I'd be confident Winds of Winter will be done in a few years, before they get to the AFFC/ADWD season. He already had some of it written before ADWD was out, and it seems like he knows where he's going with that book.

However, I'm worried about A Dream of Spring, big time. He only has about 5 years, tops, to start and finish that before they're at that book in the seasons. That, as the ending to the whole series, will be a huge labour to tie up everything and end every story arc left. I just hope to christ he really decides what he's going to do plot wise in ADOS while writing TWOW, so it's just the prose he's got to work on. It's the only way I can see it being finished in time.

Considering how awesome the prose was in AFFC/ADWD in terms of describing both Westeros and the fact that winter is, indeed, tearing up the populace (particularly the blizzard ravaging the North), I think the only issue is the plot at this point.
 
ADWD was rushed out, which is apparently by some of the poor editing. I fear the next book could face the same fate if it takes longer than expected to come out - which is a given. Martin may have 100 pages done and be past the biggest obstacle of the series (so far), but he's still George RR Martin - it's gonna be awhile.

I meant his prose simply literally takes a long while to write.
 
The only thing that's going to keep them from finishing the series for the TV show is catching up GRRM writing the final two books.

I don't see any reason that AFFC and ADWD would not be adapted. The show is critically acclaimed and had very high viewership for an HBO show.

there is no way he ties up every story arc

probably a bunch of shit will be left open ended

They could split AFFC and ADWD into two seasons and film them back to back like SoS too. I just think there isnt a need for it, since they can both be done in 1 season pretty easily imo. Especially if you move the Ironborn stuff from Feast to Season 4.

But doing that would give them another year to wait for Winds and Dream if they needed to.

A lot of things could change in a few years. It'll be a lot easier to predict once we see how season 2 does.

Who knows what dramas HBO will be airing in 3-5 years, other than True Blood of course.

You can't really look at it like that. AFFC and ADWD are going to have to be heavily restructured to be on TV. By that point the show will have diverged significantly from the books and they won't be following them all that strictly. Padding out seasons to give GRRM more time would be a horrible decision. If he can't keep up they'll just go on their own with input from GRRM on what needs to happen.

I don't think they really need to be. The particular POV's in the Feast/Dance timeline are all pretty linear. They can easily be done in a single season. You would just need to trim the fat off some of the POVs. Namely Brienne's.

They are going to have to cut a bunch of POVs and locations simply to make those books filmable on a TV budget. Whatever form AFFC/ADWD take on the show is going to be very different from what they were in the books. Can those two books be made into one season after they are combined and heavily trimmed and cut down? That still seems like a difficult task. I don't envy the show runners when it comes to having to make post-ASOS material into a workable TV show.

The Ironborn stuff from Feast they can easily move up to S4. It would be nice if they could do the same for the Dorne stuff, but that cant really happen until after the Red Viper vs Mountain.

Also, alot of the other POV's don't get nearly as much action as some of the others do, and thus wouldn't have to be in every episode. You can probably fit Bran's, Sansa's, Davos', Arya's, and Samwell's Feast/Dance stuff in 5-6 episodes instead of 9 or 10 for example.

I think the way to do it would be to for season 3 to be about 2/3s of ASOS. Then about the first half of season 4 would be the rest of ASOS. The second half of season 4 and season then all of season 5 would be AFFC/ADWD. Moving on to the Winds of Winter in season 6.
 
If seasons 3 and 4 are filmed back to back I am not confident the show will get a fifth season. They will lose too much of their cast and crew if production goes on hiatus for two years.

Why would they? Seasons 3 and 4 are probably going to be most, if not all of ASOS and a little of AFFC/ADWD. They have material for at least another season with AFFC/ADWD, perhaps two.

I think they already said they were going to go chronologically. Also there is no way they could fit both books into one season not to mention the fact that they need to burn as much time as possible in order to let Martin finish up as much as he can.

It's pretty typical for HBO. I don't buy HBO sets unless they're on sale. Amazon currently has the BRD's for $55.
 
That's awesome that they're giving this the treatment it deserves. It's the type of show that will be huge with home release.

