Whoa Heist. That is sick. I thought I was doing a great job, but your battery seems much better!

After my last charge, my numbers were like this:

Usage:

- Usage: 6 hours, 52 minutes

- Standby: 22 hours, 20 minutes.

But my battery was all empty! And you still have 66% left? That is amazing.

Edit: I see now that you have installed 5.1 beta. When will this be available for the regular iPhone users?

don't really now, but i think in the next couple days. Because it is a very very solid Beta.
Only a .plist problem in it, thats all.

so far:
Usage: 5h, 58 minutes
Standby: 1day, 7 hours.

so good. I'm impressed.

Okay, so obviously I know the phone has to work harder in low signal areas. My office is in a crappy Sprint area, and my phone gets extremely hot to the touch as it plows through the battery. Is it normal for the iPhone to get so hot when in an area like that? My old evo battery was crappy at the office, too, but that was kind of par for the course. Thanks!

4S owners: It's apparent there's an issue with the way some games recognise the Retina screen on the 4S when compared to the 4. First instance I ran into this was with Chu Chu Rocket (which STILL hasn't been fixed) and now Time Crisis 2nd Strike, as per this exchange with their support:

PLATFORM: ios
NAME: Shane
GAME: Time Crisis 2nd Strike
GAME_VERSION: 1.4.0 (most recent)
DEVICE: iPhone
MODEL: 4S
SIZE: 32
IOS_VERSION: 5.0
LOADING_METHOD: App Store on Device
DESCRIPTION:
Game does not seem to detect that the 4S has a Retina screen. I have had this issue with another non-Namco game and suspect the way that the game detects the screen is incorrect, causing it to display the graphics intended for older screens like the one on the 3GS.
Hello Shane,

Thank you for contacting Namco Bandai Games America Inc. Customer Support.

Unfortunately, only a few of our games support Retina display and Time Crisis is not one of them. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Hi, thanks for the response!

However, I purchased Time Crisis 2nd Strike after double-checking that
it had Retina support based on this change log:

What's new in Version 1.1.0
+ ELECTRIFIED Graphics!: Retina display support and more detailed
textures for iPhone 4 and new iPod touch!
+ BEAUTIFICATION!: iOS 4 Anti-aliasing on iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen. iPod touch!
+ DIFFICULTY TUNING: Time limits eased for EASY difficulty level in
response to player reviews. Note: TIME CRISIS involves no stealth -
there's no time to spare - to prevent catastrophe (GAME OVER), you
need to be aggressive!

From what I can tell, there seems to be no issue with Retina graphics
on the regular iPhone 4, but the 4S is definitely displaying the
graphics intended for 3GS and below.
Hello Shane,

You are correct. We apologize for the confusion. We have verified this issue and have passed this information off to the development team for this game. We will follow up with you as soon as we have more information. Again, we apologize for the confusion.

So there ya go, just keep that in mind. I'd wager that there are tons more games that have the same problem, too.

Noticing some more strange behavior. I just got a picture message. The phone was sitting in front of me. The screen turned on, the photo popped up, it played the first two tones in the "tritone" ringtone. Then the screen just instantly shut off. So I grab it, unlock it and it plays the final tone of the ring tone followed by about 6 keyboard click sounds.

People earlier were saying this is indicative of my hardware being faulty and not just software weirdness. Has anyone had this happen before?

After going through four different cases - the Switch Easy Vulcan and NUDE, a CaseMate Gelli and a Griffin Reveal - I'm happy to report that I've finally found the perfect case, the Elago Breathe S4. It has a nice, slightly-rubberized feel that doesn't slide on surfaces, a raised 1mm edge to protect the glass in case it get's placed face-down, the perforated back looks like steel mesh, and a minimal profile. It's beautiful. It's honestly the best case I've ever used (Droid or otherwise).

It does look nice. Too bad that logo near the bottom ruins it. It's really unfortunate that companies feel the need to brand their cases like this. It's a big factor for why I still don't have a case.

seems weird.

do you have an apple store nearby? seriously. just make a quick appointment one day and ask. maybe you get a replacement or maybe they know more about the weirdness you’re seeing.

the keystroke example you just gave is definitely not common

Yeah I guess I'll make an appt for tomorrow. It's just so busy though, I was at the mall a few days ago buying elder scrolls and there was a literal army of red tshirted apple employees standing outside the store. It was so crowded they couldn't even stand inside the store.

In need of a case recommendation:

I want something that looks simple, and is easily removable, as it's something I'll really only use when I leave the house. Non-hard (soft?) cases are preferable.

This. I refuse to buy a case that has a huge logo in plain visible sight.

Your phone has a big logo in plain visible sight!

To each their own - normally I'd agree, but I think it looks looks good on this particular case.

Can anyone help me out with a little question please?

Yesterday the App store app showed a little red badge with the number 1 in it. However, it didn't go away until I updated a certain app, which needed an update. Is this normal? Like, you HAVE to update that app, or else it won't go away? That can be annoying!

you can also delete the app!

you're gonna see the same badge on the settings icon when system updates become available.

you can only remove badges on third party app icons via the notification settings

yeah i went from 3gs to 4s yesterday and its a huge difference. much more responsive, screen is amazing, speaker is better, camera is actually p awesome.

etc etc.

Oh man. Your body and mind will not be prepared for the colossal difference in usability. Enjoy!

