Hey Guys,

I wanted to know if anyone had purchased the ASUS G74SX-XA1 am thinking about buying that and wanted to know if it was a good system.

What do people think of the Asus N55SF? (£750)

Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2GHz
6GB RAM
640GB HDD
15.6" Full HD
Blu-Ray Player
NVIDIA GeForce GT555
Webcam
Bluetooth
Windows 7 Home Premium

or the MSI GX660R which is more expensive. (£1100)

Intel i7-740QM Processor
6GB of DDR3 RAM
1000GB HDD ATI HD 5870M 1024MB GDDR5 Dedicated graphics
Dolby Surround
15.6" True HD LED

I am sure you will not believe that one :

The Medion Akoya P6812 (MD 98760) offers a GT 555M for... 499 CHF in Switzerland by Aldi. OK, the processor is an Intel Centrino. Is this notebook a good gaming notebook nonetheless ?

You'll find a lot of impressions in this thread.

Well the 5870M is twice as fast, so I'd take that one if it's in your budget.

I dunno, exactly which processor is this?

K.jack, is there something around $650 or so with a better screen than the $550 Acer you are recommending?

I've read that the resolution is terrible.

Unfortunately 1366x768 is the industry wide standard resolution for most every budget notebook. I narrowed the Newegg search down to machines in that price range with higher resolutions, and these are it. The bad news is that not one of them has a GPU you could use for gaming.

if I don't have an immediate need for a gaming laptop (I don't have one at all, but my 2007 desktop is still sufficient), wouldn't it be wiser to wait until the new chip architecture is released in a few months?

Can someone quickly evaluate this Acer Aspire for me? I was close to settling on the one that K. Jack normally posts, but this is way cheaper. AMD Phenom II Quad Core @ 2.2 Ghz, 1600x900 17" LCD, 4GB RAM, Radeon 4250.

Again, this would really only be for WoW and Star Wars: The Old Republic.....but I'm not sure how to judge mobile CPUs and graphics chipsets.

Yes.

The 4250 would not be anywhere near enough to play SW:TOR.

Where can I get a 14 inch laptop that is as powerful as an m14x but not as ugly?

Nowhere. At 14", it's in a class of it's own, as no other machine has anything near the strength of the GT 555M.

But it weighs 6.4 pounds and measures 13.2 x 10 x 1.5 inches, so it may not be too much lighter than competing 15" models with much faster GPUs like the GTX 560M.

The 4250 would not be anywhere near enough to play SW:TOR.

Just out of curiousity, is there a decent graph or listing of mobile GPUs in order of performance? I haven't even really kept up with desktop GPUs, and I have absolutely no idea what all the different brands and model numbers and chipsets mean for laptops.

It'd be helpful if I could evaluate a laptop without having to come here and ask about every single thing that I find. Not that I mind, but I suspect it might get on your nerves eventually :P

While its order of ranking is not perfect, NotebookCheck is a good source for the basic specs of each GPU.

I also like Tom's Hardware's Graphics Card Hierarchy, because they list mobile GPUs along with the desktop chips to which they should perform similarly.

That should give you a great start.

ok so I just bought a laptop on cyber Monday but it was an impulse buy...
Xps 14z
Core i5 2430
Intel HD 3000 integrated.

Question...

Since its got USB 3.0 I have been reading that nvidia is interested in making external graphics cards just like the external graphics card included with Sony's newest flagship laptop (I think the z series?).

I tried searching but wanted to know if any have come to market yet by nvidia or otherwise?

Would be good as I really don't game alot especially when traveling with the laptop and an external would probably be better than anything dell would put into their slim laptop z line.

I am hoping to play SW TOR, but not on integrated graphics ideally

Hello,

I was wondering if this was a decent laptop for the price:

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/p...0944&ci_sku=sku5284343&_requestid=201607#desc

I looked at the Sager HP8150 with the upgraded 6990 graphics card, it was about 1500$ but screen was 15".

