Yep. Just make sure the "send" button is in blue instead of green (meaning it will be sent through your internet connection instead of SMS). I'm in South America and I've been using iMessage with a friend in Canada constantly with no issues, including sending videos and pictures.

Is there a setting to make it only send through internet instead of SMS so I don't have to worry about it? That would be cool to bullshit with some people I know abroad with that.

if you've added them as a contact and only have their email address and as long as they've associated that email address with imessage it should work fine. If you have a phone number for them when you are messaging them it should say in the text field before you start typing whether you are sending as imessage or sms.

I dont know of anyway to make it default, in fact i sent some messages to a coworker today through imessage and it actually ended up not sending them through imessage and sent them as SMS, this was a first for me.

What captive said but in any case you can also go to Settings > Messages > and turn "Send As SMS" off.

Is there a way to just have iTunes never back your phone up? I'm using my old white macbook to do most of my syncing, and I've got a shitload more drive space on my phone than I do my computer.

Not sure if this really helps, but I do most of my syncing on an old G4 powerbook that has less space than my 4s. In order to alleviate the bloat, since my itunes library itself is ginormous, I actually have all of my music and movies stored on an external HDD so when I go to sync, I usually plug in my HDD and it updates any music/movies from the HDD rather than the computer itself.

How exactly does storage management work with iCloud? My 4S is generally close to capacity, do I need to worry about grabbing too much music from iCloud or will it automatically delete things I've previously listened to?

Is there a way of selecting which music track I want to play, and have all following tracks in that playlist shuffled? It seems I either have to choose shuffle to begin with, which means I can't choose which track it starts with, or I can select the track I want, but it then plays all the tracks in order from that point on.

Thanks.

EDIT: Scratch that; just found out how to do it. :-)

It falls back to SMS if one or the other doesn't have a data connection I think.

Music doesn't count against your iCloud storage amount. If you're redownloading iTunes music that you bought or pulling down songs you've obtained through iTunes Match, they are stored in iCloud for you with no concern for the number of times you download them down to your device.

iCloud storage is filled up by documents, backups and email.

I just picked up my iPhone 4S (64GB) and I am having a massive battery drain problem. I'm currently on the latest IOS version and it stays in sleep mode most of the time while I'm at work but I appear to be losing about 10% or more per hour. On my 3GS and the same IOS version the battery lasted much longer. On a full charge with light usage the battery could last 2 days before a charge was necessary. I'm having to charge this one every night under very light daily usage.

Is this a known issue? Any ideas?

I mean the space on my actual device. My understanding is that songs are being cached semi permanently rather than streamed.

Ordered my wife a 4s today. She's been pretty jealous of mine and she thinks she's stuck with her shitty droid for a while, so it should be a nice surprise. However, the only model I could get delivered by Xmas was the 64gig. Planned on getting her the 32 but whatever.

Oh yeah, anyone know how functional the otterbox commuter cases are? I don't want to get her something as giant as the defender, but the reality is she drops some fucking phones, so I need some reasonable protection.

It won't delete music on your device, you have to manually make room for stuff if you want to download more music. And yeah, it doesn't stream, it just plays as it downloads.

drain the battery a few times. problem sorts it self out by itself.

Playing music through Siri definitely needs some overhaul. Siri has a hard time to find my music properly!

I know it barfed the first couple of times I tried it (play Madlib), but then when I was trying to screw it up when demoing to my friends, it got everything (oneohtrixpointnever, j dilla, orchestre poly-rhythmo de cotonou FFS!) except a Czech composer. Dunno whether it does any learning or it got updated.

But I do wish I could prompt it to play an artist, and it would just play the albums in order rather than some hodge-podge order. I never remember album names =(

I have one really annoying problem. Whenever I am listening to music and I have to pause it, I push the home button to turn the screen on and it damn activates Siri every single time! It wasn't doing this but has started the last several days. Anyone know what this is or how to make it stop?

Siri has become self aware. It's all over now.

Solved my battery issue:

Location Services --> System Services --> OFF*

* Turned off all features in this category.

The services in this category are used primarily for outgoing data collection to Apple and has little-to-zero effect on your phone's functionality. Time zones are still set, GPS works as intended, compass still calibrates, etc.

I'm only losing about 1-2% per hour now. Hope this helps others.

On the subject of music, is it normal for games and spotify to play sounds through one speaker? Or is my phone broken? Headphones work normally.

If I use the back button in safari, sometimes I get a list of topics from several days ago. Ditto on reddit mobile. Is there some caching setting to fix that?