But wtf happened to Boardwalk Empire season 1? HBO done fucked up on that one. My favorite HBO show right now (well there's only that and this at the moment so lol)

I have no idea what the issue was with that set. It's not out until January 10th, 2012. :(

EDIT: Some rumblings online that they're delaying the BE dvd's to place those sales into 2012 because it helps their financials, but that's about all I can dig up.

I cant think of any POV arc in Feast or Dance that couldnt be done in 10 episodes.

According to the official Game of Thrones Twitter and Facebook accounts, pre-orders at the HBO store for the DVD and BluRay season 1 sets will come with an HBO Store-exclusive additional disc, “Creating the World of Westeros”, which should provide more behind-the-scenes looks at the production’s bringing the world of A Song of Ice and Fire to life.

Alas, the HBO Store is US-only, and the HBO UK store doesn’t even list the DVDs and BluRays yet. You can of course preorders for the DVDand Blu-Ray sets at Amazon.com and others retailers, but they won’t include the exclusive disc.

If they're going to burn time, hopefully they burn it on ASOS. There's just a lot of repitition between the chapters in AFFC/ADWD that's not going to make for good TV if they extend it over a period of time. Really I think they need to gut both books and just get through the big moments. Although this will will put them ahead of Martin's writing faster. But I think that's inevitable at this point.

They shouldn't think about GRRM's writing speed at all when planning this. If the TV series continues, it's inevitable that it will get ahead of where the books are. Martin isn't going to finish more than one more book while the show is still going.

Really one of the main reasons why I am hoping for two full seasons of ASOS (with the possibly exception of some Ironborn stuff from AFFC being in season 4).

It's possible. Don't give up hope. Martin would have to complete book 6/7 in about 3 years each. That's doable. At that pace book 7 would have to be out mid 2017. Which would be when a 7th season would be airing most likely. Which means the scripting and filming for S7 would be in mid/late 2016. Which shouldn't be too much of an issue, since most of book 7 would likely be done at that point if it were to be released in 2017.

Also, according to that Iceland report, Weiss stated that somebody who doesnt die in the books dies in S2. Any guesses on who that is? I'm guessing...

So looks like the Craster stuff is happening real early. That's fine with me, since the sooner they introduce Halfhand the better imo.

He never died. Speaking of which...

They could totally kill off Xaro Xhoan Daxos without any issue either. He disappears for a few books and then comes back in Dance for like a single scene that's more or less insignificant. If he has no future important role to play in book 6 or 7, then they can easily kill him off at the end of S2. If he was important in any way for future seasons, I'm sure GRRM would have informed the writers when asked. But the actor they got for him is a semi big name, and if they were to bring that character back, it would have to be S5 at the earliest, in which case the character would likely need to be recast.

They could also be talking about Meryn Trant, who probably ends up taking over the role of Mandon Moore and dies during The Battle of Blackwater. Other characters that are easily expendable are Dolorous Edd, Grenn, and Rast.

My best guess is
Ser Meryn Trant, who doesn't do anything of consequence after the first book and could fill Ser Mandon Moore's shoes, who wasn't cast.

Another strong candidate is
Bronn. His role after the second book is minimal, and House Stokeworth was cut from the second season. Bronn may end up taking Jacelyn Bywater's place in the upcoming season.
Although if they want to keep that character, I guess they could have him
betray Tyrion, start working for Cersei, and replace the Kettleblacks in the story.
 
Pretty sure Iceland is just going to be the mountain regions like the Frostfangs or whatever the mountains were called
where all the wildlings gathered.
There were pictures of Craster's Keep/wildling village from people driving around the shooting location of Ireland. Basically woods with a bunch of fake snow.
 
Exclusive disc is bullshit, but the sketch family backgrounds look pretty interesting.
Will watch the disc content when it is ripped to youtube on day one, and will purchase the blu-rays from Amazon. I've actually had the set preordered from day one.

Ya I forgot about Bronn. Either one of those Bronn scenarios would work well.
 
Looking at the box art of the bluray got me thinking, what will be the promo image for season2?

Ed Stark was a logical choice for the first season, but I am having trouble finding one particular character & pose that has that same presence. The two Baratheons standing back to back? Or is it an object?
The five crowns stacked onto each other, creating a column or something? Dany with slightly larger dragons on her shoulder?
