Very noobish question, but is there a way of playing through all the class stories without starting up a new character? Not a deal breaker, i'd just like to see all the story. Using a new character would feel like wasted time simehow in an MMO.

And is no one doing a PvE euro guild? I'm not sure about PvP. Griefing...griefs me.

You have to actually play the character to go through the story, so I guess no is the answer to your question.

You got to play to get the story bits, it isn't just some cutscenes once in a while, but story segments throughout the entire experience. It will take a person forever to play through all the stories. One could probably youtube or read up summaries of the story basics for all the classes after launch.

Couldn't you team up with buddies and see their stories? Whenever I went into a 'story area' it always reminds me that only one per class can go in there. So if I were another class, couldn't I go in there and see my buddies stories?

You have to change something in the social menu to allow that...I never found it because my game was in french and was explained how in english...I can`t get the game to download from the launcher now,I came close a few times but the site froze at those security questions.

You can change that in preferences. It's a checkbox.

Sooo, clicking on "Contact Information" link in my account management swaps the loged in account to some guy named Michael from San Jose with a fun username of "crazycrackarulz".

This normal?

I'm gonna go ahead and guess NO

I'm getting the same kind of nonsense right now....their site is messing up really bad...I just logged out for now and stopped trying...

Are you guys that where in the last weekend able to download the game for the next weekend yet from that launcher?

I still have no idea when I can play. I got two different beta weekend emails on the same account, but it won't allow me to play and I've yet to get an email or any indication when I can actually play this time.

The last beta weekend I did was so simple. This seems like they're purposely making it a PITA.

Yes.

Well the last weekend there were 10's of thousands invited. This weekend everyone who ever signed up got invited and all the sites giving away keys so 100's of thousands of people is gonna cause a little bit of a slowdown.

Well actually yes, they said this was mainly going to be a big stress test this weekend. They opened the flood gates and really going to punish the servers and their systems. Why some of us were saying that we were gonna skip this weekend, knowing it was going to be chaos.

Outside of beta, is there going to be any way for me to try this game before buying it? I have been dying for a new, quality MMO for months, but I'm not buying two copies (for my wife and I) without at least being able to try it.

We both got into the stress test this weekend, but I don't think that's going to be a good way to judge the game at all. I expect massive problems that otherwise won't be there on launch, hopefully.

If you preorder a physical copy you get an early access code. It will give you a week or two of access. You can then of course return the physical copy of the game if you decide it isn't a fit for you.

Thanks, so the early access is only for physical copies? I can't get it if I preorder a downloadable copy....?

dowloading 12 gig's :| but I'm in the beta :D

My first mmo ever so very exited and scared to play this game.
Not really sure what to expect.

any help would be appreciated :).

Early access is for every preorder, be it physical or digital. You just can't return a digital copy, hence my suggesting a physical one.

Early access is 5 days only, and they let people in in waves. It's first come first serve by when you registered your preorder code. Those who register now are likely going to get put into the last day of early start and not a full 5 days

When I spoke with someone at EA, they told me that after early access I will have a good 1-2 weeks before I had to enter in my retail code and during that time I can continue to play.

He may only get one day of early access, but at the very least he will get another week or so to play going by what they've told me.

I'm probably not going to have my retail copy until a week into release, and I'm expecting to be able to play it until I enter in my key based upon what they've told me.

MMOs have been pretty easy to get into after WoW.

If you can play regular RPGs, or even adventure games, this will be about the same.

i just went to GS and reserved it but there was no code or anything on the reciept, do i have to go back and get a physical card with a code or something?

Well finally got in, setup 5 answers to security questions and finally downloading beta for weekend which I will probably get to play for 4 hours after getting in Sunday. Woo

I ordered a physical copy from amazon and they immediately emailed an early access code. So I'm guessing gamestop should have given you one when you bought it.

I doubt it works that way. EA reps really are not very good at this type of stuff

About your avatar, I love Denholm Reynholm.

GSstores are out of codes. Trufax.

Give it to me straight GAF: how big is the client, file size wise? My hard drive is cramped for space and I'm desperately clearing out some breathing room for it.

Mike Fahey of Kotaku has a little recap of a bounty hunter playthrough

Through the use of cinematic cut scenes and BioWare's signature dialog system I was introduced to my crew, a group of well-intentioned support staff on the planet Hutta, looking for a Bounty Hunter with the potential to win a competition called The Great Hunt, catapulting them into fame and fortune. I was their best and brightest hope of realizing this goal. Not one of many, mind you, but the brightest.

That was a worry of mine during my initial forays into the world of The Old Republic. Every class has a single story that all members of the class share. Every Bounty Hunter on the server was experiencing the same story I was, joining up with the same companion character, and facing the same choices I was facing as I advanced through my initial batch of quests. For some reason I thought this would cheapen the experience, but it reality it heightened it. I liken it to Kotaku's Game Club, only instead of playing separately and coming together after the fact, we were all playing the game at once, spontaneously sharing our thoughts and reactions.

That strong feeling of story focus even remained when I grouped with other players to take on some of the start area's more challenging group missions; it was as if I was playing the optional co-operative multiplayer mode of a single-player game.

"Boo" "Hiss" Kotaku, but I like Mike Fahey.

My folder is just over 38 gb, but I was in last weekend and downloaded the patch for the next weekend.

Yay! I got a key for the beta this weekend. I'm excited to see how this game compares to WoW and if the storytelling will live up to the Bioware standard.

I've applied to the GAF guild, can someone accept my invite?

Activision Blizzard downgrades stock due to Old Republic concerns

World of WarCraft has been perched high atop the massively-multiplayer throne for seven years now, but is about to get its first serious dose of competition when the Electronic Arts-published Star Wars: The Old Republic launches. While it's not really a shock to learn that some folks have already indicated that they'll be leaving Azeroth for a galaxy far, far away, a new survey indicates that World of WarCraft could shed anywhere between 900,000 and 1.6M players when the lightsabers start swinging.

According to Develop, a survey of nearly 400 online World of WarCraft customers indicated about 50% of them planned to purchase The Old Republic. In light of those results, Lazard Capital Markets downgraded Activision Blizzard's stock from 'buy' to 'neutral.'

However, it's worth noting that the very same survey indicated that 33% of WoW players said they'd re-subscribe to the game upon the release of the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion. People love pandas.

The stock rating downgrade also follows the news that World of WarCraft's subscriber base is down about 800,000 users in recent months, as well as news that majority shareholder Vivendi "shed thirty million of its shares in Activision Blizzard, reducing its stake to 60 per cent," last week.

All this aside, World of WarCraft still has more than 10 million current subscribers.

Interesting article.

That's also a very impressive amount of pre-orders for a MMO that isn't titled Warcraft.
