currently posting. You know, except for those.

Not that I'm admitting to doing anything, mind you, I'm just wondering how I've built up this reputation, according to some people, of being this extraordinary thread ruiner.

It's cool to want to defend your opinion and stuff. Just gotta learn to pump the brakes every now and then until you get de-juniored, is all.

I think a new, more streamlined thread is in order. Maybe a multi-person job, with someone taking a certain number of pages to gather all the info.

If you're so desperate for an "unconventional" theory that ties Marin and Malon together then you'd be much better off trying to argue that Oracles Link is Link's Awakening Link.

The Oracles games make many apparent efforts to tie themselves in as a prequel to Link's Awakening, including the appearance of Malon and Talon in Oracle of Seasons.

The correct way to stop this shit is NOT to keep doing it! Leave this thread! Stop arguing and saying you're trying to stop this! Don't post in here for a day or two!

EDIT: Is that picture from the Oracle of Seasons manual or the game itself? I'm sure I saw it together with that game in some way. Love the art.

I've always not given a shit about the Zelda storyline/timeline because it doesn't really matter. The devs (outside of maybe Aonuma) don't care, so why should you?

Long time no see!

Donkey Boy! It seems
like years since we last met!

It's about time you visited
your frail, old Grandpa!

Hey! Can you spare
your old pappy a banana?

And what have you brought
for your old Grandpa?

Well, you've amazed
your old Grandpa
by getting this far!

So, you've finally come
to get some game play advice
from your old Grandpa!

Diddy boy! Where's Donks?

Diddy, you young pup!
Boy, I can't believe
how much you've grown!

Here's another MOTHER one. If you've played MOTHER 3, you know that you save by talking to frogs. Itoi says he wanted to use frogs since they are tiny, could be anywhere, don't get in your way, but stand out. Itoi got the idea of using frogs from a song he wrote called "Furimukeba Kaeru" which translates to "If You Turn Around, Frog". In the song, when someone fails, a frog comes along telling the person "Oh, it's nothing to worry about", sort of similar to the frogs in MOTHER 3.

Mind blowing? Maybe not... but it's helping to get the thread on track and it's a cool thing to know if you're a MOTHER fan. I found that from an interview with Itoi about MOTHER 3 that was translated by Tomato, one of the people who worked on the fan translation. If you'd like to read it, the full interview is here. It's definitely worth reading if you are a MOTHER fan.

I am, but I still haven't been able to make time to play Mother 3. I'm such a huge Earthbound fan that everything needs to be perfect before I finally play the sequel.

But speaking of Tomato and Earthbound Central...I don't recall anyone posting these here, but did you know that Earthbound soundtrack composers borrowed samples from The Beach Boys..

http://earthboundcentral.com/2011/04/earthbound-and-the-beach-boys/

..and John Lennon?

http://earthboundcentral.com/2011/04/the-sound-stone-and-john-lennon/

The Cave of the Past and the Sound Stone songs sampled Beach Boys song Deidre and Lennon song Give Peace a Chance respectively.

Reportedly that's why we dont have a VC release of the game.

Lol. I don't know, but it seems like a serious missed opportunity for dollars in this crazy world of online multiplayer games. Just seems like a natural fit for online co-op and Dog fighting.

MOTHER 3 is fantastic. You have to play it sometime. The fan translation is top-notch.

Also, going along with those, listen to this song from MOTHER 3 when you fight a somewhat common enemy toward the beginning named Mr. Batty. I don't think I need to post another link to the actual song, it's instantly recognizable, especially since you are fighting a bat haha.

Yeah, pretty much. It's a little odd because Earthbound was re-released in Japan for the GBA with no music changes but I guess Japanese copyright laws aren't as strict.

Also, here's a full list of things that would need to be changed in order for Earthbound to be released on the VC in the US. You'd probably also like it RockXLight since it has a ton of other music posted that sounds similar to popular music.

Hay guize, did u no that Link's Awakening takes place during *gets banned* - has a bunch of hidden songs in the file select screen? Most people know that you can hear a remix of the Zelda theme by setting your name to "ZELDA" (and a lot of us figured that out by thinking Link's name was "Zelda" xP), but there's more. In the German version, setting your name to "MOYSE" (the name of a translator) plays a different song, setting your name to "LOLO" in the French version plays another song, and setting your name to "とたけけ" in the Japanese version plays Totaka's song. "とたけけ" means "Totakeke," which is his nickname. (It's a different version from the version of Totaka's song that plays in Richard's Villa, too, so Totaka's song actually appears twice in Link's Awakening. Or three times, if you count the fact that there's an unused Ocarina version in the game's code.)
