Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 plans announced (PS3 in Q1 2013, Sub Fees Return This November)

Because they wanted to emulate FFXI's stable success. FFXI is/was a huge source of stable income for them and having a second MMO to do that would allow them to continue doing what they wanted despite sales dropping over in comparison to 2 generations ago or even last generation.

Unfortunately, they had Tanaka working on XIV which basically meant they were doing minimum work and maximizing the booze and hookers.
At least someone had fun with this game, right?

Also, if anybody believes that's an actual screenshot rather than a staged scene with assets posed in a modeler with the UI photoshopped in, well, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

1.19 was a good update - there's no denying that. They fixed a tonne and added a lot of content - but is it enough to justify a full subscription? I'm glad some people will think so - but until late next year it doesn't look like it will be for me.
There already are far less people online from what I can see, only a couple of people wandering around in the town I am currently.

Agreed.

Fuck you Wada!

To any current players, how is this game solo? I have kids and a full-time job and gaming time is hard to come by, but I think the world looks cool.

I was thinking on buying FF XIV since it seemed that fees wouldn't appear until a few months later...I glad I didn't.

And LOL at 2013 until proper version of the game releases.

It's probably been said 500 times already in this thread, but turning on subscriptions even a month before this game fixing Megapatch is downright absurb.

The changes sound promising, but they are going to kill this game the day those subs go live.

How bullshit is that screenshot?

no SE.....stop it.

it's obviously a bullshoot, the lighting looks too good to be true. The UI still looks too clusterfuck to me though but i think it's unavoidable since gameplay is most likely going to be party focus.

Huh? What do you mean by that?

While it's almost certainly not an actual screenshot, it is pretty representative of all the UI elements needed in a group setting for a modern MMO. Actually it's really missing a good pull-out stripped down healing interface right on top of the boss!

If you were being really efficient (And they claim to be allowing for custom UI's in their 2.0 update) you'd probably take out the chat interface, minimap, money, and all the fluff buttons/frames that clutter everything up. The problem with that is the average person doesn't find minimalist high-functionality UI's visually appealing (They're also terrible for casual/new players who actually click on UI elements) so you end up with a lots of clutter with your information.

EDIT: Looking at it again, it's actually pretty damn stripped down for an 'official' UI in an MMO. Other than the click buttons for various menus/inventory/etc. and the chat windows there are very few unnecessary elements.

Wait if I'm reading this right, version 2.0 won't be implemented till April 2012. They are starting subscription fees in November 2011...

They want people to pay for the toke jopic that is the original FFXIV? (I understand they are adding content, but still full overhaul is needed.)

I'm guessing there will be a large drop in the population come November.

Worse. October 2012.

PS3-version 2.5 years later (if all goes well). PC fees long before 2.0. Unbelievable.

I still don't get how they could fuck this game up so bad. I mean, there's the current/last years' version of FFXI. They only needed to build on its awesomeness and also try to get a smoother release than the first time. You would think they could use FFXI as a giant beta test and use the mmorg&players knowledge they accumulated over 7 years. But nooooooo, fuck everything.

I'm interested to see the player numbers for next year after introducing the actual fees. They could have had something big, but now they need will have to try to please the core fanbase for x years to MAYBE get the steady income they are used from FFXI.

There might already be a PS4 out by then, no chance I'm buying the PS3 version if the game is not 100% compatible (and I'll will now have to wait for that to be confirmed or a PS4 version to be released).

(no gaming PC here, otherwise I would have played this year for free. Though I hardly have time for mmorpgs anyway, wanted to catch up with some of my former FFXI buddies though and play a bit with GAF...)

So they're telling people that the game will take an other year of development but they need their money right now!? Who made the announcement?? Ah..........Wada XD

Also, CoP did suck ass. Take off the rose glasses peoples. Pain in the ass, level capped bullshit filled with bullshit updates, topped with piss.

I loved CoP, the boss battles were pretty fun and it allows me do things with some of the lower level friends in my LS, not to mention we had more jobs to choose from.

But I do think it's a pain in the ass, they should've used a level sync kind of feature instead, not to mention muling gears and buying low level gears, etc.

I don't know why, but that screenshots gets my hyped. I have a weird love of walls of numbers.

So crazy that with all the stuff that's changed in the last year, even more is changing in the next year. It really is like they've completely redeveloped the game, just doing it a piece at a time.

Also crazy: Wii will now get its S-E MMO before PS3?

