The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Yah, but this one is an actual mod. The others are just mockups.

TweakGuides is working on one, so I'd keep an eye there. He's hoping to have it up sometime tomorrow I think.

Of course, and not to say that the mockup has to be the one to be made, and I'm sure the more complex stuff will make it in. I'm going to check this out, and the icons really do fit the style. Add some more information on the screen, fix the layout, add sorting and he's all set.

Having kind of a crazy bug here, not sure if a mod fucked it up (I only have improved faces/eyes/body textures and the water mod, though) but if anyone could pinpoint what's causing this, I'd be super grateful.

About 50 hours in and still loving it. I really like that every dungeon feels different, unlike Oblivion where they all got a bit samey after a while.

I wish roads (even just the major ones) were marked on the map. Some of them you can kinda see, but most are just guesswork. It just doesn't feel right to wander aimlessly through marshland trying to find the road leading to a large town...

Apparently Bethsoft put blank slates of most of Tamriel into Skyrim.

Morrowind isn’t the only province that has been made in Skyrim. As far as I know the majority of them are there. I’ve only been able to get access to Morrowind, and Cyrodiil since my game loads them slowly, and I don’t have the patience.

Just past the mountains of Morrowind, you’ll find the Cyrodiil landmass. As well as White Gold tower, located in the middle of the Imperial City.

I came. If they're not doing expansions, then this will be EPIC for modders.

Anyone know of a mod that will put all of the items in a chest or drawer into different categories like they are in your inventory?

I want to just put all of my extra stuff I don't want to sell into one storage place like I did in Fallout 3 and not have to scroll down a giant alphabetical list to find what I'm looking for. This seems like an oversight to me since it was in Fallout 3.

I agree that map is balls, but my solution is to set my marker on wherever I want to go and use clairvoyancy to point me there. The spell usually uses roads when they area available.

Is anyone else having issues launching Skyrim? Steam just sits there giving me the "Preparing to launch..." dialog box and nothing happens.

A lot of people reporting the same issue in the Steam thread with multiple games. You could go into offline mode, should work there.

...Tamriel awesomeness...

And this is why I named my character Nerevar. Come on modders, take me home...

That is so awesome!

I find it hard to believe that they would go to the effort to putting the land mass down if it wasn't there to be used in DLC expansions. Sure the modding community would get the job done too.

That's my first assumption. It's like they know the mod community will have a feel day there.

Eh, it was the same thing with Oblivion, almost half the landmass was beyond the borders seems like part of the way they design their world, not actually indicative of future content.

Oblivion's extra land didn't match up with the maps, though, I don't think. "Skyrim" in Oblivion was just randomly generated white hills.

Yup.

I wound up having to uninstall/re-install Steam. (deleting the blob did not help.)

Make sure to move your steamapps folder first if you decide to take that route. Also, after having done so, and re-launching Skyrim, it reset my settings, so make sure you backup your ini file if you've done any changes to it.

Are there any mods that allow the game to run better (FPS-wise)? When I started the game it ran easily over 40 fps. After playing 25+ hours the fps has slowly decreased to 25 fps, give or take a few frames. Is this a widespread issue? Or am I the only one experiencing this?

So...man I don't know how I missed this.

If I enable shadows on trees, the trees don't sway. Turn it off...trees sway and it is FAR more impressive. How do you 100% get both to work. I looked it up and it looks like this impacts a large number of people, but some not at all.

I love this game.... Like all elder scrolls games I have to test the artificial boundaries of the map. So I go out west of windhelm to see how far I can go...

After pausing for a jaw dropping sunset I reach a small ice covered island past the sunken ship. to which I find a flag and a skeleton and what is obviously his failed attempt at extracting some treasure.... Love the random stuff I find in this game! Even when I think I'm going beyond what the developers intended for me to visit.

I apologize if this has been covered before, but there's something weird about the way this game runs on my PC (i7, 5850, 8 gb ram), and the same was true of Fallout 3.

