I had an aversion to auto-brightness but I decided to give it a go and it's really practical. How it works is super old news but after I understood that you have to set the slider to the minimum brightness you feel comfortable with it's been smooth, and better than setting it manually all the time I go outside.

Wow that's crazy.

That's android-like (lol)

No, but really, I can get about 10 hours of use before I have to charge it again and my brightness setting is at about 90% with most of my location services on.
Same here, I usually get 1 hour per 10% of battery with normal use, online, etc, unless I'm playing something battery-drain crazy like Shadowgun or Infinity Blade. I'd say 7-8 hours of heavy use is the minimum acceptable.

Ok. A little update on my battery drama's.

usage:

- Usage: 1 hour, 22 minutes

- Stand-By: 11 hours, 43 minutes.

And 80% battery remaining. Oh, and to give you an idea: I have played a tower defense game for about 5 minutes, sent 1 text message, and sent and received about 15 WhatsApp messages. I have the idea that it's still draining unusually fast. Or could I be heading towards a more normal battery usage with these statistics?

Also, I really hope Apple fixes this. What's the point of having a beautiful iPhone, but having to switch everything like WiFy, Push notifications, Location Services and Fetch stuff off?

Edit: I may come across as a whiner, but I'm in doubt here. I paid good money for this phone, and I can have it replaced within 8 days (now 4 remaining) if it's 'broken' or not working correctly.

The fuck? That is excellent!

I had about 25h standby and 7h usage on my last charge.

mine feels worse than my 2 year old 3GS. 5.0.1 didn't do shit for me, if anything, made it worse.
will wait for 5.0.2 if that still doesn't do anything... I don't know, I honestly don't know what I'll do.

Ok, thanks for your opinion buddy. So you are still having some battery trouble, I presume? Tried everything like resetting to factory presets, full draining, clean wipe and install again etc. etc?

No, I am completely satisfied with my batterylife now, I have location services and lots of notifications activated and my usage is a lot of webbrowsing which generally sucks a bit of energy.

I think your notion regarding batterylife on smartphones is a bit strange. If you get a lot of usage PLUS 24h standby out of a smartphone there is nothing wrong in my opinion. You shouldn't compare smartphones to non-smartphones in this matter.

No, I interpreted your post the wrong way. I see now that my question was a bit strange indeed. Hmm, you sound pretty positive. Maybe you're right. ;)

Yeah I really don't understand cellphone cases. The only excuse I won't roll my eyes at is people who want to make sure the resale value is as high as possible. But even then..

I once was like you, but then my months-old 4 slid off of my lap on to the cement below.

Well it seems either the crackling/static noise some 4S handsets exhibit when on 3G (data or calls) and/or having a yellowish screen is sufficient cause for getting it exchanged.

Sent it in to a service center with those two issues and apparently I'm getting a new unit.

I really shouldn't be surprised, but given how Apple hasn't acknowledged either issue I was a bit worried.

I'm thinking of switching to Verizon and getting an iPhone. Does the wireless hotspot work well? I use it currently on my Desire. With Verizon you have to pay for that functionality right? Does jail-breaking allow you to use it without paying a monthly fee? I'm not sure I really want to go thru the hassle of not being able to update because of being jailbroken. Is anyone doing this?

Tested my phone out yesterday using it for everything I normally do with my laptop and I managed 21 hours standby and 9 hours usage. That's until auto shutdown. Today it's doing just as well, with 68% left and the day almost over. I had to sacrifice some fetching abilities, but nothing necessary at all.

I do more reading and writing than watching videos so this should be classified as moderate usage.

hey guys, I just bought my gf the iLuv ArtStation dock cuz it was an amazon lightning deal. It didn't say it was compatible for iphone 4s but do any 4S users have problems with their old docks? or do they work just fine?

Just bought my Sprint iPhone 4S White 16GB. This will be my first Apple product. My previous phones have been WM6.5, Blackberry, webOS, Android and WP7 and figured I should give the iPhone a chance. I've been migrating from carrier to carrier over the last 2 months and finally wound up back with Sprint.

I bought an Otterbox Defender case since the iPhone feels too small by itself. I've always had bulky phones and it was odd to have such a small phone.

So far . . . eh . . . I'm sure once I start exploring the Marketplace I'll start like the device more. I just have a nagging feeling I'm going to miss the openness that webOS/Android offered me.

Probably a dumb question, but does Jailbreaking an iPhone void the warranty/Applecare?

Out of curiosity, if you actually used any feature that required an open-ended platform, why did you switch to the iPhone?

Also really? An Otterbox? Because the phone feels too small? I feel like some people live in an alternate universe.

Seriously though: They won't service a jailbroken phone, but if you factory restore they'll never know.

Any dock for the 4 will work for the 4S, in that respect they are exactly the same. The only difference is that shifted mute switch.

Asked this in the iOS 5 thread, but will post here as well.

My wife has a 4S and has been using a PC since she got it. She just got a new MacBook Pro and it is saying she has to erase the phone with the new computer. We did a backup on the MacBook and restored the phone from it, but it says she still needs to erase the phone for a new sync. What do we do?

Erase it then restore from backup on the Mac.

You could also just upload everything to iCloud now and never use iTunes again.

I think she has it synced to iCloud, but she is worried about losing the save data in her games.

I also just realized that she signed into her old iTunes account on her new MacBook, when the iTunes on the PC and the iPhone was MY iTunes account.

So signing into my account, doing a backup, erase, then restore from backup and we should be fine?

I'm not sure. The account switching complicates it.

