The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Am I the only one who hasn't done any modding because if it's going to take 30 minutes to get some mods installed and working I'd rather spend that in game? Hell, I haven't even installed Large Address Aware or anything.

One day I will, but for now, I'd rather be playing.
LAA is one of the easiest and fastest mods available (should take a minute tops, all told) and it will greatly improve your experience.

There's no reason to not do it.

Right, I now can't use my arrow keys to navigate menus. Unlike before the patch.

Part of the UI control improvements I guess

I don't think I've ever encountered a mod that took 30 minutes to install.

This does not work people. If you try going back and using the old-exe the "features" of the new patch still exist, including the broken R and Tab keys, the auto-move, etc.

Whole thing is broken hard on PC. Thieves can't use A and D to unlock doors anymore. WTF?

Check the Skyrim.esm file in the Data folder to see if it was updated. If so maybe reverting to an older version would undo any changes.

I've only downloaded the improved water and improved smoke/fire mod. Most of these texture mods are still works in progress so I'm not bothering because I don't want to constantly update them all.

I'm waiting for people to get some work done after the Creation Kit goes out.

If they'd just get the creation kit out, the community could fix a lot of these stupid bugs in no time.

It's pathetic really...these bugs were apparent within minutes of installing the patch yet somehow their "QA" missed them...terrible.

God dammit. Stop blaming QA. I promise you, they are JUST as passionate as you about putting out a good, quality product and they bust their ass to find and document those bugs. But just because a bug is in their database doesn't mean it's guaranteed to get fixed.

At the end of the day what gets fixed and what doesn't get fixed is NOT up to QA. That's way above their heads. Some "producer" or "suit" figured it's not worth the delay to fix something that doesn't break the game. Keep in mind, "break" in this usage is defined as the game just NOT loading. Period. Which is occurring but probably not in significant enough amount to "justify" them delaying the update.

I promise you, QA thinks that ONE CTD or Freeze is too many. Blame the people waiving bugs. Not their QA staff.

Mods take 1-5 minutes to install. Including download time. It's too simple not to do it.

Fixed everything apart from the not being able to use arrows. Thank god for ini backups.

It improved nothing for me. It's great for people who want to up their ugrids or are getting mysterious ctd's, but for other people it doesn't help anything so no reason to use it.

Man, with file modification dates like that, it's like they're specifically trying to keep you from being able to roll back to earlier versions.

Could anyone who hasn't installed any mods say if they are having problems?

I haven't installed any mods, and my gamepad is screwed up and magic resistance is broken.

Damn..I started Steam in offline mode, so I still have the previous version thankfully.

I had the same problem with fast travel along with the game menu not displaying after the update. I ended up deleting all of my ini files, reinstalling my mods, and everything was fine. N.B. I did not reinstall Skyrim Script Extender or Val's Crafting Meltdown. I am not certain but I think that Skyrim Script Extender was the problem causing fast travel not to work and Val's Crafting Meltdown caused my game menu to not show up. Again, I am not sure, but that's how I fixed those problems.

Thanks I'm going to try this now. I'm also having problems lockpicking. As in, I CANT!
But hopefully this will fix it to. I'll let you know how i get on.

Downloaded the newest water mod and the optional fix for it "RealisticWaterTextures.esp". Where do I extract the fix to?

edit: Forget that, newest version is already out!

Is the patch still causing issues? Someone said that they retracted it?

Do I need to start Steam in Offline mode? I haven't been on since last night sometime.

ive never seen a games company instill such fear into gamers when they announce a patch... the fear however is clearly warranted!

I won't lie when I found out the patch was coming within the next day or two I literally said "oh...great" out loud in a depressed tone :lol

I'm just wondering what they'll break next.

How do I start Steam in offline mode? I never see any option or anything. Just unplug my cable I assume?

That'll work, if it can't connect to the internet it will give you the option of starting in offline mode.

With Steam already on you can also chose to restart steam in offline mode under the 'Steam' tab at the top of the screen, I did that last night so it always starts in offline mode now until I chose to go online.

Gotdamn I just got home. So shit got real and fubar'd with this patch? This page is brutal reading.

Bethsoft guy just posted his link to the pre-patched exe AND interface (which is causing problems)

QUOTE TO SEE

Thanks for the others who don't want to work for it. It has been in the OP for a bit and will continue to be until we don't need it anymore.

All right, I think reverting to the old EXE fixed magic resistance, but not my gamepad problems.

I told my brother I wasn't going to buy this game until a couple months had gone by. I have no idea why I changed my mind. Every one of Bethesda's games are broken for months after release.

This is the first time dealing with this head-on - most Bethesda games I haven't had trouble with (FNV was the first one I bought on release, F3 and Oblivion were far post-release buys), but hollllly shit Skyrim is a different, buggy, beast.

As long as the guy needs to - however I am going to upload the Interface BSA separate just in case people just need that one file.

If it works widespread, I may link it in the OP. It seems important for the developments after today's patch. I swear by the time it's all said and done we will have like 5 or 6 of these workarounds just to play the game right :/

-Fixed rare issue where dragons would not attack
-Fixed rare issue with dragons not properly giving souls after death
I don't know about y'all but these were not rare for me.

Installed the patch earlier, I'm not having any real problems outside of the magic resistance.

Same here. My only other complaint is the dragons. My first post-patch encounter ended up with the dragon getting itself stuck in the ground. :-/

I have to laugh at this, from the readme.txt

2. Manual Addendum

Containers - To open a container, press E.

General:
-Tab exits most menus or moves focus back one level
-In most cases E also works as ENTER
-0 works as ENTER on the Keypad

Most...? Whoever was in charge of making those kinds of decisions should be shot.

Confirmed, the rollback Interface BSA has fixed all UI problems with me, including not being able to:

  • Press the R Key to grab all items
  • Press Tab to exit menus
  • Fast travel on the Map
  • Finish working through the showracemenu on the console

And so on

Could anyone who hasn't installed any mods say if they are having problems?

No mods here, and I've only made a couple ini edits (master volume, tree self shadowing, and the water tweaks that were floating around in the first few days) and in about 40 hours of play I've had 3 sudden CTDs with no warning (more like quits to desktop in that the program just shut down and was gone in an instant). Otherwise no issues.
