The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Ian Patterson (of script extender fame) confirmed that the "new" .exe is just the same as the old one, plus encryption. So you're not missing out on anything by reverting.

Hopefully this works... opened steam up, it downloaded the file. I took that file and backed it up in case I ever needed it. Then I had a backup of the old .exe and the old .exe with LAA, used the old one, patched it for LAA, opened up, ran the game... didn't prompt to download anything. I am guessing I did it right?

HOLY SHITE, DON'T INSTALL THESE DRIVERS

WTF, I just tested them out and I'm getting 5FPS, literally between 4-6fps...I better be able to go back.

EDIT: Oh no, I reinstalled my old drivers and it didn't help. WTF!!!

Damn, and here I was ready to link them. Did you DL the right ones? x64?

Ummmmm, upon checking the version number, that 11.a is seemingly older than the one in the OP I have that I know works. If I were you, I would get the one in the OP after doing a driver sweep in safe mode.

And the term "Patch 2" came from the official forums so sorry about that as it's clear by now that it's not really patch pre se. Sorting that out and some LAA help in the OP now.

OR

READ - (8.93) is an early cat 11.12 - I would highly recommend you get the ones in the OP.

With the old exe + LAA, played about 15/20 minutes, fast traveled and waited like a madman, ran around killing everything, entered random dungeons and shit.. no CTD whatsoever.
I'm not saying it fixed it, might i've been lucky, but still an improvement!
Oh well, thanks guys, let's hope it keeps up when i'll actually play it.

BTW i have the 11.11 drivers, downloaded them today, and they kinda fixed my costant stuttering/fps drop problem, actually (although again: might have been something else).

I have the drivers in the op, when I went to install the 11.11a it showed the display driver as already up to date. So if you have the one in the op already don't bother with the 11.11a.

I think it may have been the one that you posted, i'm now having massive issues with my external display...How do I do the driver sweeper?

Are you sure? Why did you quote the 11.a drivers? Either way, driver sweeper while in safe mode (google search or look up at earlier posts on this very page), remove all AMD drivers, then install new driver in regular windows.

So we're clear, the driver in the OP has been tested by other gaffers and tons of other beth and Guru3d members and has been confirmed to work. The 11.11a driver has several reports of CF not working amongst other things. Either way, the link in the OP is stating for now as I can attest to those myself.

Yeah sorry, I immediately thought it was the 11.a drivers, but I also installed the other CCC update as well, it must be that.

I would strongly urge the one in the OP after a driver sweep. You may have a lot of clutter you don't know about from old installs if you haven't been doing it he "safe" way. Get either drivers but I would highly recommend the ones in the OP.

Might want to put this in the OP for recovering your pre-assfucked exe.

Disable automatic updating for Skyrim.

Note: This assumes that you have Windows 7 with System Protection enabled on the drive where Skyrim was installed.

1 Navigate to the Skyrim folder (\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim)
2 Right-Click the Skyrim folder and choose Properties
3 Click the Previous Versions tab
4 Find version of the folder from before today, highlight it and click Open
5 Copy the TESV.exe file and paste it into your game directory

You should then back it up in case it gets overwritten again.

I have an edit already in place but not applied. Will use your wording though, thank you.

I'm getting a lot of crashes. I used to get an occasional crash after fast traveling, but at least it autosaves beforehand. Just now I crashed right in the middle of a conversation.

WHO TESTS THIS STUFF?

Not sure what to think there, same guy who did the awesome Skyrim UI concept image did one in the vein of OS X...

At the risk of sounding like a huge jerk, I don't understand why this guy keeps making and releasing these mock ups. I mean its basically something anyone who has ever seen a website or excel spreadsheet could come up with, and while he may have some artistic talent he doesn't seem and hasn't claimed to have any of the necessary programming background or intentions to make something like this come to fruition anyway.

I think the idea is to "inspire" the community modders to create something in this vein, but I don't think that's going to happen until the Creation Kit is available and I highly doubt they are in any need of inspiration, they have probably been waiting desperately for the Kit since Day 1 just so they can fix things like this.