Why not just make this free to play permanently?
They'd prefer to make their money back.
Gez said:
Why did they feel they needed to make an MMO out of this? Why not turn the game offline with 2 to 8 player online co-op like White Knight Chronicles.
That would be something completely different. They can't just easily turn an MMO into an offline game any more than they can turn a single-player FF into an MMO.
hteng said:
ok this is confusing, why should we pay a subscription for a half finished game.
If you're paying for an MMO that isn't far from finished, it's one that's winding down.

You know, I think that screenshot is probably very close to the real thing. The graphics are really close to being that nice in the game, and I'd they're implementing a new engine (maybe elements from White), I could see the "new" game looking very close to that.

Buttons, who posted in here, has a nice blog with tons of screens that he takes of the game, and believe me, the game is still really gorgeous.

Why does SE seem to think it's smart to launch MMO's for consoles at the end of the consoles life? First dragon quest, now this...

It's not like PS3 version not hitting until 2013 was part of the plan from the start.

I bought this game last month to check it out, mostly because it was free to play. It's not worth a sub fee though. I was hoping it wouldn't be this quick.

Glad to see Yoshida has been turning the ship around but turning subscription fees back on is the worst mistake they can make at this point.

They should just transition to a free-to-play model with a store that sells vanity items. People would eat that shit up.

Agreed. I've had my account open for months but haven't been playing.

The least they could do is to give people a year teaser play to get them hooked into the new improved mechanics before charging them.

Turning the subs back on means people with free subs now will leave before they even get to try out the new stuff.

SE must be confident they can relaunch this thing.

Bad. The world is not cool. The is no sense of discovery or magic, you just enter a massive zone where everything looks the same and the only NPCs are wildlife enemies.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!

I'm sorry so many memories came flooding back in of FFXI for me ; ;

I will Day 1 it on my PS3 I've been waiting for this, for so long =]

2013 can't come soon enough

How I miss my 75RDM & 75 BLM with full dynamis gear, greatest 2.5+ years of life

I'll pay sometime within the next 2 years when they get this piece of crap sorted out.

Charging people before 2.0 is a joke.

wouldnt it be better launching this on ps4 then?

not trolling, but im sure more than 512mb ram would be best for a mmo.

I've been playing casually for a while now. The game has certainly improved but I still don't see it being subscription-worthy... not even close when you consider what other MMOs offer. Unless they release some miracle patch in the next month, November is far too soon to ask for sub fees.

I guess I'll stop playing and wait for this 2.0 and see if it's ready then.

EDIT: Also, I wish people would stop quoting pictures all the time.

This means absolutely nothing until I am playing the game and it looks exactly like that. Everything up until this point has just been promises on top of promises baked into a promise pie and served on a bed of promises, and this promise is bigger than the million other mundane promises they have yet to deliver on. I think anyone that takes "Game will totes look like this in a year for reals" at face value is just not thinking critically at all.

They're making it harder and harder to solo... And a lot of the content (however little that's in the game right now) are accessible only to parties. So I'd advise against it.

Anybody play XIV long enough to know of it has a good story like XI?

Storyline is really good thus far, I think because there is a constant specter of impending danger. Actually paying attention to quest and NPC dialog weave a pretty convincing backdrop, to me at least.

We'll have to see where it goes from here, FFXI:CoP will be tough to beat story-wise.

I'm beginning to think you haven't played since before patch 1.18.
They most certainly have delivered on a number of promises.

Being playing since day 1, and almost done with all the storyline content. I'm not quite sold on the current main story just yet, but those stories were mostly made by the old team. However the new direction towards 2.0, and all the current additions to the overall story have been quite interesting and will might turn into something great. All going into some sort of big scale attack by the Empire (Meteor) to Eorzea together with a natural (?) manifestation changing the landscape and altering the peace in the region.

The part that I like the best about the story are the class quests, some of them are rather dark and show you many things about the locals, places and society. Really looking forward to the story quests involving the new jobs, and possible follow ups to the current classes stories.

How in the world is that clusterfuck of a HUD ever going to function on a controller. It doesn't seem possible. What could the 100's of dots in the lower right corner represent?

Reallink said:

Most of it is purely informational.
Main commands are entered via action bar or central menu, which is easily controller navigable.

Most of the shown HUD elements are already in the game, they just need some gussying up.
The way i have my UI setup, I only ever touch the keyboard to speak/communicate.

Except making the game good.

Its certainly a MUCH different game than last year. They've already done a minor overhaul after the last 2 and a half patches.

I'm playing now, and even though the scheduled sub reinstatement is subject to change, I really REALLY dont think they should start charging at least until when the job patch hits.
