A good finishing move is something that believably knocks the wind out of your opponent or otherwise disorientates them for the duration of the three count. If you're going to have a submission finisher, it needs to allow for as little movement as possible, or at least it should cause the opponent to wear out trying to escape.

Another reason I love the move is that Stan's lariat was really well protected too, which is something you don't see that often nowadays. No one kicked out of the lariat for years and years, even the top guys like Baba & Jumbo when Stan first came to AJPW, but when Misawa and Kobashi kicked out of it in the 90's it really propelled them to the top of the pile because the fans believed so much in the lariat being a devastating, match ending move.
But AJPW and Stan understood that he could lose and still look strong as long as the lariat was strong. If he was pinned (which was fairly rare in itself, as most of his losses were via DQ or his tag partner, like DiBiase, getting pinned), no matter, because in the next match he might hit his lariat and it'd be all over. And in the end, they used the lariat to break mid-card wrestlers into the main event, whereas you compare that to the AA or RKO, and it's only ever kicked out of by wrestlers perceived at around the same level as Orton & Cena, wrestlers who are already in the main event.

Also, by that criteria, I think the following are my favorite finishers:
F5: spins the opponent around and delivers a full frontal impact, causing disorientation and damage
Shooting Star Press: opponent is usually already semi-out of it and the full force the your body coming down on them finishes the job
Styles Clash: full frontal impact with additional disorientation when the move is rolled into a pinfall.

I love Wade Barrett, but Wasteland is the worst, non-joke finisher in the WWE right now. I like the Rough Ryder, I don't know why you all are crapping on it.
Skull Crushing Finale is another terrible finisher. Especially when they put their hands in front of their faces as they hit the floor. Terrible.

Always liked the Package Piledriver, Steen's moves always seem to get the disorientation part of a finisher.

Also, I like combo finishers. Austin Aries had an awesome one in ROH. Kick to the head -> Brainbuster -> 450 Splash.

Evolution turned on Orton when he beat Benoit for the title at...Summerslam? I think. Haitch was giving Orton the thumbs up while they were celebrating and Orton was on Batista's shoulders, then HHH did the the thumbs down and they beat the shit out of him and kicked him out of the group. Batista's turn was essentially doing to HHH what HHH did to Orton.
