I know someone who lost his iPhone-he noticed it after his wife left for work and took the daughter to school. He looked all over for it, called his wife and had her look in the car, everything. (This was prior to Find My iPhone)

Needless to say, he was bummed out all day. His wife came home, and he went out to greet her and the kid and he noticed his phone was on the hood of her car. His case was one of those rubbery ones with the grip. He put in on the hood of the car when he was getting the kid in the carseat. His wife then drove down the freeway an hour each way to and from work, parked on a street during workhours, and the phone stayed there the entire time.

I love the look of the iPhone, but I know that the second I drop and break the thing I'll hate myself.

As such, it has lived in a candy shell case its entire life, changing colors every 3-4 months.

Lmfao. Holy shit. That's insane.

Similar story to my boss'.

She has a rubber case on her 3GS and had accidentally left it on the roof of her Subaru Forester before leaving her home in Half Moon Bay to drive to into SF for work. Thought she lost her phone and was kinda bummed the entire day. Drove home and started hearing a buzzing coming from the roof of her car. Needless to say that she found her phone.

My roommate's 3GS (in a case) fell out of his pocket into the snow and was run over by a Ford F150. Still worked great when we found it two hours later!

My current case is a hard silicone type one that has a little grip. It keeps it in the pocket in my dashboard under the stereo. Put it in there caseless once and it was sliding all around and flew out a few times.

After reading reviews and watching YouTube videos for what feels like hours I think I've decided on these two cases:

iPhone Suede Jacket with the pocket by SF Bags http://www.sfbags.com/products/iphone-cases/suedejacket-iphone.php I figured I can use this when I don't feel like having the extra bulk of a case and just want to carry the phone in my pocket. $14

Trim black case by Switcheasy http://www.switcheasy.com/products/TRIM/TRIM.php This will probably be my everyday case. I like how it protects the sides and the back while not hiding the design of the iPhone. $19.99

I was then thinking of doing a SGP iPhone 4 Screen Protector
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Q6VU0I/?tag=neogaf0e-20 $15.99

Anyone with these cases or screen protector care to offer their opinion before I place my orders?

Also I ordered the BookBook case http://twelvesouth.com/products/bookbook_iphone/ it's nice and I thought it would be nice to have a wallet and phone in one. After seeing it in person I don't think it's going to work for me. Using the phone in the case seems like it will be awkward and no camera hole. Also the price was $59.99 I can get two cases and my screen protectors and still be saving $10 dollars.

Other options I was looking at were the Speck Candyshell and the http://www.speckproducts.com/iphone-case/candyshell-for-iphone-4s.html or the Speck Pixel HD http://www.speckproducts.com/iphone-case/pixelskin-hd-for-iphone-4.html but then I figured I can get two cases for the price of one.

I hardly ever drop my phone, but I'm too paranoid to not have a case. Actually, I went naked for about a week and a half when I first got my 3GS while I was waiting for my new case to arrive. As expected, I dropped the 3GS while waiting for the case to arrive. To make it worse, I dropped it on rough asphalt. I got lucky though, the only damage it suffered was a slight scuff on the chrome bezel (which the case covered up).

From what I hear, the 4 is more slippery than the 3GS, so this time I have ordered a case in advance.

For those looking for minimal protection, check out the case I got, the iSkin Claro.

http://www.iskin.com/iphone4/claro/

The most important thing for me is that the case is a soft, rubbery one. I like rubbery cases because they provide lots of extra grip for the phone, which makes it much more difficult to drop. Because of that, I don't need to worry about it being too protected, since the chances of me dropping it are pretty slim.

I use a similar case from iSkin on my 3GS right now and I love it.
the iSkin branding just ruins the whole thing. would consider it without it. im going caseless with my white 4S. after a week I'll see where it's at and decide if I need a case.

While personally I don't use a case, I think anyone who's worried or a butterfingers should do what they need to do.

Screen protectors on the other hand are objectively bad and should be avoided. Save your money.

FWIW, the branding is almost invisible. It's embossed in to the case itself. On my 3GS, it sits right over the spot where the FCC info is, so I don't really care. If it was any bigger or more obnoxious, it would have been a dealbreaker.

same here. of course, with only a couple weeks left till I need to sell my current phone, I’ve gone back to putting it in a case because, with my luck, i’d drop and crack it about 37 seconds after getting the new one and my resale will be boned.

Hey guys, another question just popped up for me:

If I switch to iPhone, is there a way to sync my iPhone contacts with my Google contacts? That would be swell, actually. Since I don't have any iOS/Mac devices with contact information, if I could just sync it to my Google account's contacts (you know, the ones found at Google.com/contacts or on Gmail or Android, which are essentially all the same thing being synced through the cloud), I wouldn't have to manually re-enter all my contacts for a new iPhone. If this is possible, can it also work the other way, where adding a new number on iPhone will add it to my Google contacts?

Thanks, guys! Much appreciated :)

it’s all here

Yeah, I've actually been there before and read it, but I'm a little confused, to be honest. Why does it require Microsoft Exchange Server or whatever? I don't even know what that is :\

It's built into ios, just sign into your gmail account with the mail program, it'll import that stuff.
You are over-complicating thing, just sign up and bam!

I'm liking the Incase Snap. Does anyone know if it will fit the 4S? In the videos I'm watching it looks like a lot of AT&T iPhones, and if I recall correctly, the 4S looks more like the Verizon version.

EDIT: Nevermind, found the answer.

The fact that's it's $35 is sort of off-putting...

And it definitely works both ways and works well? All the little details of one individual contact (picture, addresses, emails, phone numbers) are synchronized instantly and accurately?