A bit OT, but how much should I expect to pay for an iPhone 4 (non-s, to save money), used for ATT? And any sites, other than Ebay, to recommend? Might be picking up a pair for my fiance and I to use on Straight Talk. Thanks!

So have you guys seen these?

$43 Glowing Apple Kit

Really tempted....REALLY tempted....

Fuck it. I just bought one (they are selling them on their Facebook page). I wasn't totally sure whether or not I wanted to buy one, or install it, but I knew that I'd regret it the second they stopped selling them after being C&D'd by Apple.

I believe the whole thing is technically a backplate replacement, which does void your warranty, correct? If you have a problem and need to make a warranty claim, you can just put the original one back on and be a-okay, right?

Is there a way to put my phone on silent (no vibrate either)? And can I make it so it doesn't show details on the home screen for texts and emails? So just like who sent me the text.

Yes to the first one: Settings -> Sounds -> At the top you see "Silent" and right underneath that is a VIBRATE switch you can flip from ON to OFF

To the second, no I don't think you can.

I've really kinda hit my stride with the OS. Been about a month now. I'm finally at the point where you just see through the UI and thoughtlessly execute tasks. I'm continually impressed at capable I am with this phone.

For a new page:

Can anyone recommend a pouch-style case for the 4S? I just want something that's easily removable, because I'll only use it during actual transport like when it's in my bag or in my pocket, but it'll probably stay off when I'm at home.

I want something like this, but that still gives me access to the screen when it's on.

There's a text privacy mode. I don't know where it is but my texts only say who texted, not the content.

After a month with the OS, I'm remembering why I switched. Everything feels so disjointed and I can't move from app to app with ease. Android's share menu is so awesome.

I love the iOS apps, though. I'll miss them when my Nexus comes in this week. Still no Tweetbot replacement. Plume is good but it's not on Tweetbot's level.

Yeah. Something really needs to be done about how disjointed iOS is. It sucks.
"in the moment" it really comes together. but, you have to start anew each time you unlock the device. its like those computers they have at public schools where it resets to a fresh disk image every morning.

What use case are you talking about?

Each app just feels siloed. [is that a word?] Rather than one cohesive system with different parts that all work together, it just feels like a bunch of completely independent features/apps that cannot communicate with eachother.

in general im really happy with it though. its just not android. and likewise android just isnt ios.

Anyone know some examples on Amazon of good cases? Not hard cases but also ones that have a protective film/cover over the screen, yet still enables you to do the usual touchy doody. I got a new iPhone yesterday and need to get a case for it.

Can't entirely disagree with that, however anything that's more like a "file" that you need to use between apps I've been able to do without a problem.

Like downloading a zip file in Atomic, unzipping it in Filer and then viewing the unpacked video in Azul. Probably entirely like what you're getting at, but I find that I can create work flows that move items around my devices when it makes sense.

I hear ya, was just curious if there was some kind of workflow in Android that was really missing on the iOS side of things is all. I don't typically use Android devices for more than a few minutes here and there, so I'm nowhere near as versed in what they are truly able to do.

your making something so simple more complex then it is?

If you're referring to me then yes, I am. :lol

Some good recommendations are all I need. The shop I got my phone from were selling cases for ridiculous prices and my search skills on Amazon are useless unless I know from others what to really search for where reliability is concerned.

How are you even downloading a zip file? You can't download stuff on iOS.

Hi guys, would love some advice. I still have an old 3GS model and was thinking of buying a new phone. Where I live the iphone 4S is about 100$ more expensive than the iphone 4. Do you guys think it's worth spending that extra 100?

If you're going to keep the phone more than a year, buy the 4S.

The only thing that really bugs me about iOS is the lack of a filesystem. I don't know the rationale for it, and it doesn't seem like one exists, because I don't think filesystems are really all the complicated for most end users these days.

Hmm.. for some reason I always have huge issues with using third party browsers. But I'll investigate further. I mean, could I download some hot CC-licensed .mp3 file and play it in the music app?

Nope, but you could download that mp3 file, transfer it to your computer through iTunes and then resync it back down to the phone to play through the music app (like what you have to do for ringtones) :lol. It's not a horrible process if you're in your house with WiFi sync, but obviously not at all ideal.

Apple doesn't let you directly save movies or music for use in the official apps unless they came from iTunes.

If you use a different program to play your music files, however, you may be able to do something like that. For instance I used MyTunes for awhile to mess around with EQ heavily and I bet I could have "Open With..." some mp3 files directly into it.
