The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

No. In fact, I changed my .exe, I rewrote my .inis, I added mods and I use the console and I still get achievements. (As it should be)

Yes. The op config actually introduces rendering errors. Please replace it.
Ok, copy pasting that from your post so keep it hosted please :) And thank you!

It's supposed to be for Skyrim and also "fixes" some of Rage's issues, even though the official notes don't say anything that's what CatalystCreator has posted on his tweeter.

I'm downloading right now and I also would like BF3 fixes/performance.
Ok good, will add to the OP!

From Catalyst Creator Twitter - "Still working on Skyrim CAP - definitely aiming to get it released ASAP - upcoming performance driver will include other updates as well"

So its not in todays CAP.

With the settings I posted above transparency AA works but there are no rendering errors regarding transparency (fire, spell effects, the Kahjiit heads etc)

So why would it happen to me and a few others earlier in the thread? I don't get that, because I want to have transparency multisampling.

If I just enable 2xSSAA would that be better anyways (albeit more of a performance hit)?

I've had 2 people confirm it so give it a shot. A few posts back or in the fixes section in the OP.

Nothing specific for Skyrim? Seems pretty basic.

Is there a console command for worldfov? I cant tell a difference unless I see it change.

Are you sure you don't have any of the other AA forcing settings enabled? And that you selected the correct AA compatibility bits?

The CAPs say 11.11 11/15/2011
Yep, they included an older CAP in 11.11, supposedly the newer CAP that's aimed for Skyrim will be coming out later.

I had everything default for compatibility bits, and the AA compat to Fallout: NV (whatever number that was), when I tried it. I also had nothing else forced or anything. I am at work now so I can't tell whether or not I had everything the same as you.

I haven't seen any other one's than the one you already know, sorry.

If you've done the console command, try reverting back to the original FOV(via console) and then adding the entry fDefaultWorldFOV=85 (or your own preference) to your ini.

I have the following specs:

Intel core I7 950 3.0
4 GB of RAM
ATI 5850

I am about to start the game for the first time, should I go Vanilla to start with or which tweaks should I use?

Probably fooling myself but I think there's a performance increase in Skyrim with those 11.11 drivers, maybe I'm talking shit but I'm in Solitude with about 40 - 50 fps, before it was 30-40 fps.

I've always liked ATi cards, but they are really trying my patience lately. It took them several tries to get BF3 right (and even so, I'm not positive their drivers aren't causing that crash bug), and Skyrim? These are two of the biggest, if not THE biggest PC games of the year, and they don't have full driver support ready to roll? Do they not have a clue as to what the people who buy their GPUs are looking for? These are not $40, bargain barrel cards. People spend real money on this shit, and nVidia has been on the ball with BF3 and Skyrim over and above ATi. I will keep this in mind when I'm in the market for an upgrade.

I'm seeing a little boost in performance from the 11.11 update.

In Whiterun, I'd be down into the teens when I'd look at a light source, around 25 FPS going around town. 60FPS when outside of town exploring. Now I'm looking at mid 30's for the most part, unless I'm looking at a light source, which goes to mid 20's now.

Running an AMD Asus 5850 BTW, 2.5Ghz Quad, 4 gigs of RAM.

There is supposed to be some improvements as noted by a few on the Guru3d forums but I can't find any official documentation yet stating such.

Did you try the RP settings in the OP? Curious to see more try it. And can you OC that CPU more? Also, try the memory tweak in the OP too.

I'm not trying to derail this thread, but I just want to point out that I'm in complete agreement here. When I did my last build, all I kept hearing about was how great AMD cards are. I finally went w/ one, and I have had nothing but issues with driver support from day 1. Skyrim has been out since Friday, and we are just now getting a patch release, that apparently doesn't include the full patch for the game?

Can more folks test these out

fDefaultWorldFOV=XX (ex.fDefaultWorldFOV=85)
fDefault1stPersonFOV=XX.XXXX (ex.fDefault1stPersonFOV=85.0000)

Would like to see more confirmations of it working.

11.11 release notes arent working for me. Do single card users get any Skyrim benefit from 11.11? I dont see it anywhere on his twitter either.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but there's a very neat and simple way of adding items to your inventory that doesn't involve searching websites for the item ID.

Just type in the console:

help <search term> 0

The '0' is simply a parameter that tells it not to filter the search results.

So, if you're looking for armour, you could try something like:

help armor 0

... and it'd list all the corresponding item IDs in the console. Then you just do the usual player.additem <item ID> <quantity> and it's done. This should work for things like weather types (use the 'fw' command) and idle animations (player.playidle), though I can't get the latter to work yet.

Which section of the .ini should that be in?

I just did the new driver install, and a quick run around on my lunch break, but I will try to add in the tweaks in the OP, and see if it makes a difference.

Any mods for weapon sets? When I have a bow I can just equip/unequip and it brings back up my two swords but I cant do the same with healing. It just replaces my swords and I have to go to the menu to reequip the two swords.

Is there anyway I could just do weapon sets ala Guild Wars?

Is it possible to disable the compass on the top of the screen with a hotkey? I want to take screenshots every once in a while but dont want to keep going into settings and turn HUD opacity down.

