iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

I've encounter a bug that's doing my nut in, and I'm not sure if it's well know about.

Listening to music with the iPod app open. Tilt it a bit too much by mistake for it to go to cover flow, put it back up straight again to portrait, and it completely crashes the phone, making it automatically do a soft reset.

Anyone knows how to downgrade the icloud storage back to the free 5G? I thought i needed the 10G plan but i do not store a lot of music or videos on my device and thinking it over i really do not need 10G so i am trying to downgrade my plan since I am within the 15 days to do so however whenever i click on the 5G plan the "done" button does not highlight, only when i choose the 10G plan. Anyone know what i am doing wrong?

Finally got my downgrade but it was a completely convoluted process. You cannot just do it on the device or even call. I found the steps on how to do it.

Go to www.apple.com/support/contact
Select Express Lane for MobileMe (DO NOT select Express Lane for iCloud)
On the next screen, ensure MobileMe is selected
Coose Account & Billing
Next screen choose Cancelling paid subscription; you can provide additional info, optional
Next screen choose Chat; provide requested info
Enter chat session; explain you would like iCloud Storage refund and your within 15 days
Apple rep will ask for birthday, address, phone and last 4 digits of cc used to order storage
You then get your refund

This will be a no charge chat. Shouldn't be this hard, but this should help.

I'm just pissed right now. iTunes Match is nothing but an absolute mess. I just got a cd that I want on my phone so I can listen to it at work today, but I can't get it there, because I have Match on and it hangs on step three with 2 of 11 songs uploaded. I've tried converting it, re-ripping it, and everything. It just won't upload. And there are only 9 songs to upload from it. I have no idea what the other two are or if this album is the one that's uploading it. I can't figure it out at all. And if I stop the process and start again it starts right back at 0 and gets stuck again at 2 of 11. That and there are still huge swaths of errors through some of my bands discographies, and I really don't feel like completely re-ripping those, too.

And to top it off your can't manually put this shit on your phone, because once iCloud is enabled it's either that or nothing. So I'm stuck.

Can anyone recommend an alternative to the standard "Music" app? The only problem I'm having with iTunes Match is being able to listen to my Howard Stern show files, which won't sync to iCloud-

It's so stupid that it's iCloud or nothing. Why I can't I sync what I want to my iPhone, and then whatever happens to be in the cloud shows up as an option for me to download? Why can't I choose what is synced locally? Makes ZERO sense.

Holy shit im glad I just read this. Was just about to try iTunes match. Having this on really does disable all regular synching??

I have an iPhone and iPad, but I only synch some of my library to my iPhone and none to my iPad. I thought with iTunes match, I could view my library on my iPad without synching and wasting the gigs. I rarely try to listen to music with my ipad since my iphone is always with me, but if its in the cloud i was thinking what the hell.

But reading up on it, it seems like listening to any cloud music doesn't stream but actually downloads each time you listen to a song until there is no more room on the device (at which point it starts streaming). And now it seems that turning it on will disable all manual synching? Is all of that really true? Is it possible to enable match on just my ipad so I can keep synching my phone as normal?

I have no clue why my iphone refuses to acknowledge iTunes on my pc for wifi sync anymore. It used to, for a few days, then nothing. And nothing changed on the pc end either, made sure the wifi was selected when I did a manual connection too...

Okay, so for real, what's the best way to auto-tag my iTunes library? I was hoping iTunes match would do it, but it sadly doesn't. Which is silly... it knows what my eleven untagged "Track 1" 's are, and can match them. But it can't tell me what it is and rename it.

Yeah this does kind of suck. I wanted to be able to choose to go to cloud tags or something. I have a ton of albums that I retagged a long time ago so that the song titles have the track numbers in them. It helped when I was using winamp so I knew the correct order and everything. Anyway, it's really stupid nowadays, and I'd love to have them without, but I'm not going back to that many albums and redoing it. Wish there was an option to click a group of songs or album and hit "use iTunes tags" or something.

Try MusicBrainz. Otherwise you're stuck with TuneUp or Rinse, both of which I found to be lackluster, and at least MusicBrainz is free. I just went through all of my stuff and it took a while, but it feels nice to have everything with a cover and the right information (well, mostly). I still really hate how iTunes does tags and hope 11 makes it dynamic/realtime; it's annoying to change stuff and then have to play the songs for it to update itself.

Did your iTunes update itself? Since 10.5.1 I can't sync by wifi or USB to my 4th gen iPod Touch -- I've tried everything suggested on their help pages and I've basically given up. Waiting for 10.5.2 I guess.

I don't know if this has been brought up by anyone, but has your Music app gone dumb slow?

For example, I'll be listening to song 10 of album A, and I'll go into the app, and look at what's playing, and it will be stuck saying "song 2" for about 15 seconds before it catches up and shows what I am listening to

It's frustrating when trying to rewind, skip, etc...

I don't know how I didn't find out about this before. You can dismiss banner notifications by swiping right to left on them. You can also pull a banner down slightly a few millimeters and then flick it up to dismiss it.

How to quickly and easily get rid of iOS 5 banner notifications — the little roll-downs you get in-app and on the home screen — seems to be a hot topic for our tipsters this week, and luckily you can do it in a couple of different ways.

  1. Touch and pull down slightly on the banner, then flick it up and away. (You're really activating Notification Center for a moment, but it has such a terrific, tactile feeling to it.)
  2. "Swipe" from right to left. (You're really not swiping, it's a subtle down up motion that's a faster but not as reliable version of the above.)