FRAPS will tell me that the framerate is 60 (especially indoors), but when I move the camera around it doesn't seem smooth at all. In fact, it kind of gives me a headache over time. It's not outright stuttering like when you get actual frame drops, but it definitely does not feel like a smooth 60 fps, either.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Might it have something to do with my use of D3d Overrider?

I should note that I'm using a TV, not a PC monitor to play this game. However, most of the things I play either a) run fine or, at the very least, b) exhibit a match between the FRAPS-reported framerate and my subject experience of what's happening on the screen (e.g., when it seems choppy, the framerate goes down, and vice versa).

Sounds like micro-stuttering.

2 shots I took of the other leaf pattern. I got close to show the upped detail/rendering of the petals themselves. The stock leaves are not close to the detail of these and there is no performance hit.

I got of an fps bit but only because I changed my AA to 8xEQ AdaptiveMSAA

And a couple of tips for those using RadeonPro, try disabling Aero while the game is playing to save some resources. Also enable high priority CPU mode for the game.

so I just downloaded that mod... do I put all the folders in my textures folder in the data folder...

Anyone know how to get the 4GB Skyrim executable to work with Radeon Pro? Ive tried messing with the Launcher options in RP and creating a new profile for skyrim4gb.exe, but it doesn't seem to be working.

This Set Timescale to XX command is the best thing ever, the day/night cycle is now an actual 24 hours cause I set it to 1.

It also means that the shadows aren't doing there crazy movement every 7 seconds, this is the best thing ever :)

No experience with Radeon Pro, but the EXE that actually gets run is called "TESV.exe.4gb"

I don't think they'll be doing whole areas of Tamriel, that's just too big for DLC/expansion pack. My guess is that they made the map so that for expansion content (say, similar to Tribunal for Morrowind - took place in the city of Mournhold, which is in the Morrowind mainland) they'll be able to show it on the map of Tamriel (I can't be the only one that thought this made the FO3/FNV DLC stuff feel a bit disjointed, when you were always 'traveling away').

Maybe even do an extension of that zoom thing they so like, Google Earth style; zoom away from Skyrim, into a view that shows the whole of Tamriel, then zoom back right into whatever location they have for DLC. They could do sections of Black Marsh or Elsweyr, for example: everyone knows those aren't market-friendly enough to be a main location for a new TES game, anyway. :P

hmmmm.... I have to actually browse to an executable file to create a profile or mess with triggers/launcher settings, so specifying the above exe anywhere isn't possible.

I actually love that idea. I'm intrigued by locations like the black marshes but don't want a full on game about them....DLC would be a perfect avenue to explore them.

if I can't have a full game about Black Marshes I'll take DLC at least. The best setting in Tamriel.

For whatever reason, Steam was doing its best to ignore my "do not automatically update" selection and I responded by setting my exe to "read only." Steam now says I have completed 124 downloads, all of which are for Skyrim. :P

Man, Im so jealous of people who have a good enough PC to run Skyrim.
I bought my current PC back in 2006 specifically for Oblivion and I'll bet the future Skyrim mods will be even more amazing than the Oblivion ones were.

I had to disable cloud syncing. It kept giving a cloud sync error. "Not able to sync, did you play from a new PC?"

Also, noticed Steam set it back to "Always keep this game up to date". Disabled that, and set my TESV.exe to read-only.

Liquid, could you add this console command to the OP, this will change the day/night cycle and more importantly, the flickering of the moving shadows will be non-existant if set to 1 (which will be 24hrs in-game = 24hrs of playtime).

Set Timescale to XX (Replace XX with number, use 1 for 24hour cycle)

Interesting. Dxtory's frame limiting only seems to extend loading dramatically if you're using a large-address-aware EXE. That explains why I wasn't having any trouble when I first started playing. I thought that was weird.

It auto-detects high for me and I have the same card.

Just wanted to say that, after the LAA fix, my brother played for hours (i wasn't there, but must have been at least 4 or 5) with not one CTD.
So yeah, very good news, that is.
Though the framerate drop issue is still there and annoying. :\
