I dropped by phone and the back cracked. If I take it to the genius bar will they replace it for a price? (I've had it for over a year).
First time is usually free, otherwise $30.

In preparation of my new white unicorn iPhone 4S I have removed my bumper from my iPhone 4 and I have forgotten how awesome this phone is without the bumper.

I have no scratches nor have I dropped it, which may or may not be due to the bumper being on for over a year. It's so hard to want to put it back on.

Can someone please answer a question for me?

I'm a heavy user and I've never owned an iPhone before. Since the battery isn't swappable, how is the life of the battery over time? Is it going to last 2 years with heavy usage almost daily? Similarly, is the phone going to get too hot and "wear out" during the same period? It's the one thing I'm really nervous about...
Anyone? :)

My Sprint order status has been updated to "The order has been submitted and requires manual processing. If there is an issue processing the order we will contact you." I also now have a (currently useless) UPS tracking number.

So excited!

I can only speak anecdotally, but I know a lot of people with iPhones over the years and never noticed any issues with the battery. I used an OG Iphone 4gig for 3 years, didn't upgrade til the 4, and didn't have any problems myself. If there were an issue, it's something applecare should cover you on.

The art and technology of iPhone photography is iPhoneography. 👍

What's new in iPhone 4S's camera hardware
What's new in iOS5's camera software

Basics (NB: Apple doesn't include a manual in the box)
Apple's iPhone 4S (web) User Guide can be accessed (only) from a browser on the iPhone4S.
Apple's iPhone 4S (PDF) manual can be downloaded from their website (after Oct 14)

Guides
Killer Photos with Your iPhone An oldie but goodie. If you have an iPhone 3G/3GS start reading this before selling off that old p.o.s. (and perhaps you'll reconsider upgrading 😏). If you have an iPhone4, or any other cameraphone, you should still get this book as the techniques taught are timeless even if the tech described is ancient.
Create Great iPhone Photos A more recent guide, published after the iPhone 4, that's a great introduction to iPhoneography. For the advanced beginner (it's a little light on basic photo taking techniques). It's a great read with many useful tips.

Accessories
Lens
Jelly Lens filters i.e. fun toys.
Fisheye, Macro, Wide Angle and Telephoto Phone Lenses easily attachable stick-on lens. Best bang for your buck from a reputable seller.
Olloclip the popular three (fisheye, wide angle and macro) in a convenient package. Only fits naked iPhones
iPro Lens System. iPro i.e "professional grade". Heh, iPhone lenses are big business so a big business finally decided to step in. Lenses (wide angle, fisheye) are screwed into the provided case. Expensive.
Factron Quattro A *ahem* premium case with many screw on lenses e.g. wide & micro, tele conversion lens, fisheye, close up lens. (i.e. wide angle, fisheye and macro). Expensive.
The iPhone Telephoto Lens offers 8X telephoto view. attaches to an included case and comes with a mini-tripod.
USBFever lenses Cheapest and widest selection' has everything from lenses to tripods. Ships worldwide but takes a while to arrive (from HongKong)
60~100X Zoomable Microscope one of the more intriguing lenses available 'exclusively' from USBFever. Converts the iPhone into a portable microscope. attaches to an included case.
EnCinema SLR Lens Adapter the adapter has an EOS mount. For the hardcore iPhoneographer
The iPhone SLR Mount Case-adapter combo. Canon EOS model or Nikon model. For the (wealthy) hardcore iPhoneographer
[panorama] Pixeet fisheye lens+app Not really a panorama lens per se as you're still doing most of the work. It's an option though. the fisheye lens attaches to an included case with their "patented magnetic system". *ugh*
[panorama] Kogeto Dot attaches via a 'case' and shots 360º panoramic video
[panorama] GoPano Micro same idea as the kogeto dot, attaches a bigger apparatus via a case and will shot 360º panoramic video

Tripod
Glif An elegant tripod mound and stand for your naked iPhone. Positions the iPhone in landscape on the tripod
iPhone Tripod Holder mount cheaper than the Glif. doesn't work as a stand. positions the iPhone in portrait on the tripod.
XShot iPhone 4 Case a case that can attach universal tripod adapter in either orientation
Gorrilapod/Gorrilamobile a flexible adaptable tripod. The iPhone 4 edition comes with a case. Also provides a free camera app (that doesn't need the accessories to work)
Gymbl/Gymbl Pro a more traditional tripod for the iPhone 4. Has a gimbal (hence the name) which allows for easy panoramic photos. Comes with a case.

