Actually going through menus had some noticeable delay at launch. This was adjusted back in the first update roughly 15 days later.

Hmm, it seems like a couple of characters in that screenshot don't have a surname. Is that new? One thing I never liked was that having a surname was mandatory, not optional.

Oh if you mean the lag and etc, that's been improved considerably.

I've never played an MMO before, but are there ways to simply pay for X months and not get billed beyond that unless you do something on your end?

I wouldn't mind trying this as it looks like they're essentially remaking the whole game in many aspects, but I do not want to be billed until I have to put a stop to it. I'd want to buy a month just to get what I want out of the game and think once that time was done if I wish to continue with the game.

Or should I just go with FFXI, which seems to be a finished product with very little updates on the way?

Have any MMOs ever come back from the dead to be decently successful? I know some have relaunched and developed a small user base, but Square looks like they are pouring a lot more time and money into this. Seems like it would be best to scrap it at this point...

At first I was like no way I'm going back. It took me 7 months to finally decide that the game wasn't worth my time any more. However, that one screenshot made XIV looked like a completely different game. So maybe I'll give it another shot (and I never give MMO second chance after I quit).

So basically they released a pre-alpha that they had been working on for five years, and have now moved into full production of the actual game, while people are paying for it.

I'm sorry but between this, XIII's hellish development, and Versus XIII's continual state of limbo, it's hard to argue against mainline Final Fantasy being the one franchise that has fallen the furthest this generation.

Wow... so much info. Unprecedented to see this much transparency from SE, let alone a FF game.

Looks awesome! Even though Yoshi-P denied that they were basically "redoing" the game, it does pretty much look like it...

If you had told me yesterday that I would get rehyped for this game, I would have laughed in your face. I can't believe it.

I'm not gonna touch this until 2.0 comes to PS3, and I'm currently thinking of reclaiming that Bootcamp partition on my Mac that I setup for this.

I'll be waiting as well.

Game has been fun as a free experience, but it doesn't attract me enough to pay for it on a monthly basis. Gratz to the devs for really turning the game around, but I'll be bowing out as soon as subscription fees commence.

but seriously, how are you going to have chest but no Thief job and no steal ja.

No mention of the Thief job that is a staple to all FF games in those pdfs. There are people that play Final Fantasy and must include a Thief in every party (for console offline games).

God dammit. I bit at launch based on hopes of FFXI HD, I stuck around to see what would improve. I finally give up and uninstall, cancel account.

And now they show me i can basically BE Kain Highwind. DAT DRAGOON ARMOR.

God dammit SE....we shall see.....

Mind blown. Everything looks amazing except for two things:

1. Paid subscription in Nov-Dec 2011? WAY too early.
2. Version 2.0 and PS3 Launch Q4 2012 - Q1 2013? WAY too late.

It's funny that I was watching a stream of XIV last night and thought about picking this up today after work since it actually looked pretty cool. I went back to XI pretty disappointed at the end of beta but have had my eye on this the whole time. No PS3 release until 2013 though :(?

Why even bother with a paid subscription at this point? Why not just wait until Version 2.0 debuts?

I guess SE is just trying to stop the hemorrhaging of money, but they really need to start seeing things from the viewpoint of their customers... Who's going to pay for what SE already admit is a incomplete game with an engine they plan on discarding when there's a complete remake coming up?

I doubt the privilege of seeing the current game world getting destroyed, as pleasing as that sounds, is enough of an incentive.

As far as console ports go... Since they are making a new engine for this and taking so long to do it, I have even more of a feeling that they won't be just limiting the game to the PS3. Though a Wii U release would put it in direct competition with DQX which they probably don't want.

I know right? I don't really get it they are going to make people pay for the game before they fix the game like they promised? Who is going to care to pay for this game before 2013 that won't be fully utilized as fixed until then.

Stupid. The game still feels like a rough beta, despite all the changes they've made in a year (hey, they finally got some decent keyboard keybinds this patch, yay!) so charging their testers a subscription fee is a complete joke.

Let me get this right, Wada is saying: "It is necessary to start charging a monthly fee for a MMO that still isn't finished to the point we're comfortable with." Meanwhile, virtually every other MMO is running away full speed from the monthly sub model and to free-to-play.

Why in god's name does this man still have a job. It makes no fucking sense.

You know, with both Minagawa and Yoshida working hard on FFXIV, and with all the effort and money and time going into remaking FFXIV into a successful product, it could well be that FFXIV 2.0 is the closest we will ever get to seeing what is essentially a FFXII MMO. I hope they actually get if off the ground eventually. I'll like to play it.
If it is just that, then I may have to buy the PC version. I've ignored the game because of the user impressions. I don't mind paying right now since you're getting a lot of content but clearly the work needed is not gonna bare fruits until next year.

Yep, if they are going through all this trouble to rework almost EVERY OTHER aspect of the game, they could have put the work in to move the game over to a "Freemium" model. If they continue to prove that they're capable of doing what people want for the game then I have no doubt that SE will be able to transform this into another venture like XI that's very stable and profitable for them in the long run. However, with a subscription-only model they'll never be able to break out of the limited player base that other similar MMOs suffer from. That's not an awful thing if that's what they're aiming for though, and at this point a success on the level of FFXI will be a huge blessing for them.

I've been wanting to jump back in and the changes thus far look awesome. I'm going to reinstall when I go home today and if I like it, I could see myself paying for at least a few months. I think I'm finally ready to throw in the towel for FFXI...Abyssea was great until the last few months where it became a convoluted time-sink yet again. I just don't have time for it and if there's no more compelling story-based content like the major expansions, now's a good time to be done with the game after so long.

I'll wait for 2.0. I played it during the beta and decided that it was not worth the effort.

I realize they've made a ton of improvements since then, but it seems to me that they won't finally catch up to everyone else until 2.0 comes out.

So how do we cancel our accounts? Because I'm not getting charged 10$+ 3 for every character slot I have for a year until they get it to a retail launch state.

Oh wow, reading the letter from Yoshida, the XIV team is much larger than anyone thought, and a segment of that team has been completely devoted to 2.0 the whole time...

if this game ends up looking like that ^ screenshot, ill eat my own hat.

And if they are insisting on people paying a monthly fee for this year long beta, then they should at least do it for like half price or something. $8 a month or whatever
