The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Then I don't know, I think I did everything right :\ Though I just played half an hour without a crash, it might have been just a bad area or bad luck...and the comparisons on that page make me remember how unsightly the plains area is on 5 grids :x

Someone posted a screenshot yesterday saying that the NVIDIA AO made water invisible in their game. Well I think I'm at the exact same location as in their shot, and everything's hunky doory, and I even tested using all three quality modes of the Skyrim AO bit.

This is on Performance:

tesv2011-11-2914-38-4c9otb.png

No missing water, and the AO still looks great even with the fog in shot.

Has anyone had an issue where the game starts off smooth but if you play for too long the framerate becomes progressively worse?

Any fixes?

Try taking all of your older save games out of the default folder. Just a hunch :)

Haha exact shot I took some pages back. The water was invisible WITHOUT AO. I posted that too but it's fine now I think.

It's sporadic and but I've also notices slightly more texture pop in after about the 25 hour mark. Crashes have been minimal but I've had about 6 hard freezes the entire time. CTD's are not really an issue right now. I am back to getting stuttering down to 30fps and 1-2 second freezes while cycling through my saves to load. I don't know what the hell but even the menu is sporadic *sigh*

Ah! My bad.

In my opinion, AO is easily the single-best tweak. Like that NVIDIA article said, it enhances just about every frame of the game, whereas the other tweaks and mods only touch certain elements. If I were struggling for performance I'd definitely turn other things down/off before removing AO because the game just looks so horrible without it (once you've tried AO you won't want to go back, knowing how the game can look.

I do love the look of most of it but it doesn't gel well with certain effects. If I could keep it on without the big frame rate hit I would.

Yea it makes a world of difference.

How well do you have it running? What about the crappy misty areas?

High Quality mode is no problem on my setup, and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary with fog - got a screenshot of your problem?

What's your rig? Mind sharing a screenshot and your ini files? You don't have to if you have like sli 580 because I won't be able to handle it haha. I have a single 580.

Br, check the GeForce guide in the OP.

Edit: im out right now but I'll post one after I come home

Sorry, I wasn't clear before. I didn't mean in the overall playtime, I meant in a single session.

After a few hours of play, maybe even less the framerate get's awful. If I quit and restart the game is smooth again.

Do me a favor will ya mate, if you ever find yourself having the time that is, load up the game somewhere and turn off sli and compare the results between 1 and 2 cards.

Would appreciate it.

Yikes.

That's mad haha. I'll try turn down shadows and other things to get quality AO working nicely. Do you have v sync on? Triple buffering?

I had to leave V-Sync on, the physics go crazy when you're pushing over 250 frames per second (every single object in my Whiterun house started flying around the room).

I think the game would work as well on 2 cards using my setup of mods, tweaks and AO, but I seriously doubt it'd be OK with just the 1.

Are there any mods out there that do a better job at structuring the quest system layout? Id really like to see the miscellaneous quests broken down by region or city, and the guilded quests in their own section. It doesn't make any sense to mix my petty robbery quests in with the main storyline stuff, it doesn't belong there.

So people know, that NVIDIA guide is right on top of the tweaks section. Hard to miss.

I put it there so people wouldn't miss it and it's been there since.

Anyone else try the Improved Flame and Water mods?

They honestly make a world of difference.

Is the improved flame one listed as better embers or something like that. Would you mind posting the links to the better water and better flame mods that everyone keeps mentioning. the search on skyrim nexus isn't working so well.

isoku's sun glare mod has a different url now: http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1653

They're in the second post on the first page.

I could really use this sort of mod right now.

My hypothesis is that it will work just as well, so it would be great if you could somehow try it out :), just curios though not really going to affect me that much.

So, I have an i5 750 2.66 GHz CPU. If this game is only using 2 cores and is using one of those cores much more than another, is it possible the CTDs I am getting are a result of bottlenecking at the CPU as it struggles to process all that "high" requires?

Have any AMD users here braved the new newer drivers? Some seem to be happy with them.

Mod questions:

I'm not having a great deal of fun despite thinking much of Skyrim represents an improvement over Oblivion. I think it is because I am fast traveling everywhere, and anytime I have to step outside I'm only thinking "please don't let there be dragon #236 out here" instead of exploring and enjoying the world.