Nice to hear. I have a 3GS and will be upgrading to a 4S soon. Really tired of the shitty camera and degrading performance plus some parts of the phone no longer work correctly like the volume switch on the side (it constantly switches from silent to not silent when I try to turn it off). I'm currently waiting for Verizon to have some available stock so I can purchase and port my phone and my wife's and cancel my current plan with AT&T.

I was offered one at work but they wont let me port my number. I considered porting to Google voice as a workaround but and I don't want to deal with having to use the Google voice app every time I make a call so my number shows up correctly on caller IDs. It would also be a hassle and not save me that much money since I'm currently on a family plan with my wife.

Goddamnit. Just when I thought my battery was starting to become 'OK', all of a sudden the battery is draining from 100% to 75% in 5 hours. And I haven't even done anything, but make a 2 minute phone call! This is so frustrating. I don't know what to do. Thinking about having it replaced :(

If that's all you're doing get a dumb phone for $1.

I don't roll with cases, but in your case, you did good. NFI what you're doing with it, since I'm always fiddling with it while biking and skating, too.

Really stupid things. Like reaching out to push a door open with the phone in hand and somehow dropping it, or sitting in my car with the phone on my lap, then getting out of my car and watching it fall =\

How much, and does it obscure the camera/headphones etc? Nice looking case.

It doesn't obscure the camera because the cut is big enough and concaves inward, and the top has a cutout for the headphones, you can plug in and out with ease. This could be a good or a bad thing.

I've also heard good things about the LifeProof case too, and I really like the fact that it waterproofs the phone.

If you think it needs it, take care of it. It'll be pretty straightforward. Back up/sync your phone, go to apple.com/retail and find the closest store and make an appt. they'll probably have you in and out pretty quickly.

I am not sure if this is the perfect thread for this but I am sure some of you have been through this.

I want to switch from T-mobile to Verizon and get 2 Iphones, I have 2 lines on T-mobile one is under contract the other is not. Do I just tell Verizon this? Do I need to contact T-mobile and cancel my contract before hand?

thanks.

Loved my 3GS. Just got a 4S at work I didn't ask for (not complaining!) I heard Sword and Sorcery is amazing, any other iPhone 4S only things I should do/try besides camera, coming from a longtime 3GS user?

I have the same exact question but with another carrier. I also have two lines. One is under contract and the other is not. Do I tell Verizon I want to switch and then pay the ETF to them or to my old carrier?

Yes this is exactly my question, thank you.

Infinity Blade is a must, as is Real Racing 2. Scribblenauts Remix is another of my favorites on my 4s.

iPhone battery life issues may continue to vex users—even post iOS 5.1
ArsTechnica said:
Apple recently acknowledged that some iPhone 4S users aren't getting the battery life they should and released an iOS update intended to fix those problems. However, the effectiveness of the fix appears to vary widely, with some Ars readers reporting improvements while others claim battery life got worse. Apple released the first beta of iOS 5.1 to developers on Monday, which is expected to include additional battery life fixes, but early reports suggest it offers no reprieve from the problem.

We spoke to a couple analysts to try and understand what might be the root cause of the problem, and why Apple has had such a hard time fixing it. It turns out, the answer isn't very simple because smartphones aren't simple devices.

As smartphones take on more and more useful features, how we use than can have a major effect on battery life. "I'm not seeing an issue myself," Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg told Ars, "except there are more features I use on a regular basis which do affect battery life. As with all devices, what features you use extensively will affect battery life."

ABI Research mobile device expert Michael Morgan agrees with that assessment. "iOS 5 may simply be using more data transmission or running more background processes to support its new features," he told Ars. "There is also some potential impact of iCloud services."

For instance, we have noted slightly decreased battery life on our iPhone 4 since upgrading to iOS 5, as Notification Center has made receiving push notifications from dozens of apps more manageable. However, you can turn off any noncritical notifications to boost battery life a bit. Some users have reported that turning off Siri's "raise to talk" feature, changing how often your device checks for new data, or reducing the number of services that sync data to your device can also positively affect battery life.

But such tweaks can only go so far. "Any undefined glitch is a massive problem to solve for such a complex system," Morgan explained. "iOS 5.0.1 supposedly fixed the problem for some users, but made it worse for others."

That echoes what we have heard from our own readers, who said in an informal poll that battery life stayed the same, got a little better, or improved significantly after the update. A few even suggested that it got worse, though 40 percent said that battery life hasn't been a problem for them at all.

Morgan told Ars that software, and not hardware, is the most likely culprit, and that additional software tweaks may solve the problem for those that still are affected. "We tore down the 4S and tested some of the major components, including the new A5 processor," Morgan said. "Nothing that we tested was significantly different from the iPhone 4, and power draw was right where we expected it to be."

Tweaking iOS 5 and its power management software is the likely fix, but with so many areas of the operating system to examine, it may take Apple more time to iron out the problem that it had originally intended. Perhaps as iOS 5.1 undergoes testing, additional fixes will be added. However, the company did not respond to our questions about its efforts to further address the problem.

I just went 7 hours of use and 22 hours of standby before having to charge my 4S (it was at 4% battery life).

So yeah, I can't relate to the battery complaints at all.

4-5 hours of use only on a 4S, same as my wife with her 4. Really fucking annoying. This is with mostly everything off (notifications, bluetooth, location services etc).

I don't know what to do.