In both cases you need to be really careful you touch and keep your finger down, otherwise it will be interpreted as a tap and you'll be whooshed away to another app, likely the exact the opposite of what you wanted.

Either way, it does nothing to fix the central problems of banners — they roll down over content instead of pushing the content down, and they come in surprisingly enough that you can be about to tap a top-bar control only to hit a new notification instead.

Hopefully some sort of visual cue will be added, and the page content slid down, in a future update.

Ok, WTF. Now my iPhone wont sync music. It worked over wifi and USB this morning, now music will not sync at all. I check stuff off and it says it is going to add it, but I hit apply and then there is nothing.

Does anyone know if beta apps can operate out of the iOS sandbox? I just downloaded an app using TestFlight and I'm worried that it has the potential to screw with the OS...

A little confused by the iCloud stuff. I want to backup my bookmarks, Under the iCloud tab I have Bookmarks and Documents & Data set to ON. But at the bottom it says iCloud Backup is OFF, Will my stuff get backed up or is setting those 2 settings to on do something else apart from iCloud?

I believe if you have Bookmarks & Data and Documents "on" those will be synched to iCould in real time. So if you make a change and have a data connection, it will automatically be reflected in the cloud.

iCloud Backup is different. It's basically creating a restore point for your phone. You used to have to plug into iTunes to create a backup of your phone, but now you can set it up to do it wirelessly and automatically through iCloud. If you need to factory restore your phone, you have a restore point in the cloud.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding.

I love iCloud but photo stream is a little wonky sometimes if you have auto-upload/auto-update on. I haven't tried it too much on my iOS devices but on Aperture if I delete a photo I imported into Aperture after it has been auto-uploaded it doesn't update this in iCloud. I can understand the reasons why they did this but it's a little annoying to have to reset the entire stream because you hated one photo. I now keep auto-upload off on Aperture just to be safe.

I haven't been using the map app in the past few weeks but today I randomly checked and the dropped pin bug I was having in my city with iOS 5 is now fixed. I made sure to check when I updated to 5.0.1 but a stealth fix is as good as any! I'll pretend the feedback I sent to Apple helped in fixing it (maybe it did, who knows. I'm positive I'm the only one from here who did anything of the sort, lol). I can finally give the location reminders a proper try, even though most people say it's hit or miss due to the precision required.

Thanks for the info.

Can I subscribe to podcasts through the phone's iTunes? Or do I have to do it on my computer?

Can't find any way to do it...I'm sure I'm missing it (I just got it a couple days ago).

You could use an app like Instacast, though it wouldn't tie in with your itunes.

Has anyone switched to an iCloud mail for your primary email after upgrading to iOS 5?

I am thinking about doing this because I wanted to make a new email anyway. I was planning on just making a new gmail but then I thought why not just make it an iCloud email since I'm already in the Apple ecosystem.

So I made one, but I am still not sure if I want to make it my primary email or not.

From what I can tell GMail has 2 main advantages, they offer more space and have more advanced options.

With iCloud you get 5GB that is used for more than just email. While Gmail offers what like 7 or 8GB at this point just for email, but I don't really foresee that ever being an issue for me personally, and the advanced options seem to be things that I don't care about.

The things that are important to me though are the interface, spam filter and search.

I prefer the interface of iCloud email as it is much more simple looking and easier on the eyes to me.

Without making iCloud mail my primary email it is hard to tell if the spam filter and searching for emails works as well as it does with GMail though.

So I am wondering if anyone here can speak from experience how they like iCloud Mail compared to GMail

Good question. I have no idea how well the spam filter works. I use iCloud as the email for all my business/service accounts and Gmail for my personal emails. I get spam on Gmail and no spam so far on iCloud, but I haven't had iCloud as long. I'm hoping that I can avoid spam on iCloud by keeping it private (the spam I get on Gmail is from having friend's email accounts hacked/phished).

I have two problems. First is that my iPhone and my iPad keep receiving the same msgs from other iPhone/iPad users. It's really annoying and I would like to get my iPad to stop receiving them. Second, I can't get cloud to save my contacts. It only saves 3 of them, how do I fix this?

Edit* I fixed problem one, but my contacts are still not saving in the cloud.

If you're a heavy labeller in Gmail, there's no way you're going to get the search functionality you're used to. I'd been considering making this switch as well but I'm not convinced on the iCloud mail web interface at all.

5.1 beta 2 out.

NEW: Photos taken using iOS 5.1 can be deleted from Photo Stream on your device and will be removed automatically from Photo Stream on your other iOS 5.1 devices. Older photos can be manually deleted from your iOS 5.1 devices.

Wow, might actually use photo stream now.

My problem with Photo Stream is that some photos never get uploaded and then some that are never show up in iPhoto so it becomes a huge hassle making sure all photos are in iPhoto before deleting them off the phone. It's completely random and bloody broken to me. :(

Still trying to get the hang of using this thing and all I can do with it. I don't fully understand iCloud though. It seems very limited in what it can store and if purchased content doesn't count against your 5gb, how would one actually fill this up? I figured my own music not purchased would be what took up space but you can't store stuff like that?

Why aren't any Europeans talking about iTunes Match launching here today? I read, that Apple released it by mistake and will give a refund?

It's curious to me that Brazil was the second country to officially get iTunes Match, together with the long-awaited launch of the music section on the local iTunes store this week. I guess Apple is really interested in making a big push here (please, unleash the games in the app store).
