I got nothing on Americans.

That photo has been around for years and I always thought it was taken in Germany (and likely by Germans).

Anyway, aren't more "modern" electric circuits designed to prevent any risk? I was told that with them you could not do e.g. the classic hairdryer/toaster-in-bathtub stunt. The power would be turned off immediately.
(of course I would still not dare to step into that pool)

Yes, pretty much all high voltage devices have trip sensors in them that will cut power.
Mythbusters proved this.