Here's another neat trick, this time for when you've thoroughly exhausted any hope of playing the game properly (which I'd like to stress I haven't).

Each of these commands spawns a QA chest at the player's location that includes every item in the game:

placeatme 00039FB8 (All Courier Items)
placeatme 000C2CDC (All Miscellaneous Items)
placeatme 000C2CD6 (All Standard Armour)
placeatme 000C2CD7 (All Enchanted Armour)
placeatme 000C2CD8 (All Clothing and Jewelry)
placeatme 000C2CDF (All Enchanted Weapons)
placeatme 000C2CE0 (All Standard Weapons)

That is very tempting but I want to do it right and not take the fun out :P

This isnt the first time this year either, Crysis 2 was an absolute nightmare at launch for crossfire users. It was over a month before a real CAP was released that worked. I have had crossfire and SLI and I dont think I will be doing crossfire again, I might not do AMD again at all.

Once I again I'm getting nothing from these. Just tried out the 11.11's
Pretty much same system as you. 6870, 2.5ghz quad.

Straight inside Whiteruns main door. 22fps. Hasnt changed with anything I've done. Adjusting shadows is the only thing that gives me a bit. Even going from 0xMSAA to 8xMSAA does nothing.

I'm guessing something in my system is completely locking my system into a certain performance. Like a bottleneck I guess.

So since I can't get 60fps on Ultra all the time I've been playing with the game capped to 30fps.

But I got adventurous today and started playing around to see what exactly I'd have to do to get it locked to 60fps... and wtf... I literally cannot get a solid 60fps at the top of Dragonreach looking down into Whiterun. Even on the lowest possible settings I can only get 50fps... :/

I've got a decent setup too:

i7 920 @ 3.5GHz
6GB RAM @ 1333MHz
7200RPM Western Digital Caviar Black HDD
ATi 5870 w/ 1GB VRAM

What the heck?

The Skyrim.ini, under [Display].

As far as I can tell, you don't need anything in SkyrimPrefs.ini, or the Steam launch options, or the console.

It's still working for me! I can't believe it... hasn't reset itself... *touches wood*

Thanks, added it, I'll report on what happens.

Has someone already posted a good ini to use on AMD Radeon boards? Specifically 5850 or above? I think the settings I'm using added some artifacts in the shadows.

Bethesda Working on Big Ol' Skyrim Patch, But No Timetable

There’s probably an argument to be made that we cut Bethesda Game Studios a little too much slack about the issues that plague the launch of every one of its products, but the games are just so damn good, so...we overlook it.

This is why I’ve put 25 hours into Skyrim and don’t seem to care about a fairly serious texture issue!

That said, Bethesda has publicly admitted there are plenty of kinks to work out. Pete Hines, the company’s VP of marketing and public relations, told his Twitter followers that a patch is coming.

“We are continuing to work on an update for all platforms to address issues any bugs and [performance] issues we can,” he said. “We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don't know if it will fix ‘your’ bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”

At the moment, there is “no word yet on when it’s coming out,” but as the company is still actively monitoring submissions from the community, it’s possible your issue could still be flagged and included in an upcoming patch.

If you were expecting that patch in the next 24 hours, however, that may prove too optimistic.

So is the PC version the best version to get. I've finally decided to pick this up, but I thought I heard somewhere that the 360 was the lead platform. I'm probably wrong, but is there any reason why I should hesitate picking up the PC version vs. the 360 version?

Has anyone discovered a console code that allows you to bank levels? What I mean, is I want to be able to train 5 times every level but by the time I get enough gold to train I've already leveled another 1 or 2 times.

And when you go to level up, it's all or nothing since you can't do one level at a time and back out.

Works for me fine Liquid. I've jumped in and out of the game a lot too. Made sure I confirmed it was fov 85 as well each time I went back in.

PC version is the best in every regard, more options for graphics and controls. I believe it was developed for console primarily though.

I really don't know why you would consider the console version if you have a capable PC. It just boggles my mind that there is even a question. Unless you really, really like achievements or trophies, there is no reason to get the console version.

LiquidMetal14,

I downloaded RadeonPro and configured it using the settings listed in the OP with the new 11.11 drivers released. Coupled together, I did see a big improvement in my FPS while in town, averaging mid 30's, rather than the low 20's I was seeing before.

Besides RadeonPro was there anything else worth configuring for my system? It defaults to high, and as of now, it looks great, and plays much better.

I think almost any rig suffers in performance there. There needs to be some performance improvements in particular cells before stuff like this goes away. The best suggest is probably to keep shadows on high rather than ultra.

I've been aggressive with the LOD and particles to increase long-range detail (mountain snow, tree LOD2 quality, etc) and my FPS is still 60 or near 60 at all times, even on two 580s, so maybe it'll work on one?

No crashes, no performance issues, no ugrids, no mods beyond blood and faces, and no trickery :) Shadow distance is set to 8000 to avoid shadow pop, but you may prefer increased detail so just reduce the figure.
I have noticed the 8000 shadow distance - how can you stand the pixelated shadows?
