Kentucky church bans interracial couples

It's racist but it's absolutely no worse than churches that ban gay members.

Maybe not worse, but certainly different.

Most churches I've seen rarely outright ban people. Usually they begrudgingly let them in then proceed to try to 'correct' them one way or another.

I dunno guys, just because her friend texted "Yuck" at her dating an Indian guy doesn't mean its racist. There can be 100s of explanations.

^^ where is this crowd now?

Most of these people don't believe Jesus was Middle Eastern. Keep in mind the classic picture of Jesus that they think of, he's clearly Caucasian. Even if you were to walk them through the logic of it (Jesus was born in the Middle East.... so by definition he's probably Middle Eastern), I think they'd still refuse to accept it.

I really don't understand that lol. I mean picture God however you want, I just think of either an big jacked old guy with a long white beard (the image like 80% of Christians have when they think of god, it comes from Zeus/Jupiter), or just some force that permeates everything.

But the whole image of Jesus thing, you can't really escape that one. Dude looked more like Osama than this aryan poster child that people throw around these days.

thing is...I don't get why it matters what he looked like. If you're going to stop believing because JC wasn't white then you probably weren't that much of a Christian to begin with.

But that's a whole different topic. As an aside that probably shouldn't be in this thread and I would love to make a thread about this to discuss it so if anyone else is interested please let me know since I think it's a very interesting topic. Having grown up around these people, first of all, they're insane. Not Kentuckians but the evangelical religious people. The ones that go to the mega churches and have their masses broadcast on national TV and their pastor is blasting homosexuals and minorities, yet at the same time there's a 50/50 chance that pastor is having an affair with a male minority. (I really can't call out other people's pastors for that sexual stuff though, I'm a Catholic, so...yea...)

let's be real....the religious conservatives in this country are some of the least Christian people who claim to be Christian...They're all about nationalism and keepin them immigrants out and fightin them filthy minorities and stoppin em from polluting our daughters....that they completely miss the fucking point of Christianity.

If Jesus came back today, you think he'd be hanging out with these people? I doubt it. These guys at this church, (I hate to get political but...) the religious right, etc., are the exact opposite of the people he would be hanging around with. He would be out helping the poor, and the homeless, and the sick. He wouldn't be sitting around chatting with Rick Perry.

Anyway enough of that. Sorry for the derail. But if anyone wants to talk about that let me know and I'll start a thread on it because the hypocrisy of the Evangelical community in the United States is insane.

Racism in Kentucky? And hypocritical, too (Pssst. Moses was married to an Ethiopian woman, you numbnuts).

Ok I get all the hate for the pastor, the church, and the people who voted on this and even those who walked out, but chill out with hating on Kentucky. There's racism everywhere. Kentucky is a great damn place so let's stop kicking the entire state for the actions of what appears to be around 10-40 people. We don't pile on anybody else for all the stuff that happens in their state. (Hypocritical of me with my Mississippi comments earlier I know, so sorry about those to anyone whose from Missippi) where are you from? I could probably find something that a group of people in your state did (or country if you're not from the US) and then generalize about the entire state/country for ya...

Can't fault him there, there are some hot Ehiopian women.

Yup, it's fucking amazing.

Yup, it's fucking amazing.

The King James Bible really doesn't help with this at all. The language is foreign to an American, but it is distinctly medieval British. Even knowing better as a child it was hard for the language not to paint a picture of knights on horses rather than fishermen on camels.

Who cares? It's a private organization. Do you have to go? Do you think interracial couples WANT to go to this church? I make no assumption to know their personal desires but suspect it isn't the number one destination. Is it a crime to be a racist?

I can understand why a Ron Paul supporter would prefer that problematic racist views not be discussed.

Also, you shouldn't use TinyPic for image hosting.

I'll discuss it all you want - but we won't get anywhere. Who cares what kind of worship, wacky as it may be, people want to engage in their own time??? With their own dollars and patronage? I don't care what you *feel* or *think* so much as what you do. If those people desire to limit their congregation to those of like mind and swim in such a pool, who are you to say nay?

I suppose what I don't get is - what do you want to do about this exactly? Close down the church? Force them to comply with mandates? Seems like some of the people in here are ready to call the government in to "reassess" the direction of this church. Haven't we been here before? I have nothing against interracial couples in the slightest, but who cares if this congregation chooses not to accept such? Their business what they do with their facility. I fail to see how a place of worship is any different than a home for this sake. This is not a place of employment, this is not a government job. This is small, irrelevant church. I don't even like churches, any of them. But I think it's silly to crusade against someone's beliefs to make their life "living hell" as some have said here based on a disagreement in opinion.

If your goal is simply criticism, I can't complain.

Fixed, thanks. (Though what's the deal/story with TinyPic?)

It's not racist.. The excessive contrast in skin color between two people sitting right next to each other is just too distracting to the preacher at the front.. He needs to be able to concentrate.

LOL @ wacky.

Wacky is Japanese game shows. Wacky is your kids after drinking too much soda.