Are there any mods that:

1: Greatly reduce the number of random dragon encounters?
2: Speed up horses and/or leave them exempt from stamina burnout?

Thanks. :)

How many dragons have you run into? I think I've killed a little over 30 in 120 + hours.

There's a great horse mod that increases speed by 1.5 x. It's a must.

STAY away from those beta drivers a couple posts up. They do nothing more than 11.11a or 11.11b do. I would highly suggest going 11.11b.

I had no issues with them but others did so I have to recommend the best WHQL driver and the best Skyrim AMD driver right now is 11.11b.

What's the performance hit of 8xMSAA/8xSSTrAA on a GTX 470? Would it be better to just go for FXAA instead? On that note, why is FXAA so negatively perceived here? Based on that article posted a few pages back, it seems to have a bigger effect than 8xMSAA and transparency AA as well as reducing shader aliasing.

I take it you don't have the shout from the MQ that
forces dragons to land?
With that shout, dragons are never again an "annoyance," they are always fun and fast.

Mainly because it takes a blurry shit on textures. But it's a good solution if you're struggling for performance.

Oddly enough I haven't even enabled FXAA this whole time playing. I will look at it and see if I can lower MSAA and add FXAA. I still see shimmering while in the loading screen and such with even 8xEQMSAA. Adaptive is awesome and looks as good as SSAA to me BUT as usual, there is texture related issue with layers. SSAA, even at 2x, hurts performance by about 8-40fps. I've settle on the 8xEQ but still would like something added on top so I may just try FXAA later to see.

Where do you get all these AA settings. I honesty know nothing of the differences.

I have and ATI GPU and use RadeonPro. You can basically have MSAA, EQMSAA up to 24xEX with the right setting, up to 24xEQ adaptive, and SSAA. There is more detailed methods but there are options, to say the least. I've tried lots of variables like enhancing app settings but that tends to hurt FR. Simple overriding has worked but with mixed results. Adaptive AA has been the best with the least performance hit but it causes minimal texture layer issues and odd texture issues. I want to use it but it's annoying enough for me to not want to.

Ah ok thanks.

Gonna play around with settings and try get a smooth framerate with AO.

Think I've finally found the graphics sweetspot for me in terms of mods installed.

This game is stunning in places:

If anyone wants my ini settings and a list of mods installed let me know. All running silky smooth on a GTX480. spent all of sunday sorting stuff with this game but its so so worth it now i can finally enjoy the game.

If you have something for your unique HW that is not in the OP. Make a post and I will link it. I have some unique by others but not for every single GPU out there so others with similar HW may like it.

Whats your FPS in Riften just walking around? the city

For those who had CTDs, did anyone try running the game in offline mode on Steam without trying anything else? I read one post on the Skyrim forums where someone had crash issues only after they allowed Steam to go online. Prior and post going online, he claims he had no problems.

I wonder how you can get rid of that grid like effect of tiled earth you can see in the distance. It's the only thing I don't like about this game.

Only thing I can think of is turning the LOD values down on my setup to get 40+fps in Riften, I already achieved 60fps everywhere else. You cant see people from far away which really sucks buts it is the only way to get more than 25fps in Riften for me.

Tried the FXAA injector. Not for me. Tried the realistic lighting mod and whilst I love the changes, the oversharpened look and noise really ruins it. Wish the nights weren't so washed out though.

Trying to balance settings with medium quality AO.

any recommended settings/ini tweaks/mods for this setup?

Intel Core i5 750
AMD Radeon HD 5850
4GB DDR3 RAM
Corsair Caviar Black 640GB 7200rpm

Check out the OP. There are a few different settings you can try.

Think I've managed to compromise enough to get a playable game with medium AO. I tested in Whiterun and ended up with an average of 57 fps. The average didn't change much but I made the minimum fps as high as I could. Turned down the shadows, viewing distances, decals and AA. Still pretty good settings but now with AO. How long I'll keep it like that is up for question. Might go crazy without a super high framerate.

AMD doesn't have an AO option at the moment... so...
