The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Ok the mod organizer is running but why doesn't it install the mods when I click them to install? They just go in the mod folder in the organizer main folder.

NVM, I sort of see. Testing now.

Ok so I can't laugh Skyrim through Steam or do I have to use the script extender? Someone help me on this as I want to still be able to launch from Steam.

This may have been mentioned, but this is the result I'm getting from wearing Morokei's mask and the Arch Mage's Robes at the same time:

lol that is so weird. I have zero mods installed.

Still i'll need to test blur =32 on my shadow settings ;p

I really hates what it does to distant shadows. Even in their shots, the effect it has shadows cast by trees is detrimental. iShadowMaskQuarter could possibly help that, but anything past 8 has hurt my performance.

Ok, if I can't run Skyrim through Steam than the mod organizer is useless. I don't want to run some special things nor can I find a way to launch through Steam.

How many dragons have you run into? I think I've killed a little over 30 in 120 + hours.

Lol. I'm about 85hrs and I've only partaken in killing two (1st one was the story one obviously and I didn't do much) and the second one was in a town where the towns people did most of the damage. All others I've run away, bar one that landed and two Mammoths beat him to death with their furry trunks! :lol

They keep jumping me when I am in areas where there are NPC's that I want to keep around. The last two attacked me in the mage university courtyard with quest-related NPCs left and right. :P

At first I was playing exclusively on m/kb, but using some 360 remapping mods I've actually found I really like playing the game with a pad (on the couch in front of big tv). So bizarre that Bethesda did such a terrible job mapping the buttons by default and doesn't allow you to change it up in game.

I would really recommend everyone playing with a pad look at the various options on skyrimnexus (there are several with different button assignments.) Being able to hot swap between 8 different spells/weapons, quicksave and quickload, and go directly to the submenus is pretty awesome.

Edit: This is the one I am using.

I've seen it brought up quite a bit on various forums for the reasons you yourself mentioned. The Dragons all have the exact same attack pattern and don't get any harder other than having more HP. For me, they've just become an annoyance that has to be dealt with before continuing my current quest.

Anyway, haven't tried it myself but there was a comment in one of the mods that is supposed to disable random dragons with the console. I'll be checking it out myself later.

Glad I'm not the only one. I like dragon fights, I DON'T like fighting them when I'm in towns or questing. What's the console command?

I get the same thing, and I don't use mods either. It's just a bug with the game itself.

Ok I have been using the LAA file since the first patch - but now with tomorrow's update I am moving over to the 4GB patch. I read the OP and the comments at the link but I am not sure if I can run the game through this new .exe and have Radeon Pro settings still used?? I mainly use Radeon Pro for AA settings and I launch the game by double clicking on the "Skyrim" profile inside of it. Does anyone know if I can launch the game outside of Radeon Pro using this 4GB patch, and still get the benefits of both??

Lows to 26 fps would be not playable for me [especially without motion blur] and thats on 580 lol. Strange that they havent compared performance in indoor with shadows, because for me hit on 8192 was small, but indoors my fps was in digits [i know thats the Skyrim bug :\].
Still i'll need to test blur =32 on my shadow settings ;p

Shadows look ugly here on their settings.

They are playing it at 2560x1600 with 8xAA and 16xAF. So I'm guessing if your native resolution is lower, performance would be better.

It's a known bug that can happen with all the mask + archmage robes (and possibly any other hooded armor/clothing). Sometimes reloading your save helps or you can just keep taking the mask on and off until it shows up (it will eventually).

set MQ106TurnOffRandomDragons to 1

I assume setting it back to 0 brings the dragons back. Should probably reload game between setting changes.

Awesome, thanks! I figured I'd just have to hope it was fixed with the patch.

I'm still getting this really annoying "load" problem, it's not happening all the time, but I just got to the bit where I got sent out of the castle to fight my first dragon and no matter what I do, when I try and exit the door the game just freezes on the loading screen.

It's so annoying, I was really really looking forward to fighting my first dragon :/

how long did you let it load, sometimes my game will lockup but if i just wait, it will load completely.

also i figured out how to fix those banding shadows. use at least iBlurDeferredShadowMask=4, and at least iShadowMapResolution=1024

Seriously? This shit looks awful. The Enchanting table doesn't even look like it's made out of wood anymore.
Wait, the enchanting table is supposed to be made of wood? I honestly couldn't tell. The original textures are awful.

Can't wait for a proper HD texture mod.

More static and noise! Yeah!! That's how do you 'HD'.

This. A majority of "HD textures" are just noises on the upscaled bump map ... So bad !

Look, I love this HD leaf mod I just made !

ho and I made a FXAA Colorblindarkness hyper contrast injector setting too !

Some of them are barely even that.

And yes, the number of shitty FXAA injectors from people with no conception of how they should be used and then saying they constitute an improvement is getting ridiculous.

I'm playing at 1920x1536 4xMSAA and 12xAF and on my settings i have mostly 60 fps and 40+ in towns on GTX 560. Probably the only difference are shadows [2048 and 4k distance].

I actually think that this mod looks better every other with 'upscaled' textures.

Interesting messing around with console commands..looking at wireframe mode.

Like you would expect NPCs have the most detail, and trees look well optimised adding relatively few polys each. Everything in the scene is at the max LOD.

You can run it through Steam.

Just go to Settings and select Proxy DLL. That should fix everything. Try it with an obvious mod first. I have the MO folder in my Steam directory but it shouldn't make a difference.

This makes me more confused...

So can I use the FXAA injector currently? Is everyone using it? If I just install it and run straight away now, will it work?

Just download, follow the instructions on the Skyrim Nexus page.

Just backup your saves and try stuff out. You won't know anything unless you try them out...
I don't know because I'm just on non-update version of the exe with the first version of FXAA Injector.

I've picked up an odd bug that I undoubtedly brought upon myself. What variables effect shadow LOD 5 feet ahead of your POV?

Also, has anyone else here experienced strange lurching? Sort of like you leaping slightly ahead in time every second or so. I've tried "temporal_wtf-ery=0" but it didn't help.

Oh, Bethesda. I know a company whose mother proudly stuck every C-laden report card on her refrigerator.

Ok, will try it again later. I tried it and liked that for Vurts mod, you could choose which tree bark and stuff through the tree of files. That's something that NMM needed and will make me switch over for sure. And the mods are not in the game folder.

And I did put the Mod Manager folder in the skyrim root directory. WIll definitely be retrying this later.

And looks like I won't be patching this either if things break. It seems like it would be wise to not patch anyways. At least until we get more in depth impressions.

Make sure the hierarchy is correct and maybe run it for the first time through MO.

Yea, MO is a lot more flexible. I find it easiest to create a folder for a new mod and manually copy over the files. This ensures that everything is in order. The mods all have their own folder in the 'mods' folder inside the MO directory.

I really need to start using some kind of mod manager, lol. Not so much for installation help, since that stuff is as easy as it gets, but just to keep track of what I have installed (though I keep info for everything). I also wish skyrimnexus was more effective about indicating which files have been recently updated.

I don't get the breaking resistance with the patch on consoles...what does this mean? and if you change Steam to not auto update the game,as soon as you go in the game and log out,it goes back to auto save for me...

Oh and how do I open the "CONSOLE" on the PC again so I can restart my bugged quest?

so guys how do you get steam to stick the not update game option... like If I restart my computer, and steam starts and auto updates. I new this update would fuck something up, I have the option to not update, but it never sticks.

Yeah, I've got a bundle of .rars in a separate Skyrim mods folder but damn if I know if I've even installed them all and where the files are inside the data folder. >_>

.esp files are easy to track, not so with texture mods.
