GameInformer: South Park RPG by Obsidian/THQ (PC/360/PS3, Creators Writing/Overseein)

I don't see how anyone wouldn't want to play a South Park RPG written by Trey and Matt. Even if Obsidian isn't the most acclaimed developer in the world, this game will be a lot of fun.

Wait... are there still people who don't know that South Park is one of the most intelligent and clever satirical looks at American culture? Do people still think it's a juvenile, poorly drawn cartoon focusing on poopy jokes? Amazing!

Is that show still relevant? (I'm serious, I don't know.)
Apparently, though personally I think it jumped the shark several years ago. I've been sporadically watching the newest episodes, and I've been almost uniformly disappointed. For a while I wondered if I was just getting too old for the show, but then I watched Cannibal! The Musical (an earlier Parker/Stone production) and realized that no, they actually used to be hilarious. Maybe having to put some actual effort into this game rather than throwing the script together at the last minute will make it a return to form, who knows? I'll be keeping an eye on it, anyway.

Also, who the hell is that standing between Craig and Timmy? Is that the Mintberry Crunch kid?

More and more I think about this the more it makes me sad. First Bioware with the pile that is Dragon Age 2 and now Obsidian making this. No real western RPG makers left. Truth me told the Wheel of Time game didn't even sit well with me and I'm a fan of the books.

I still remember the absolute shit that was South Park on the N64 and that was 13 years ago. I'm not getting tricked into another South Park game.

Unless, of course, it turns out to be good. I don't doubt Matt and Trey love video games, but every other South Park game has been shovelware. Why should I be even remotely excited?

My bet's on a sandbox world with tons of easter eggs and hidden shit to do. The ability to explore the town will be great. Obsidian has earned my respect (KotOR II, New Vegas) and Matt and Trey have made me laugh for 15 years now. Can't wait.

Not a big western RPG fan but damn I love South Park... so this sounds really interesting.

Wait, no PC version? I've been betrayed!

Thanks to a collaboration with THQ and Obsidian, Parker and Stone are writing the script, performing the dialogue, and overseeing the development of South Park: The Game. Unlike the cash-in Acclaim titles from over a decade ago, this ambitious project is a full-scale RPG for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. As the new kid in South Park, it'll be up to you to make friends and defend the town from a wide range of threats. Be sure to check out our January issue for all the details, as well as an interview with Parker and Stone themselves.

I own the 360 and PS3, but the PC has become my platform of choice over the last year or so. The mods for the game should be glorious.

Why get Obsidian to do it if they're not writing it? It's just weird.

Because they know how to write a videogame, and Matt and Trey don't necessarily? Seems like a perfect fit. Matt and Trey probably know exactly what they want to do, and Obsidian should be able to help them realize this.

lol

I would've been excited for this ten years ago.

So can we get a tally of all the reaction posts that only mention that Obsidian games have bugs and therefore Obsidian is a terrible developer?

Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess had show stopping bugs. Nintendo are talentless hacks confirmed?

I dunno why but I couldn't help but hear thunder go off in my head as I read this.

Not a fan of South Park at all (in fact, I fucking loathe the show), but I'm a major fan of Obsidian's output, so am a bit ambivalent at the moment. I wonder how it'll turn out, at least.

We have moved onto comparing their writing with shitty beers, so thats new.

Exactly. Just like how they collaborated with famous Broadway composer Robert Lopez on The Book of Mormon. Matt and Trey will probably be writing a bulk of the main story, with Obsidian helping them translate it into a living, breathing RPG world.

I'd say Matt and Trey's satire has only gotten smarter over the years, actually. There's a lot more depth to it.
