The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Enco, that after shot looks nice in theory but is too extreme and contrast looks like it's been turned down. Not to discount your shots but I prefer the look of vanilla a little more. At least until someone hits the right spot.
I can definitely see why some people wouldn't like it.

I'll try play with some different settings to see if it can be a little less extreme.

I'm not going to lie, I've not seen an example of the FXAA injector used well. Always over-contrasted, often blurred. The fact that it comes at a performance cost is a bad joke too.

Not a fan of these abload.de pics. That site has some freaking annoying flash/js ads that float over the image and cause pop-ups. (firefox plugins yeah yeah).

Speaking of birds, have you guys noticed that the bird shadows are way bigger than they are supposed to be? Several times I see a large bird shadow and pull out my bow, thinking it's close enough to take a shot at it. When I look up, the bird is waaay high up in the sky.

I just direct link my abload pics rather than linking to the page.

Hey, my rig is even worse! yay! and my game runs great!

I'm running a intel core 2 duo 2.0 Ghz with a radeon hd2400. I run the game at 800x600 awww yes!
What worked for me was using the ENBSeries patch found here

the guy has done similar patches for previous Bethesda games. The game runs pretty damn smooth since I installed that patch, like 40-50 fps consistently. Good luck!

Thanks! It runs alright for me already (I run an odd windowed resolution because if I do fullscreen I suffer from CTD too often) so this is great news :D

Havent played in a week, and when I booted it yesterday, I found that it was thrashing the HDD a bit more often than usual. The patch seemed to break my >2GB mod :/ Will reapply when I get home.

A less extreme modification. It's only very slight.

To be honest, the only real mod that is important in my opinion is the ini mod for the tree shadows and overall shadow quality. Everything else is completely down to personal taste.

Has anyone been deep into Blackreach? That place looks absolutely fantastic with AO on (not gonna post pics, don't want to spoil the :o moment).

It doesn't hurt performance though? ENB killed me without doing hardly a thing for me. I haven't even touched FXAA. I want to but only with the right settings. I really like the look of the game as it is even with just a few graphical mods like sky, trees, sunlight, and ore vein mods.

If anything, I do like the color added. Could I just go in and alter that without doing anything else that would hurt performance?

I've said it before but there's unquestionably a green tint to the vanilla game, like a very mild version of Fallout 3. Just a slight shift in color and the game looks much more natural.

Ok, back home.

Before (No ini/shader tweaks)

After (ini/shader tweaks)

Personally I feel the after shot is far, far more realistic. There's an fps hit though. Not sure if it's mainly the shaders or my ini edit. Probably half half. I'll probably turn down shadow quality a bit to improve the fps. I'm sticking with the shaders for now though. Pretty sexy.

My ini tweaks are just shadow changes for the most part. Followed some of the stuff in the OP/the geforce guide. As for the shaders, look a few posts up. I used the Himmelsrand shaders with settings from Confidence Man. I also have a load of mods that you can check out here. Started using the sun glare mod from isoku and love it. Much better with the new release.

edit: haha saw your comment just as I posted this. I can post some night shots too if they're wanted

I don't know man, my real life doesn't have horribly crushed blacks :/

I prefer these slightly more but could do with a titch more color. Otherwise, the lowered contrast does certainly make it seem like the detail is heightened but does make for a lot less realistic picture.

Not good water view pics to compare directly with Enco's yet. Been too busy and settled into the game to take many pics :O

The main thing I would want is more color in the distance but I think that's more LOD or terrain distance settings at work. Still give me a good realistic vibe. I would love colorful fantasy but the feel the game gives with the current pallet feels just right.

She's dealing with that wound remarkably well.
The crunches helped.

Not sure how you could edit that stuff without the shaders mod. There should be a way. I think there might be a 1-3 fps hit but I can't be 100% sure. Tested it in Riften (which is usually kinda taxing).

This.

The shaders mod looks better in snowy/dark areas.

edit: is that with the shaders liquid? If so, can you post your settings? It looks nice.

Posting one more time, hopefully someone will chime in.

Running a GTX 470 and everything is peachy save for the lighting, which seems to go a bit bonkers whenever my character moves or looks around. Sometimes it's more obvious than others; indoors it's hardly noticeable at all but it's especially bad outdoors, particularly at night. The effect is difficult to describe but it's as if the ambient lighting flickers spastically whenever I'm not still.

Fixes?

That actually looks really nice. What are you using to get that?
If I'm not mistaken, it's the same thing talked about in the previous page. I used his settings to take the sunrise picture.

Hmm that's odd. Tried verifying game files? No idea if that will help but it's worth a try (I would back up modded files first though). Maybe play around with the graphics settings, make sure you have the latest drivers etc. I'm guessing the drivers are the issue. Sorry if that's not much help.

I've done some testing in more locations comparing default Himmelsrand settings (with FXAA and sharpening disabled) to Confidence Man's settings, and I think I prefer Man's colors.

So if I use the SMAA files i lose the FXAA injector color settings? I really want the AA from SMAA but I like the shaders in the FXAA injector too much... is there a workaround?

Not AFAIK but I'd love to have one.