Steadicams
Red Pop the simplest way to make the iPhone easier to grip and steady when taking photos. Attaches via the dock connector and pressing the big red button automatically opens the free app. Kickstarter project—funding ended.
iSteadi a standard steadicam. Kickstarter project—funding still ongoing (30 more days to reach their goal).
OWLE Bubo Ergonomic 'case' mount. A film makers platform. The screwed in lens can be replaced with iPhone DSLR lens adapters and the included microphone can be replaced with a lights/flash. Can be placed on a tripod.
Steadicam Smoothee from a big business, the 'professional's solution'. It works, what else can I say?

Microphones
OWLE Bubo comes with a microphone although you get all the other baggage besides
ThumbTacks small, simple, cheap. gives a decent boost to the iPhone's range.
iRig Mic the first handheld microphone for your iPhone

Display Pictures
Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (see similar) connects your iPhone to an iPad to view the pictures on the bigger screen and for backup
Apple Digital AV Adapter connects to any device with HDMI input
Apple TV connects to the iPhone over a WiFi network
Bolle BP-10 Photo Printer the first the only the last printer that connects directly to your iPhone. 4 x 6" prints via the free app.

Decorations

first up, the battery is swappable, either at an apple store or if you buy one from a third party. theres some screws at the bottom of the case to remove the back panel and you can swap the battery if the original fails.

now, saying that, I’ve experienced no issues with battery life failing after using the iPhone a LOT daily for over a year. it would take many more cycles before the maximum charge would start to dwindle. and, at that point, you can get the battery replaced.

So I am looking at car chargers, and it seems like most of them are improperly wired.

If you look at the comments, you have people saying how they are detected as USB data connections instead of chargers and thus charge at a much slower rate:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003SE6LFI/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Anybody have good recommendations for chargers that are that small, and are properly wired?

I did get a car charger, and it was useful for ensuring that the battery didn't deplete, but it would take FOREVER to charge the phone. For example I took a 30 minute drive and the battery percentage increased only by 2%

This might be a dumb question, but I'll ask. I need to get a new phone, but I really despise contracts. I noticed if I buy an unlocked Iphone 4S I can't use Virgin Mobiles sweet unlimited plan for 35 bucks.

If I bite the bullet, buy a contracted sprint 4s phone, and when the two years is up can I move that phone to virgin mobile service? Or would I still be locked out?

Question -- can I turn on the iPhone 4S and have it get to the home screen so that I can check the screen for any issues BEFORE I activate it?

Turning it on doesn't automatically activate it correct?

No, I don't think you can. But maybe Sprint will be uncharacteristically kind and merciful for a telecom.

When you boot up the phone, you'll have to activate it before you can do anything else.

When I was looking at pics of the 4S, I noticed that there is a small strip of plastic (or rubber) around the edges of the glass on both the front and back of the phone (right where it meets the metal sides.) How does the white phone hold up to discoloration on this exposed plastic edge? I'm not worried about the glass area (which has been discussed before), but since I plan to go case-less, I'm curious about the plastic edge. I'm sure it will probably be fine. For those of you with standard 4s, is it hard plastic or a softer rubber?

Epic iPhoneography Post
Great post, thanks for this. I've been a huge fan of this since I lost my 5DII a couple years ago. Really helped me get back to the basics of photography and appreciate the value of "the one that's with you". No amount of megapixels or focus points will improve your composition or artistic eye for great photos. Never mind the fact that the 4S will undoubtedly be on of the best phone-cams out there.

Edit: love love love the Leica skin, but the tripod mount on the hipstamatic is super useful. Guess I can do both as long as the skin fits under the case.

It's hard, whatever it is. I've had my phone day one, never put anything on it, and use the hell out of, and it has not a single scratch, ding, or dent in that part.

In my experience, the iPhone 4 gets some of the, if not THE best battery life of any smartphone out there. It's incredible really. I only realized this as I've used multiple other android handsets in the past year and nothing has come even close.

Bummer but thanks for letting me know. Is there any decent pre paid option for the Iphone in the USA?

At the very least I can hit up Sprint's 80 dollars a month unlimited plan. I just don't want to be paying 80 bucks a month for service, which just seems ridiculous to me. Rather pay 900 bucks up front for a no contract 64GB Iphone 4S and keep the costs down long term. The upcoming 30 dollar tmobile/walmart plan would suit me fine. Guess I'll have to stick with android.