All I want to play is WoW, D3, SC2, maybe ToR and PSO2 next year. I would like to play those at high/ultra with a good frame rate however. The two lap tops above should be able to handle those games no prob, right?

Is the ASUS I linked and the Sager overkill for games that I enjoy? Would there be a cheaper alternative?

Sorry, Im kind of all over the place lol. I have always been a desktop pc person, this is my first laptop. Its kind of intimidating.

Thanks

Hey there laptop-age,

I'm in the market for a 14" machine that will handle light gaming. By light gaming I mean mostly World of Warcraft on moderate settings.

Best sub $500 machine for this?

This is by no means a gamer-approved laptop, but I bought a laptop strictly for school (so no dedicated graphics card).

And I was surprised to find out the thing actually plays quite a few recent 3D games. That's a cool bonus I guess, even though I'm not a PC gamer.

Mind sharing what laptop it is?

Thanks K.jack for this.
I'm not in a rush to buy a laptop, so I will wait and see.

I got this a month ago, would I be able to play decent games on it?I would have to get windows on it obviously but once that's on can it be a high end gaming rig?

572181_7.jpg

MacBook Pro 17''
Dual-Core i7 2.4GHz
4GB RAM
750GB HDD
Radeon HD 6770M

Depends on what you consider "high-end". The 6770M is about the speed of the desktop 9800 GT, and can be very competent at 720p.

So the new Envy laptops will have 76x0M cards, which are renamed 67x0M cards... disappointing, guess I'll just get a dv6tqe then.

Yeah 7690M/7670M were supposed to be real 28nm chips, but the yields are too low, so BAM... they toss in rebrands.

Feels bad, man.

Hey guys, need some advice...

Looking to get a 14-15" machine that will be good for all around use and light gaming. By light, I mean an occasional World of Warcraft session or Source game. Nothing heavy.

What's better for this?

New Sandy Bridge i3/i5 with Intel HD graphics or the newer AMD APUs with dedicated graphics?

From what I understand, the Intel CPUs trump the AMD ones, but the AMD on board graphics kick Intels ass.

Basically I'm thinking between these two in terms of specs:

I've been looking for a new laptop to replace my three years old Acer, and at the moment I'm somewhat leaning to Asus. What I'm wondering about is what's the actual difference between Nvidia GTX 560M and GT 540M, apart from the amount of memory (3GB vs. 1GB)? The 17.3" model with the former GPU costs 1400€, and with the latter 1000€. Both of them feature Intel i7 2670QM 2.2GHz CPU, and 8GB of system memory.

Will I be able to play the latest games with GT 540M (not planning to play Crysis), and how much would I need to make compromises in the graphical settings compared to GTX 560M? And is 1GB of memory enough for GPU these days?

Games I'm interested in...
Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Witcher 2, and some other games only available on PC.
Xbox exclusives not available on PS3, like Gears of War and Halo series.

The Witcher 2 is for more graphics hungry than Crysis as far as I understand it. Keeping tabs on the thread for when January sales role around as its new laptop time!

The GTX 560M is effectively 2.5x the speed of a GT 540M, if we're gaming at 1080p.

I have a question about my laptop.

This monitor I have looks excellent for the games I can play (like Bastion, for example. Or many recent games that aren't hugely demanding), but hooking them up to my HDTV through HDMI makes them look better. I mean, duh. 17 inches vs. 32 inches.

However, the display doesn't scale well with my (now 4 year old) TV. I had to tweak it a little bit and even then it wasn't perfect. Not to mention it's an extra wire that removes one of my HDMI-hooked systems, and presents an unavoidable tripwire for the room.

Now, I can buy a longer HDMI cable that solves the intrusive problem, but I'm still going to take this laptop to class for notes.

I'm not the sort of person who likes to hook up a gaming system every time I want to play it.

Is doing this (HDMI hookup) worth it, or should I just stick to what little PC gaming I might do on the actual PC screen?

Any thoughts on this laptop? I was going to look at it tonight.