How much memory is Skyrim actually using for you folks? Even after upping the ugrids, using Skyrim 4gb (I'm still on 1.1 Skyrim), and making the corresponding changes mentioned in the OP for testing out ugrids, mine is rarely going much over 800,000k according to task manager (in the memory column.)

I'm starting to realize I don't think I've ever seen a game use more than 1,000,000k according to task manager. But firefox can.

Any inventory mods out yet? Even going to the Oblivion style stuff would be a big step up since it at least had value/attack/defese/weight/whatever sorting on top of tabs.

It would also be very nice to be able to pull up a different favorites menu for items/weapons/offensive/defensive spells since the number of hotkeys is very very limited (I couldn't even use 0 and 9, only up to 8?!) and browsing through a single favorites menu that has everything thrown in together is still a chore.

QD inventory can sort by all that stuff. It's still pretty rough though, and I'm not sure if he's fixed enchanting yet.

So for the life of me, I could not seem to get the Mod Organizer to work yesterday. I followed liquid's instructions from the OP but none of the mods would show up. It was my first time playing with mods for skyrim and I put with the 4gb fix and skse in there as well. Is that right? Or am I suppose to apply both the 4gb and skse first?

You put the 4GB and SKSE files into the main Skyrim directory. They're not enabled the same way as other mods.

Hit the refresh button in MO to see if that helps. I'll take some screenshots if you give me a bit.

Sorry guys, some of the mods have unique instructions. Always have a look at the read me's as the author may specify specific instructions.

A question regarding upscaling:

I'm running this game on my laptop, which is connected to my TV via HDMI. The game runs pretty great, but the laptop can't really handle running it smoothly at the TV's full 1080p resolution without lowering the visual settings quite a bit. So, my question is this: Does it matter if I output 1080p to the TV (which I normally do) but run the game at a lower res (thus letting the Nvidia GPU handle the upscaling), or if I set the output resolution to the same resolution as I'm running the game at (thus letting the TV do the upscaling)? Will one or the other affect performance in any way? What about IQ?

Also (I asked this before, but got no answer, so here we go again):

When I walk up to or by an NPC and he/she starts talking (before I've actually started a conversation with him/her), I often get a small hickup/stutter as the game loads the audio (just for the first thing the NPC says, after that it's smooth). It's pretty annoying when I'm just out walking and someone close-by starts talking. Any way to fix this (besides getting an SSD)?

You can output at a lower resolution and let either the GPU scale the image or your TV. For a long time I played Crysis at 1280x720 outputted to my 1920x1080 TV as my card just wasnt good enough to do all i wanted at 1080p. The IQ took a noticeable hit, but it wasnt so bad i was upset or anything.

Yeah, I know I can do it. I am doing it. I just wanted to know whether or not letting the GPU rather than the TV do the upscaling could affect performance in any way.

no it wont affect the performance at all. most of the time the GPU will do a better job of it then the TV. Some high end tv's do have some great scalers though. I suggest testing and see which you like more. But in terms of any frame rate hits, no the scaling operation actually takes place after all the heavy lifting.

Updated the pics to remove the arrows as I felt they were distracting. Also changed some of the wording.

SkyUI is an inventory mod to keep an eye on. At the moment it's just the inventory screen, but they also plan to mod the barter screen and other parts of the UI, since they're able to work on each section individually.

Screens.

Edit: Should note it's not available for download yet, but they say in the thread on the official forums that they will probably release it with the next patch.

I figured out what was causing my loading screen freezing problem.

It was the "Map Full 3D" Mod.

I removed it and haven't had a problem since. Perfect :)

Nice pic guide there Enco. I have been adding my mods manually and just clicking the zip files. The MO is definitely better as it lets you pick manual files like in Vurts flora mod. In NMM, you can't even go down and add individual files based in the folder hierarchy. If NMM had that then I probably wouldn't have jumped ship. MO earned my commendation.

So does anyone actually use Skyrim HD?

I really should have used a Mod Organiser, but instead I just dumped my mods in the Data directory manually.

Is there any way to undo that?

You'll just have to go in and remove it manually. Go check his uninstallation instructions and/or download the mod again and see which folders/files belong to that mod.

That looks fuckin amazing. Just missing Equipped items on top. Is that possible? The other inventory mod didn't seem to have it either.

Yeah, they've been messing around with equipped items on top. Here's what one of the devs said about it.

One thing that might be removed again for now is the equipped items on top. I know it has been requested and it seems practical at first, but after testing it a bit, it's rather annoying to me. Let's say you have a list with 100 entries, and you're at position 80. Now if you equip something down there, the item is moved to the top (so it disappears), and the whole list is updated to everything moves one entry towards the bottom, which means you don't recognize it anymore (the whole list changes in an instant). You have to rescan everything with your eyes, and I find it irritating, even if its just a single page that's reordered. At some later point we can add it back as a configurable option.

Enco or someone with more experience might answer better but if you stick those mods into the mods folder in the Mod Organiser sub directory, it may pick the up. Depending on how many mods you have I would just re-install them with the MO. That way they will be registered with that app for future removal or updates.

And that UI mod is certainly one to keep an eye on. Pending it doesn't break the game then I may look into it.