This isn't wacky, it's a poison to society and an attempt to retard progress in an area that desperately needs it. (sorry, I have family in Kentucky and know how it can be).

They are operating within the law, but so are their critics so far and they deserve every headache they get imo.

Gouge his eyes out in the name of God.

Problem solved.

I care. Now no one has to ask this anymore in this thread.

...and the rest of the state continues to embarrass my city

And with this, I'm unsure if you are an embarrassment to your city or if I should go ahead and be prejudice and say your city is an embarrassment to the rest of my state. Sad to say, but I think I've encountered more judgemental, self-absorbed assholes from Louisville just on this forum than there are members of this church. Thankfully I have enough friends in Louisville to know that not all of its residents are like you.

great post.

That's all at least as far as I'm concerned. Public criticism does have the power to change people's views over time.

Images there occasionally get replaced for some reason, so you could wake up one day to find yourself with a goatse avatar.

The church is free to do what the hell it wants, why is this an issue?

If you go to the church and you're an interracial relationship, you obviously want to stop going there anyway after this, even if its reversed, cause holy shit racists all up in that joint.

It's an issue because it shows that Racism is alive and well in America in 2011.

Don't be dense.

That part about 9 people voting for makesm e feel uncomfortable. It's like there were nine incredibly racist people in there who were so sure about their ideas that they wouldn't let no other party stop them, I imagine them looking sort of like this:

phalanx.jpg

Six people who were inredibly offended by the whole thing, and who probably were shouting angrily at those not voting, and then 30-something people who were a little racist but didn't want to offend the very racist nine people by voting against it. Or the other way around possibly.

Well, I certainly agree you've got every right to express as much displeasure as they do joy, it's just the overzealous responses that are a bit unnerving in this thread.

Wow, good looking out.

That sounds silly to me. If these people really felt this was an important issue they would not have remained silent. In this case, silence is very much compliance.

Nothing dense about freedom of religion, speech, or respecting the right of others to have both.

Why not just admit that your church is racist and stand behind your beliefs if thats what you stand for. What turds they are.

Because they know their church doesn't agree with them so they had to make up a reason.
The recommendation "is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve," the copy supplied to the Herald-Leader read.
Basically, they did it because 9 people get the willies seeing it and they likely are related.

EDIT: By church, I mean both the 40 member church and the one they affiliate with- Free Will Baptists.

Of course racism is alive and well in America in 2011. It likely always will be. I don't recall refuting its existence.

Or that.

As long as you're not harming anything or anyone, be as fuckin' racist as you want, I don't give a shit, that's your prerogative.

You don't understand that the very act of being racist is a detriment to society as a whole. That the interracial couples who hear about this story are harmed by the inhumanity of it.

Racism doesn't happen in a vacuum.

It's racist but it's absolutely no worse than churches that ban gay members.

I can be wrong but I'm pretty sure you'll be hard pressed to find anything in the bible condoning racism in the New Testament (seriously do you expect? gay marriage by a priest or something?) while I'm pretty sure you can find multiple clear example condemning what they call abomination.
I mean you can find that a double standard but that's moronic to consider it so.
I mean they're pretty clear on that subject whether we agree or not.

This church is basically a disgrace to the movement they're part off, there's no basis for their move and it even goes against the very book they're supposed to be following.

There's ignorance and ignorance. Ignorance on the subject you're supposed to master is an incredible display of stupidity.

Anyone who is anti-gay marriage should also be okay with this. I guess.

Strawman here we go!

They're really not. Racism is detrimental to society, but the society around these guys has progress. In other words, the church vote is not a reflection of the community vote. Interracial couples, like the ones banned from the church, will be fine.
Racism doesn't happen in a vacuum.
This kind of proves that it does in the states at least. I mean looking at it on the surface, a place that has stereotypically been viewed as racist is not siding with the racist actions of a church. Sounds like progress.

On top of that, no ones rights have been trampled on, including the racist church board who have the right to think that way even if I'm not required to accept/respect it.

Racism doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Problem being that a good majority of the people that are racist will always be racist. So what can you do? You can't change 'em, so as long as they're not harming anyone or anything it's just best to ignore them and move on with your life. It's tough to change ignorant people, if not impossible.

If this church group was out burning down the homes of interracial couples or something we'd have a problem, yes, but as it is it's best to just let them do their thing the way they want. It sucks, I agree, but they have the right to have their own opinions on beliefs on the matter.

Edit: I mean its a fucked up situation all around, but I feel like trying to enforce changes on these people would just escalate the issue and make things worse.

You gotta be kidding?

I'm gobsmacked when stuff like this (or segregated proms) comes up. It really does seem like some parts of the US are years behind the rest of the western world in certain aspects. It's definitely newsworthy, keep shining a light on this stuff and it might just change.

Were you gobsmacked when some UK rioters were trying to incite a race war? There is a minority of over-the-top idiots everywhere.

The very act of being fat is a detriment to society as a whole. It sucks that some people are racist, but there shouldn't be a thought police.

I dunno.. Maybe. Even in deepest, darkest Canada, you wouldn't see anything like this. :/