I'm no expert but if you're spending that kind of cash for a "gaming" laptop wouldn't it be much smarter to get a good desktop for 1000€ and then spend 400€ on a laptop?
If you REALLY need a gaming laptop check these out
MSI GT683 15,6" ~1000€
Asus G74SX 17,3" ~1400€
MSI GT683DX 15,6" ~1200€ (best option IMO)

I just got an Asus X53SV for secondary gaming machine when Im not at home. ( I have a 2500k + Radeon 5870 machine as my desktop)
Will it be able to run SW:TOR?

Specs:

- Intel i5-2410M (2.3GHz)
- nVidia GT 540M 1G DDR3 VRAM
- 4096MB(1x4096MB) DDRIII 1333
- 640GB 5400rpm SATA

For 599 euros, I think it was a good deal?

@Speevy - Sounds like a simple issue of convenience vs reward

@Loto - You'll max D3 @ 1080p w/ a GTX 560M. Good buy.

@Tonza - An i5 + 540M will definitely play TOR comfortably

Yeah, I know, but sometimes I need to take the system with me, when I'm spending a longer period of time at my girlfriend's flat, or when I'm taking longer trips with train. I've thought about getting a desktop, as it's not that often when I need a portable system, but I do like the option to be there. And I really don't want to maintain two systems, and transfer the needed files to both.

The MSI models are not really suitable for me, as their screens are only 15.6", which is too small for a main system, and the Asus is exactly the same I mentioned in my post. It's a shame, that many of the beefier laptops feature 15.6" screen. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Ah, thanks for the info. Seems like a drastic difference between the GPUs, but I'm not so sure whether it's worth 400€ extra. What's the consensus between i5 and i7 CPUs when it comes to gaming, any noticeable difference?

There's 17" versions of the MSI laptops.
GT780 (560m) ~1200€
GT780DX (570m) ~1300€

I bought it off Craigslist. Its a jewel. IF anyone is in the Jacksonville area, there is a guy selling a Asus G73 JH for 500.

But yes, can anyone tell me about DOLPHIN?

I had a question about the new HP Envy's that came out recently. I like the design and some of the extra features it has but as I saw mentioned earlier the graphics card is pretty disappointing. Given that though, what exactly would I be able to run with that graphics card?

Hey GAF, university student here looking for a good gaming laptop. My budget is $700-$1200, and I really want a 17+" laptop that can run games like DOTA 2, WoW, and SWTOR at max settings. Anyone know any good christmas deals/recommendations?

I built a machine on my own a few months back, its a I52500k with GTX570HD Graphics and 8gb ram. Its powerful enough to play anything I throw at it, but I want a laptop too, hopefully powerful enough to emulate dolphin and ps2 games...

but overall I do not want to spend over 1200. I was about to get the Alienware M11x but is there some that you guys could recommend that may be more powerful and cheaper?

Just heard a rumor of an Alienware M11x revision coming out soon? Any truth to this? Sorry...no link. Just one of my twitter peeps posted it. I couldn't find anything via Google, this thread, or Dell's site.

Dolphin only uses two cores, which means the 740QM will run at 2.53Ghz, which is close to the performance of a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo.

You will be fine running this emulator.

It's around the speed of a desktop 9800 GT.

Buy this, purchase the 2 year warranty, and you're good to go.

What are your size, weight, and battery life requirements?

I haven't heard anything, and those also in the know on Notebook Review's AW forum haven't either. What I've been told is that Dell will not significantly remake the M11x until Intel's Ivy Bridge is available, which is Q2 012 by Intel's estimation. On top of that, the delay in the 28nm process's production means AMD and Nvidia have no new mobile GPUs to offer the M11x, unless Dell chooses a rebranded card.

Thus the most you would see in this "revision" would be a GT 630M, which is a straight rebrand of the M11x's current GT 540M. Intel doesn't even have any bumped up Sandy Bridge ULVs to sweeten the deal.

Given these factors, there's little reason to hold off, because there's nothing in the pipeline to revise, unless it's actually a change in the machines chassis itself, and the features it offers.

But hey who knows what mysteries are held by January's CES.