Really? Even with iOS 5 that is now PC-Free?
I'm fairly confident that it's still the case, even with iOS 5. The difference is that you no longer have to connect to iTunes to activate your phone.

But I still think you have to activate before you can use it.

All iOS 5 devices start off with a series of set screens on that dark grey canvas, inviting you to activate your device, create an iCloud account, sync using a pc, restore from a backup, etc.

It will be completely PC free.

Yes.

The question was if you can get to the home screen before activating your phone. The answer is still "no," even with iOS 5.

For all the case talk, these lil bad boys from Think Geek should work on the 4S. Ordered a science and engineering case last night.

Oh shit. If these fit the 4S I might have to get one.

Anyone know of any good case that's red on the bumper but also has clear protection in the back? Full red is fine too, but I'm looking for something that doesn't feel plasticky. It's kind of specific, but any help would be appreciated. It'll be for a white iPhone.

They should. They fit both AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4s. Don't see why they shouldnt fit.

I've been looking for a decent Doctor Who case, but can't find anything nice looking. Any ideas? Thinkgeek has nothing.

Links in the pics.
Almost got one of those, but I am trying to find a good one that makes the phone look like a TARDIS. There are some out there, but iffy on the cases themselves.

Quick question as I'm moving from a 3GS -> 4S: As long as I do a backup/sync of my iPhone 3GS to my iTunes and just connect the new one after it is activated, am I good to go on contacts/settings, etc?

Never upgraded, so just wondering how the process goes. I should get it Friday, switch out the SIM cards, activate using the emails they sent out, and then sync and voila?

I have an icloud syncing question I hope someone can answer. I gave my mother my old 3GS a few months ago but let her continue to use my itunes account information so she could use the apps and stuff I bought. When I activate my 4S and sync it with my contact information from google and from my imac, will it also be pushed to her phone? Is there a way to turn off syncing contacts to her phone?

Don't think you have to swap out sim cards, not even sure you can because 3gs used normal SIM cards while 4 and 4s uses micro SIM.

Just backup on itunes and 'restore from backup' on your new 4s and everything should be fine.

Yeah you won't need to swap the SIM. AT&T just moves your account info over from the SIM in the 3GS to the SIM in the 4S. Same thing happened when I went from iPhone OG to 3GS.

If you back everything up to iCloud first, you won't even need to plug in to iTunes. You can just let it Wi-Fi sync the first time you plug it in to charge. Though obviously that will take a long time. It's probably best to do the initial sync via cable just for the speed advantage.

Yeah, I'm giving my 3GS to my eldest daughter and I'd like her to have access to the games I've bought but don't want it to participate in iCloud at all (and don't want her to be able to change it) - not sure how that's going to work at the moment. :/

I guess I know what I'll be fiddling around with next weekend.

iTunes Home Sharing might be a way around this. If you keep all the phones on separate iCloud accounts, but tie them all to one central account via iTunes Home Sharing, they should be able to access each other's apps and songs and other content, but keep personal stuff like contacts separate.

Yep-that's how I did it.

With all these reports of people receiving ETA's of 2 weeks from ATT to get their phone, I'm kinda worried. I ordered thru Apple on the 7th, should I be safe to believe I'll get my phone on the 14th?

If it said "Delivers Oct 14" when you ordered, you should be fine. But you can check your order status. I ordered the morning of the the 7th and mine still says it's set for delivery on Friday.

This is why you order directly from Apple. Why add a middle man when it's both faster and easier to go directly through Apple? I'd never trust one of these phone carriers to get this process right.

Here's a screenshot of my current order status

a9vg.jpeg

I hardly ever drop my phone, but I'm too paranoid to not have a case. Actually, I went naked for about a week and a half when I first got my 3GS while I was waiting for my new case to arrive. As expected, I dropped the 3GS while waiting for the case to arrive. To make it worse, I dropped it on rough asphalt. I got lucky though, the only damage it suffered was a slight scuff on the chrome bezel (which the case covered up).

From what I hear, the 4 is more slippery than the 3GS, so this time I have ordered a case in advance.

For those looking for minimal protection, check out the case I got, the iSkin Claro.

a9wU.jpeg

http://www.iskin.com/iphone4/claro/

The most important thing for me is that the case is a soft, rubbery one. I like rubbery cases because they provide lots of extra grip for the phone, which makes it much more difficult to drop. Because of that, I don't need to worry about it being too protected, since the chances of me dropping it are pretty slim.

I use a similar case from iSkin on my 3GS right now and I love it.