I'm only making sure because I'm extremely hesitant to leave Android for an iPhone, and want to make sure all my Google stuff is preserved even when I'm not using a Google phone, per se :)

it’s instant between iPhone and Google on the web. contact pictures will be carried over and everything else you mention.

if you own a Mac and used the address book app to make a change, the sync to google will not be instant but would take about 10 minutes or so to sync up.

I don't understand why people get so protective over their phones. This is the 3rd iPhone I've owned (first gen, 3GS, now the 4) and I have yet to keep a case on one. By my logic, it's a phone...and it serves a specific purpose, to be used. I don't want it bulking up in my pocket, I'd prefer to not even know it's there. The cases tend to add just enough to it, that it will be uncomfortable in my pocket, and the "rubberized" ones cause it to bring other things out of my pocket with it when I take it out.

Just my opinion...I suppose it's not important to me because I don't care about the resale value of the phone. I've ended up giving the old ones away when I upgraded.

Because the phone is worth nearly $1000??

Seriously man

I've dropped my 3GS like 20 times on all kinds of hard surfaces. Not a single scratch on the screen and very minor scuffing on the back.

If I was rich I'd feel the same way too. :)

Lots of people can't afford to buy a new iPhone every year without selling the old one. Which is why they need to keep it in as good a condition as possible.

Only reason I'm considering caseless is because I chose white this time. And dropping the phone is NOT an issue for me. I've never dropped a phone in my life. I just care about pocket scratches and laying on the table scuffs. All of which can happen easily with my black 3G. I really hope the white will allow me to save on a case.

I'm OCD when it comes to scratches and all of the iOS products I've bought have got them in some way.

Not all cases add bulk. I'm getting a clear "barely there" case.
http://www.case-mate.com/iPhone-4-4S-Cases/Case-Mate-iPhone-4-4S-Barely-There-Cases.asp

Offers protection from scratches and doesn't add bulk to the iPhone's design.

So for all of the people upgrading from a 3G or 3GS, what are you planning on doing with your old phones? People with 4s (not 4S, plural fours) can pretty easily resell for a decent value, but I can't imagine a 3G, even an unlocked one, is worth anything.

I plan on taking the SIM card out of my 3G, plugging it into an iPod speaker dock/charger, and using it as an AirPlay receiver. Much cheaper than paying for AirPlay speakers or an Airport Express and a USB speaker set. Awww yeah.

But it seems flush with the front, therefor, if you lay it flat with the screen facing down, the glass is exposed to the surface...

FINDING A CASE IS DRIVING ME NEAR CRAZY :p

I'm upgrading from a 3G.

Planned on using it as an iPod, though I'll have a 4S that will serve the same purpose.

Maybe I'll give it to my 5 year old nephew. He'd like it.

My girlfriend is upgrading from a 3GS, and while at first she was just going to keep it as a spare MP3 player, I told her to check out Gazelle, who'll pay her $143 for it. I was a bit shocked it was still worth that much to them. If she goes that route, that's half the cost of her 32GB 4S — not bad.

But I'm hearing murmurs that it won't fit the Sprint iPhone 4S. Is this true? Does anyone else have this case?

Any help is much appreciated.
I bought it last week. It will fit the Sprint iPhone just fine. The cut-out for the mute switch is big enough to accommodate both the AT&T and the Verizon iPhone 4, and the mute switch placement on the 4S is identical to that of the Verizon iPhone 4.

Finally got a rogers account reservation done. And now I have this stupid registration number and no listed release date, what the hell does that mean then?

Giving it away to a roommate as an iPod touch.

I do own a 3GS 16GB white. It looks slightly used on the backside but is fine besides that. I don't think I can make a fortune selling it so your idea seems pretty good. I might keep it as a stream device as well.

Since that dude responded that this works with iPhone 4S, this is now the one I'm leaning towards. Did it come with a screen protector?

When I got my 3GS, I sold my OG on eBay unlocked and jailbroken. I plan on doing the same with my 3GS once I get m 4S. A quick search of closed auctions shows ending prices around $200 - $300 for an unlocked, jailbroken 32GB 3GS. Like last time, I'll be including my case and other accessories (charger, screen wiper, I even have the original documentation) along with it to boost the value a bit. I'm hoping to get at least $200. That will almost totally cover the cost of my 4S.

I got offered $160 for my 3G w/ case. Girl wanted to meet at Scarborough Town Centre and I'm in Brampton. Not worth it. Wasn't too many bites for the 3G at the prices I listed it for. Started at $200 (lol) then went down to $160. Only one serious offer at $160. I'm sure at $100 it would go easily. It really isn't worth the trouble for me. Just giving my 3G to my mom. She has an LG Dare which is pretty much a piece of shit. She's super excited to get my 3G. If she wants to slip me 50 bones I wouldn't resist. lol. But not asking for anything.

I was going to sell mine, but I wasn't at all satisfied with the quotes from the various trade-in sites. And I don't want to deal with the eBay/Craigslist crowd, even though I know that if I jailbreak/unlock the phone I can easily net $250 or so.

So I think I'll just give it to my brother so we can finally play some multiplayer iOS games. "It's Ridge Racer, Riiiiiidge Racer!"

Mirroring, no, because Apple doesn't support iPhones as AirPlay receivers and there's DRM on the mirroring that hasn't been cracked.

But if you want to use an iOS device as a receiver, Jailbreak -> Cydia -> AirServer ($4.99) -> your iOS device is now an AirPlay receiver.

I have a quick question about my upgrade to the 4S. Do I need to take the SIM card from my current 3GS iPhone and put it into my 4S? Any ideas?

You need a new sim, 4s is microsim (unless yours has breakaway points) or you have the technical ability to make a sim into a microsim
