"I need a New PC!" 2011 Thread of reading the OP. Seriously. [Part 2]

I get that, but that was also the argument used to convince me an E8400 ("hardly any games support more than two cores! When they do, it won't be a problem") was the better choice than whatever Quad core intel CPU was the hot shit at the time. Within a year I was wishing I had gone with a Quad.

All irrelevant right now as I'm ordering some paste and praying that fixes the problem.

True, but right now at least, going to a 6-core CPU would cost more than double for the CPU-motherboard combination...the $400-500 saved could easily be used to buy something faster 2 years down the line.

I like my HTPC's somewhat larger, but the Silverstone LC17 works wonders. With a quiet PSU and a large, but quiet Scythe, it works wonders. Room for 3 to 4 case fans, which means that you can either go for onboard gpu, or buy a small passively cooled one (GT210 is what I have).

I have an LC17. Big but very simple - all front mounted USB etc are behind a flush panel, and the DVD drive has an aluminium cover to make it flush too.

I have a couple of 92mm quiet fans in the front, and one 120mm I think at the rear, along with the PSU and a couple of fans on the CPU cooler. All quiet fans running slow.

Its in the spare room, but I'd happily have it in the lounge in terms of aesthetics and noise

Also why I didn't want to think about replacing my CPU and mobo just yet :P

Despite pining lustfully for GTAIV PC, I'm also the kind of guy who will eek out use from his components for a long time. The E8400 suits me just fine in 80% of cases, so I can deal. I mean, I have an ati 4850 and I don't think I'll need to even begin thinking about replacing that for a good few more years yet either, seeing as I can get a combination of high and highest in most games on the 720p HDTV I use. In my mind, these days there is no reason why a rig should not have as long a lifespan as a console generation.

If I had to get a replacement today, it'd be an i5 most likely. If the thermal paste doesn't fix the problem, it is what I'll be doing.

But with that comes the need for a new OEM copy of Windows... and if I'm not mistaken I'll need to replace my ddr2 ram with some of the ddr3 variety, right?... this is not a cheap proposition.

Kind of a random question, but does anyone here have a Razer Naga Epic? I got one yesterday and unless I'm crazy ever since I've installed it, when I put my PC to sleep mode, it instantly wakes up no matter what I do. It's really frustrating. If anyone has one that could give me some advice I'd appreciate it.

Edit: Actually it's random but most of the times it will instantly wake up.

Edit 2: I just completely unplugged the wireless dock from the PC and it still did it... WTF is going on here!

Edit 3: I think it's this Rocketfish bluetooth adapter I bought for Dolphin emulation. After unplugging it it, my PC has successfully gone to sleep twice in a row.

So, I insatlled another side fan, that helped the temps...is it ok now?

Yikes. I seem to have to worst luck :<.

Windows started reporting sometime last night that my harddrive was failing and that it would be best to backup my data before the next time I see the prompt again. I'm not quite what sure led to this, as the HDD has been working fine for years (though I know drive failure can just happen overnight). I defragged the harddrive and then scanned for errors using HDDTune but it didn't find anything. Oddly enough, the HEALTH tab does not display anything. That is - it's just blank. Only the first benchmark tab and the last error tab actually display anything.

Any other programs you guys would recommend me running? SeaTools seems like a good option, and I've read that Windows has it's own harddrive recovery/repair program as well. Reading up on the flood issue, seems that prices will be stagnant for more or less half a year, so I'm hoping it doesn't come down to hdd death D:

tl;dr - Windows reporting HDD failure, any other programs aside from HDDtune you recommend to run? HDD Tune does not display anything under the HEALTH tab.

That's weird...

So, I installed my replacement motherboard. On my last motherboard, I was running my HDDs in AHCI mode, but if I try it on this motherboard, it blue screens during loading. Works in IDE though. I guess that means I need a fresh Windows installation. :(

What does this error look like/tell you to do if anything?

Just be sure it's not a virus that's telling you there's a problem when everything seems fine (I almost got tricked by this one myself).

Sounds like you installed Windows in IDE mode. You can get around that with a quick registry fix.

Yeah, that does sound like a virus. My dad and some people where he works got fooled by that and gave it to me, Malwarebytes in safemode took care of it.

For 100% load those temps look great to me. What were they at before the fan was added?

Check the "max temps"...the "normal prime" temps were basically around the max temps you see there. So the difference is between 5 to 8 celsius. I don't know why they go up and down when the load is constant 100%...don't ask me. I took a pic from an "average" temp situation.

Your volts are just right.

That graph makes me cry :(
I had to push mine up to 1.30 Vcore to get stable 4.3Ghz; seems like I should only need about 1.22. Maybe I'm doing something wrong... My temperatures are pretty much the same, though, and I'm just using my case's stock fan and a Hyper 212 Plus.

Depends entirely on the CPU and motherboard. My current motherboard needs 1.4V for 3.6GHz, while my old one only needed 1.36V. Weird, I know.

Right now I have an Athlon II quad core processor and two 5770's crossfired.

What card would give me a decent upgrade? Basically, what single card would give me better performance than my current set up.

Also, would it make more sense to just upgrade my processor before my gpu?

You are on borrowed time with that proc if you demand high performance.

