The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Some extra comparisons, it really looks like vanilla (no saturation) but does the 'night' a bit better IMO

Himmelsrand Custom Shader Suite

- Adjusts the colors in Skyrim for more contrast and saturation to remove the washed out look. You will need FXAA Injector installed.

Character Graphics Mods
No More Blocky Faces
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30

-This mod removes those annoying compression artifacts that makes noses and the such look blocky on characters. Definitely install this. Make sure you install this BEFORE you install Detailed Faces.

Detailed Faces
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26

- This mod significantly increases the texture resolution on the faces. Definitely get this.

High Quality Eyes
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=498

- This mod increases the texture resolution of the eyes, making them look better.

Detailed Lips
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=689

- Increases the details on characters' lips.

Better Bodies
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=256

- This mod significantly improves the skin resolution on the bodies of characters.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shields, Armors, Clothes Retextures

A higher quality of shields - New textures
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=225

- This mod significantly upgrades the texture quality of some of the shields in the game.

- This mod upgrades some of the armors in the game. Get this.

Clothes Improvement
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=113

- This mod upgrades some of the clothes in the game. Download this as well.

Ebony Tweaks

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

City Retextures

HD Furniture
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=238

- Improves the look of furniture of "Breezehome" in Whiterun.

Skyrim 2k
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=607

- A project to upgrade the textures in Skyrim. Haven't tried it out yet, but it looks like a project to watch.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Landscape Retextures/Atmospheric Effects
Better Landscape Textures
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=679

- I haven't tried this one out yet, but I like where it's going. The only thing I don't like is the snow so far. You can see a tiling effect with it. This is definitely one to keep a look-out on.

Snow HQ
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=743

- This snow looks a nice deal better than the snow in the pack above, so if you install the above file, make sure you install this AFTERWARDS so that this is the snow texture used.

Enhanced Night Skyrim
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=85

- Improves the stars with a much higher resolution texture.

Realistic Smoke and Embers
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=836

- Improves the smoke and ember effects in the game.

Better Water
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=711

- I've yet to try this one, but the water looks amazing from the videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOmQd...eo&playnext=11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-Tb9...eo&playnext=10

Vurt's Skyrim Flora Overhal
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=141

- Use this to significantly improve the resolution of some of the trees in the game. This is definitely one to look out for. Vurt's work on the flora of Morrowind was significant. Here is an example of his Morrowind work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQC9ZiQlA-I. Keep in mind Morrowind was released in 2002. Here is a stock Morrowind for comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peY7s2fN18Y&feature=related.

Nicer Snowflakes
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=296

- This is one to watch for. It looks a bit unrealistic at the moment with the snowflakes being too defined, but I'm sure as the mod progresses, it will be much better.

Enhanced Galaxies
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=565

- Improves the look of the galaxy cluster in the game.

The Dragon Moons
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=367

- Improves the resolution of the moons in the game.

Trees LOD with Shadows
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=194

- Enables shadowing on trees in the distance.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Misc.

Better Blood Splatters
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=727

- Improves the look of blood in the game.

Delicious Skyrim
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=315

- A mod that attempts to update the texture on the food items in the game.

High Quality Food and Ingredients
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=280

- Another retexture of the food and other items in the game. Right now, this seems to be the better one, although they are not texturing the same items at the moment.

- Removes the compression artifacts from torches.

Ruins Door Remap
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=408

Skyrim Sunglare
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=116

- Improves the sun glare in the game a nice bit.

Readable Roadsigns
http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=387

- Makes the road signs more readable.

Are there any HD 4850 users who are using the Skyrim Better Performance mod? I went through the 600 comments at the site and only 3 ppl mentioned the 4850 specifically. One guy said it was a big improvement while the other 2 said they lost performance. I can get high settings at 1080p already, so I'm not dying to mess my game up with a broken mod which is why I'm asking around first on this one.

Will there ever be any mod-packs or compilations or something, where you only need to install a pack instead of 90 million individual mods for eyebrows, lips, and wrinkled sphincters?

real talk, the realistic fire mod is one of the biggest differences yet. jesus, it looks amazing. seriously stunning in motion.

Just you wait till the Creation Kit is released.

Minds will be blown. Hours will be wasted.

Think about this: As of now, 11/20, 9 days after release, I have (already) 163MB of high-res textures/stuff in my game folder.

When the Creation Kit releases, I expect that to bloom to a solid 2-3 GB within 4-6 weeks of release. Cannot fucking wait.

Fuck, not just the graphics. Imagine all the missions, areas and houses etc. I'm not joking when I say I won't be buying any game for many many months. Gaming bliss.

How do you guys keep track of what mods you've installed and how to uninstall them, say if a better mod comes along?

Use the Nexus Mod Manager at skyrim nexus. You put all of your mods in the same folder and just double click them in Nexus Mod Manager to enable or disable them.

Default shader.

I know, image quality sucks (I used Steam) but it still looks jaw dropping.

Not sure if the better shaders made a difference but with them, the enhanced sky at night seriously made my jaw drop. It was so unbelievably beautiful. The twinkling stars... it was... WOOWOWWWW.

My comp can barely run Skyrim in Med setting, with the mods I will need new PC -.-

Sounds good. Thanks for the other suggestions as well.
Just make a list in word or notepad or whatever (with the URLs).

It's easy for the most part anyway. They're all (mostly) in the Data folder and u can just spot what you don't want using file names. I'm using my above post with recommended mods as a bookmark.

i just bookmark the page of each mod so that i can go back and find the instructions if needed.
I did that with Oblivion at first but it gets really cumbersome when you have tons of mods, particularly the manual uninstalling. For Skyrim, I'm trying to use the mod manager exclusively from the start, so that I can check for updates and uninstall automatically.
