The Last of Us (Naughty Dog): Hold One Second

What are you guys talking about? UC3's prerendered cutscenes and real time cutscenes (there are many) are nigh indistiguishable.

There are very few actually, and graphics downgrades aside, the worst part is that the animation is nowhere close to the prerendered cut-scenes.

First info from the youtube vid

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague. Abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

Yeah from a non-cinematic perspective where the camera doesn't zoom in on the character's faces.

In the end what I'm saying is that it's smoke and mirrors, and eventually ND will have to let go off doing pre-rendered cinematics because it sacrifices gameplay possibilities. Don't expect real-time clothing/body damage over time, etc., in The Last of Us if the game has pre-rendered cinematics. It only works in games that are linear at absolutely all levels.

They are rendered on a PC, not on PS3.

Look UC3 has 'cutscenes' which are in real time and 'cinematic' as well. I'm just sayin.

Left 4 Dead
Dead Nation
Resident Evil
Dead Rising
House of the Dead (series)
Plants vs. Zombies
Dead Island
The Last of Us
Yakuza: Dead Souls
Rise of Nightmares
Dead Block
Read Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
Zombie Panic in Wonderland
Red Nation
Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies
The Last Guy
And like others have said, there's all the games with zombie enemies that just aren't called "zombies".

Looks nice, and Naughty Dog makes me interested, but I'm pretty sick of the undead at this point.

What's the source on this one.

For in-engine, that's insane.

The screens in the op are supersampled bullshots just like most Uncharted press screens.

The GIF of that infected with the fungus sprouting from it's head genuinely has my skin crawling. What a horrifically effective design, I hate it and love it at the same time.

If anyone can pull off a relationship between a young and old person it's Naughty Dog. By the end of the game I hope to genuinely care for that little girl, hopefully we might even get to play as her.

So pretend it's not a zombie. All of those zombie games have zombies with completely different gameplay characteristics-- fast moving, slow moving, intelligent, dumb, lumbering, agile, etc.

The zombies in this trailer don't even look like the zombies in a lot of games that have zombies. Call it a fungus monster if it changes things.

These fools can't even design a different character? They're stuck in Uncharted mode now or something. I thought it was a dark and serious Uncharted 4 for a second when I saw the dude.

But really zombies are sooo boring these days. And these guys won't make them any more interesting.

Wait and see on this one.

Yeah... because "small girl protagonist" is just becoming such a videogame cliché these days.

You guys are hilarious. haha

Ellen Page!
First thing I thought when I saw the girl. :) I was shocked when I saw the Naughty Dog logo. I'm interested in this game to see what they do with the zombie genre. Lots of color in the world which is very nice.

This really doesn't sounds or look like a game to be lumped in with games like dead rising and dead space where you kill hordes of zombies, this looks like a survival horror game no doubt.

So I wonder if Ellen Page is the only playable character. Certainly seems like she's the main protagonist. It could be a nice counterpoint to Nathan Drake.

They actually resemble some of the Shibito designs from Siren. They're scarier than most "zombies" since they're actually smart.

The things that have severely lacked in zombie-style games are lack of worthwhile characters, lack of polish, and usually very one-note. I don't see how anyone can deny that if any developer can rectify every single one of those issues and more, it's Naughty Dog.

Not sure why some people are so afraid to be hyped, or so quick to dismiss. Enjoy it :P

I don't agree at all. What I want in a zombie game is feel like I am there, I'm the one being threatened, not like I'm watching a movie. Only video games can do that, and sacrificing this idea to do what movies already do is a missed opportunity.

I am so hyped for this. Granted, we don't know too much about it yet but the trailer we saw seems like a wet dream of a video game. The visuals don't seem to be on par with Uncharted though, at least not in my opinion.

Can't help but feel disappointed. Naughty Dog reached such ambitious frontiers of gameplay when they were doing fantasy games like Jak and Daxter before they decided to go with the safe but refined route with Uncharted. And to see them stick with realistic scifi style shooter games just feels like a missed opportunity that a developer of their talent is being wasted on these type of games.

Nonsense. The IQ is much worst, as are the shadows, the rest is pretty much the same. Just get a character face close to a wall and manipulate the camera.

They are rendered on a PC, not on PS3. Games are made on PCs, not on consoles:p The engine/editor is running on PCs, and they rendered the cinematics on PCs.

Apparently not.

Now you're really stretching, cause if that's your definition of zombies, then the creatures in this trailer don't match that stereotype at all and your whole argument has fallen apart.

Eh? For the three seconds we see a creature they're clumsily running around a corner. Zombies traditionally have a bursts of speed when they sense something is amiss, but damn did they look like zombies with spores.

Again, we're talking about a short two minute trailer here. Can't really tell too much about a game with such limited information. I just know I got serious Walking Dead impressions from it.

You're forgetting monsters that are essentially zombies. Alan Wake and even Gears of War 3 had "slow moving brainless humans" which require the same tactics to defeat that a traditional zombie would.

I agree. It's just old. I was never really into zombies in the first place so this craze just turns me off a lot of games.

Just so you know my argument is not 'it is old.' I buy zombie games all the time. It's not old to me yet. But there ARE tons of zombie games and it's an inarguable fact that it is an abused theme at the moment. It is almost a crutch for some developers, that instead of coming up with a compelling original enemy they just fall back to the walking dead. Which is fine if the game is good, but there's no doubt it is everywhere right now.

My concern is that Naughty Dog's last three Uncharted games make me a little more cautious about my optimism toward this. I'm not sure the game will have good gameplay. Uncharted games are pretty decent, but they have a huge amount of flaws and they treat gamers like retards. If a 'survival horror' type game treats gamers like retards and allows everyone to win like in Uncharted, it really will destroy all tension. And a zombie game without tension might as well not exist. They need to stop worrying about if a player can finish the game because they suck so much and start worrying about if their game is being undermined by their constant anxiety over that fact.

This made me realize something.

ND will probably release 4 high quality games before VsXIII or Last Guardian come out lololol.

needs lack of guns or limited ammo. dead island would have been cool if they removed the repair shop. if survival game please don't have cheesy random repair shops or easy way to heal.

but my point is those are things that are already done. You want to feel imminent zombie danger then you can play left 4 dead or something.

I don't see what's wrong about living the thrills/scares of a post-apocalyptic world through the eyes of another character.

good job tip-toeing around my post dude. I was talking about the male character.

He didn't seem very Drake like. He doesn't look like Drake much, he certainly doesn't wise-crack like Drake, the girl does that. He is more of the mature and wise father figure. Completely different to Drake.

Okay, watched the trailer. Looks nice, but very L4D-esque. The tune, very much like L4D2, banjo-like stuff. But, I'm sucker for post-apocalyptic shit, so I'm in. Zombies, infected, mutants, just crazy humans, I don't care!

Apparently yes. What are you talking about? Of course they are rendered on PCs.

Hopefully they learn from the UC series and try to make some decent combat this time. Though they now have a perfect excuse to have enemies that take loads of bullets to kill!