"Come on, people. CrossfireX support for Skyrim is a joke. We need to get this sorted out and have something ready before next week."

Disables CrossFireX (to resolve negative scaling and image quality issues seen when CrossFireX is enabled)

"Problem solved."

getting a lot of crashes today... any thing changed recently? whats all the LAA stuff?

Yeah, my game crashed as well all the time today, and now I can't start it at all. Failcode 51. WTF is this shit? I want to play the game I payed for. Ran like a charm before the update and I haven't touched anything since then.

Oh god, why did I mess with stuff... Windows isn't detecting my iMac screen as a monitor now, only the TV, plus the TV is stuck at 800x600. FML.

I always use driver sweeper when I try beta or hotfix drivers. It's easy. Uninstall your current AMD drivers and restart into Safe Mode. Use Driver Sweeper and remove the AMD leftovers. Restart normally, install the new drivers and you should be all set. If you still have trouble with the current beta drivers, just use driver sweeper and revert back to an older set that worked for you.

I think they are acting as inspiration for now, but I also agree that going all out like that without the intention of compiling them fully seems like a waste. I personally don't like the look of his Apple inspired one. I hope someone is able to implement something as solid as his first mock up.

I just can't wait for the CKit to come out and see what people do!

So pissed about this i dont know how to express it with words..

Just tried the new drivers, using drivers default = 34 fps with tons of stuttering in Whiterun

Forcing MVPU Alternate Frame Rendering in Radeon Pro = 50fps without stuttering, gg AMD :(

btw: using 2 * 6950 2 GB @ 5760 * 1200

Fuck this is making me not want to play tonight. I haven't had a single crash in around 18 hours or so. In fact I haven't had a single issue other than the shadows being ugly as hell.

Hmm..
Try it again and copy paste exactly into skyrim.ini
Code:
[MapMenu]
sMapCloudNIF=0
fMapLookMouseSpeed=3.5000
fMapWorldMaxHeight=150000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=8000.0000
bWorldMapNoSkyDepthBlur=1
fWorldMapDepthBlurScale=0
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.3700
fMapWorldMaxPitch=360.0000
fMapWorldMinPitch=0.0000
fMapWorldYawRange=3600.0000

nope still ... I guess my game updated.. I played for about 3 hours... didn't really see a difference. 56 hours and still 0 crashes. I don't have the LAA patch.

I get failcode 51 too. Glad I'm sort of done of the game short term. Just wanted to check out some mods.

Ah, it's because it doesn't like LAA. Some zealous DRM bullshit perhaps. Take that pirates...with autoupdating hacked steam clients!

Yes it should work.

I love your mods, you might want to take a look at the fireplace in your whiterun home though. Funny things were happening there, gonna have to disable your smoke and embers mod for now.

There's a chance it's something on my end, but i disabled it and it went away so just wanted to let you know about it.

Hmm I just took a look and didn't see anything weird. You mind taking a screenshot for me?

Has anyone noticed that when walking through an area with light sources, the light source suddenly dims as you approach?

I don't know if this has always been that way but I didn't notice it until tonight and I'm not sure of any settings I may have changed recently that would have affected it. It's distracting enough to bother me now.

Edit: And it will remain dim even if you back away.

My last post is part of my new addition to the uGrids tutorial on how to recover a pre patch exe. It includes a link to it.

And thanks to all who tried to help me with the quote thing. It was too easy but my mind was broke at the time.

I have had issues with textures not loading properly after installing mods. But it's not the mods that aren't loading properly but the default ones like armour and sometimes ground textures. They show up bright pink. I'm certain they're not mods because I have no armour mods but I do have water, sky, and the faces/eyes. Could they be interfering with the default textures in the game? I'm re-adding them one by one to see if I can spot when it starts to happen.

The more detailed faces mod seems to go wrong sometimes. Faces become strangely coloured and have all detail removed. Annoying.