As far as picking a card goes, take your pick from any of the $200+ cards out there right now, or wait a few months for the next gen of AMD cards. 7870 is looking to be quite the card.
Should of said between $200-300
Corsair Force GT. It's the only super-high performance SSD I'd recommend right now. Make sure you have the newest firmware on it before installing an OS though.

I'm looking to put together a PC in the Enthusiast range from the OP spreadsheet - my only additional requirement is that I want it to work on my Plasma TV and tie into my Yamaha receiver so I don't have to sit at the desk to use it. Is there anything else I should add to the configurations?

Only if you have a drive that is being limited by SATA2. I'll admit, I don't notice a huge difference in regular OS usage between my Vertex II rig and the Corsair Force GT in this system.

Just make sure that the videocard you're picking has an HDMI out. Might google your final choice to make sure it plays nice with receivers/TV's.

Hey PC GAF i really need some help.

I got a new PC about 2 months ago, it was custom built but i didnt build it was the store where i got it from, Anyway.

I think i want to re-install my OS and start fresh again. Will it degrade my Performance of my PC if i do?
Whats the pros of doing this because nothing is wrong but i lend my PC to a friend for Uni for lots of rendering/animation, and when i got it back my folders where messed up and and that.

Can someone give me a guide or tell me how to do it.
Im not fussed as i dont have much on there besides a few games, do i have to uninstall them first?

But the only major worry is Installing my Video card drivers again, is it that hard? do i just need to put CD in and it will just install itself??

Anyway i think thats it for now, help will be appreciated.

All PCs run better after being formatted. A lot of junk accumulates over time. I format my hard drive once every 6 months.

Formatting is simple. Put in your OS disc, reboot your computer, and go into it like you're installing it outside of Windows. It'll give you the option to format it there. It shouldn't be hard to find.

You don't have to uninstall anything. Backup anything you want to save obviously, but nothing has to be formally uninstalled. When you format, the hard drive will be completely clean.

If you have an ATI or Nvidia card, download your video drivers from their web site. The drivers on your disc are likely outdated.

I prefer to get a perfect sstable setup with all essential apps installed and create a clone to a HDD or backup .img file of my whole OS drive.

Run all browsers in a sandbox, good reg or system tool cleaner + manual deletion of registry garbage from uninstalled progs if you know what you're doing.
HDD crashes or something causes instability no biggy, only thing have to do is plug in the clone or back it up from an image and update AV database and drivers etc.

All my 'keep on system games' are preinstalled, everything configured how I like, no need to reinstall all my games including steam games and all apps etc....

Hey thanks, sorry for being pedantic is formatting reinstalling your OS and with games i can just download again off my stream account and install off my disk again?

Just ordered my first mechanical keyboard. Ordered it from WASD Keyboards. Just got it plain, black, with the modern layout and blank Windows key. I got MX Brown switches, and I added the 40A switch dampeners to the order for an extra $23. The dampeners soften the impact of the keys, making the keyboard quieter and more comfortable to type with.

Hopefully I like it!

Here's a video showing the difference in between the switch type sounds with and without the switch dampeners:

Can you give a review when you get it. I'm seriously about to get one but still a little undecided.

If a TV is 1920x1080 natively, do I need to look at anything else to make sure it will match up correctly for a PC display or am I good?

i think you may need to adjust overscan in your pc display drivers and turn off all sharpening and processing by your tv

I'd say to add +0.03V to that graph for 'average' OCs. It does vary a lot though.

Kirby, what is your setup and idle temps? The new Intel chips have awful idle sensors for temps.

Does anyone else on here have a GA z68 xp ud3 and 2500k? Im trying to figure out if my overclock is just bad or what. I had it running at 1.35 for about 3 months with maybe 2 bluescreens over the 3 months, and then it killed itself and decided that it would make me reset the CMOS. I have since changed it to 1.38 and it seems stable (no bsod so far). but I feel like that vcore is a little high, anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Use IntelBurnTest 20 times in a row, then Prime95 that shit for at least 8+ hours to test the overclock. Don't just 'guess.'

So I'm looking to replace my aging Dell 24" LCD (I think it was the original 24" model). What would be a new nice 24"? I do a good amount of gaming, but never bleeding edge, I'm using about a year old GTX 460 Fermi. I would like to get a pair for a dual monitor setup.

Thoughts? Do I need a GPU upgrade also?

Are there any self contained water cooling solutions for GPU's out there in the vein of the H-series from Corsair? I recently put a Zalman GF1000 on my 6870 and while it cools the card nicely and is MUCH quieter than the stock cooler, it's still the loudest thing in my case bar none when on performance mode. I feel like I'm so close to realizing an almost silent computer...

whenever i put my second gpu in my third sli my pc freeze ( i have 2xgtx570 both of them work fine when its alone).
i need to do more tests and hope its not something with my psu (thermaltake 1200w) :/

anybody know of a good place to check out the black friday or cyber monday deals? Do we even know what they are yet? I am dying to buy my equipment but dont want to miss out on good deals.

I don't think its the PSU. It could be the second PCI slot. Try a single card in that slot. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling your video card drivers, then attach the second card and reinstall the drivers.