If she has backed up everything she has on her iPhone to iCloud (including turning on backup in iCloud settings and turning off iTunes backup in iTunes), then restoring from iCloud will restore everything exactly as it was.

yes, Apple says jailbreaking an iPhone voids their warranty. However, if you restore the phone back to factory settings they'll be none the wiser. Or sometimes they know all but are still nice about it; I have a friend who took his iPhone to an Apple store, because of a physical defect, who was told to return later after the jailbreak was removed—which he did within an hour to get the phone exchanged with no further hassles.

Thank you. After I did the backup, I selected to delete everything and THEN it prompted to transfer everything to her new computer. It worked perfectly at that point.

Now the wife is happy with her early christmas present from herself (iPhone 4s) and the early christmas present from me (MacBook Pro). And I am relieved. Thanks.

So.. AppStore and download iTether. It is Tethering for your phone on your desktop or laptop via USB. They claim they worked with Apple and Apple questioned them a lot but approved it. I think they found a loophole in which the phone verifies itself via browser so that may be a reason why it got through.. Who knows?

Either way.. $15 and tethering.

my battery went from full to 79% while I was sleeping, with alleged 4 hours of use. I am calling Apple right now because this shit is whack.

or, you know, I might be sleep-phoning, but I doubt it.

Source? Their website is down...

Their website is down because so many people have bought the app in the past few hrs. Macrumors and 9to5Mac are running stories on it now.

It has gone to #1 grossing App on the App Store right now and is already in the top 25 in sales.

This is where they mentioned it. They are posting updates on their Facebook/Twitter on servers being down and trying to get them up.

I got my Tether through and it worked very well. Verizon is pretty slow where I live.. Only like 1.5mb/s down but I was still able to stream on Twitch.tv and Justin.tv (Watch streams that is) without lag at 360p video quality settings.

Apple Rep told me that 5.0.2 is coming this week and if that doesn't fix my battery they'll send me a new iPhone 4S free of charge. That's sort-of good news.

Now, we wait.

The 5.1 beta is out for developers. They seem to be skipping 5.0.2, atleast in the dev program which means that one is probably only for fixing the remaining battery issues.

Buy it while you can. It won't be there long :)

I think my battery problems have been solved after completely having it drained sunday evening and fully recharging it again! Woohoo! I even have 'Location Services' turned on. So, thanks for tip GAF.

Usage: 5 hours, 36 minutes

Standby: 1 day, 7 hours

Nice!

I think I will buy my mother an iPhone 4S for Christmas, but which screen protection fits it? It needs to cover the back and the front, so it needs to be cut out for the bigger camera lense. Is there a nice handbag for the iPhone 4S? I plan to put it in there as well, so she can open it and be surprised that there's a phone in there. =)

Don't buy a screen protector. It's gorilla glass. If it breaks, it was meant to happen, a sheet of thin plastic isn't gonna help.

Well, I asked for a screen protector. I don't ask if I should buy it or not. She will get a screen protector and a cover for it, as she will drop it for sure. I have screen protector on my iPhone 4 and it helps, but no case.

Again, I asked for screen protectors and a handbag, thanks. =)

PS: And it's not Gorilla Glass.

I thought it was recently confirmed in Jobs' biography that it was? Or did I dream that up?

you did not dream that. it is gorilla glass.

you're a good son. your mother will appreciate you when the tiny plastic film will hold the shards of glass falling out of the phone once she inevitably drops it.

Yeah, it is Gorilla Glass and it was confirmed in the biography.

Oh wow, well I were uninformed on that, I'm only at Chapter 3 in the Biography. My apologise for the false information, then it is Gorilla Glass, is that only on iPhone 4Sl? So I can actually try and drop it down on the floor and it will not break? Because Gorilla Glass can deal with the impact so the glass won't break, and that's surely not the case with iPhone 4.

I just wanted to be sure, that it will not get scratches in her pocket and bag with coins and keys, and that it won't break when she drops it. Cause she drops her phones a lot, because she is in a hurry a lot.

All iPhones have had Gorilla Glass.

Gorilla Glass is mentioned by name in chapter 36, it was used since the very original iPhone. Steve Jobs told the guy to make as much as humanly possible and they converted an entire factory to do nothing but make the glass for six months straight. After the first iPhone shipped Steve sent the guy a letter saying "We couldn't do it without you".

I would definitely recommend getting a case if you know she drops it frequently. Better to be safe than sorry.

Oh wow, so the back is Gorilla as well. I just don't understand why the iPhone 4s breaks, Gorilla Glass were supposed to withstand those drops. =/

Yea, I'll buy the Speck case, which I bought for my sister as well. I would like a nice handbag for it as well.

I was home sick today and used my phone for maybe 20 minutes tops. End of the day at 25%.

It's fucked.

Out of curiosity, if you actually used any feature that required an open-ended platform, why did you switch to the iPhone?
Because the iPhone is the only smartphone device I haven't owned. I've been staying away from the iPhone because I know Apple doesn't embrace customized the software which I've been doing since my old Touch Pro. Still, I thought I should at least try the iPhone before I completely write it off. Also, I don't tend to keep phones for the full contract so I may still give this phone to my brother if something else catches my eye.
Also really? An Otterbox? Because the phone feels too small? I feel like some people live in an alternate universe.
I'm not a fan of small phones, but the Otterbox makes it about the right size plus gives the phone a nice grip.

I'm not going to jailbreak right away since I want to see how the iPhone is, but it's good to know that I can jailbreak without too much worry.

There's a new tether app in the store that costs $15. It requires software running on the laptop and USB (no wifi) but it works

need some quick help here, buying an iLuv ArtStation speaker dock for my gf she has an iPhone 4s, does anyone have this or a similar dock and does it work for the iphone 4s?

most of the product descriptions on these things don't say, i figured this is cuz the iphone 4s just came out.

There's no publicly available jailbreak for the iPhone 4S (and the iPad2) right now... Whenever one is available I'd suggest you jailbreak right away as you never know when the loophole will be closed by Apple.
