Steam Winter Sale Gift Obtaining Guide for Santas

For folks that are playing RO2 for the first time, expect to die... a lot. And for the achievement, just follow people that know what they're doing, and try to move through any smoke that's been thrown.

Just played a superb round of Commissar's House before realising I already had the achievement. Some fantastic basement fighting with a dozen blokes on each side, made me forget all about the game's flaws.
 
Just a thought if you want to cheese SpaceChem. Use the worst solutions you can find as in most cycles/symbols. You'll get your achievement and it you won't mess up your learning curve for it. Unless there is a whole meta-game of how inefficiently you can play SpaceChem...
 
It's been ages since I played Psychonauts and I found a save where I could actually go back to the cabin area. How do I make it day? My save was in Black Velvetopia and it's night at the camp and my only save I can get there. It's annoying me =/

There is an easy way to do the Pyschonauts chieve.

First, grab the save file here:

Next, unzip the save file here:

Steam\steamapps\common\psychonauts\Profiles


You will have have to start a new game of pyschonauts to create the Profiles folder. After the profiles folder is created, delete the Profile 1 folder you created with the downloaded profile 1 folder. Then load up the game and continue.

Use psychokinesis to set a squirrel and bird on fire. Once they burn up they'll drop food. Just need to collect one of each for the chieve.

Spiral Knights keeps getting stuck on a black screen. I can just hear people talking over voice chat, but never progress. Servers just getting full or is this an issue I can fix?
 
Bah, I tried getting the Atom Zombie Smasher achievement and it made my computer BSOD, which somehow made my browser's tab list corrupt, making me lose all my tabs. :(

I suck at it too much to get the achievement even without a BSOD though.
 
Ok, finishing up at work. Going to start updating the OP for Day 2. Can we get some quick time estimates on today's set since time is probably the most important category.

What I'm hearing/reading is:

Psychonauts = 5-10 mins with a save
Dredmor - 5-20 mins?
RO2 - 5 mins (you just join a server?)
AI War - 30 mins with a save?
Spiral knights - ___ mins to get 200 crown to enter mode, then __ mins to get achievement
Tropico - ____ mins?

Nearly everything is on this site with ways how to do them.

Spiral Knight's break down like this.

To enter lockdown, you need 200 crowns. Not a large amount. If you win, you get 280, if you lose. you lose the original 200. So you need to do a run or two on normal maps to get the Crowns. About 15-20 minutes should suffice.

Lockdown maps are generated randomly. Each take around 5-10minutes to complete and there is a queue to get in. So its best just to stick in one game and keep saying play again. Its entirely based on lock. Could be your first match, could be your 5th like me. I have 1.1 hours of time on Steam, and I had well more than enough crowns to get in.
 
Dredmor took me about 20 minutes to get on Easy, just by sheer chance I didn't run into any eggs for quite a while. An easy skill path is the pyromancy set, which is reaaal good on first floor for clearing out dudes.

I don't really care to download 5GB of Psychonauts, and without a save, the Psychonauts one seems like it'd take ages.

RO2 can be pretty hard if you're new to the game or if your team isn't up to it. I think I lucked out getting it within such a short time frame. In order to get it, you need to capture a point. You can also do this in an empty server if you care to.
 
Alright, updated with day 2. Tropico is still a bunch of ??s though.


Also cleaned up the formatting a bit. It's not pretty but unless I have the time to print screen and cut/paste banners for each game, it's better to just have a faq style text dump with formatting.


Also Also, I changed the definition of "FUN" category. It now is basically the "GOOD GAME? Y/N" category. Because I think it's a good idea when these games are $5-20 to know if "hey, this is an excellent game worth owning, so I don't mind spending $20 on it for this event" vs. "oh man, I just bought a kusoge for $15 just to get a lump of coal" because the latter feeling sucks while the former is just adding quality titles to your backlog. On ones that are ambiguous in terms of general consensus (like Cargo) I will state as such.

With the helpful tip from a Gaffer, if you want to get Champion Online: Free For All achievement:

Total Time: 30 min to 1 hour
You have to do the prologue before you get to the main city.
Do all the quest til you get to HQ.
Defeat boss. Get to main city.
Go to the Powerhouse and unlock Flight for easy searching.
The present in a location respawn after a certain amount of time. So find a few flying around and comeback to the spot if you can't find any.
What you looking for are Winter Present. You need 10.
Once acquired, head back to the center where you spawned and find other players with out the Winter Cheer buff and use it on them. You have to be close to them.

Maybe the achievement's not active yet? I don't know. It should be an easy one to get. Or maybe you have to actually participate in the battle.

As for Cave Story+, the date trick worked but I didn't get a pop up. It's unlocked in my achievement list but with a ? as the picture still. Oh well at least it's there.

LOL. It will take way longer than that.

Prologue is probably 30 minutes to an hour itself. Presents are based on the Random Gods.

It took me over 2 hours! XD I was having some pretty bad luck with the drops.
 
I can't play Spiral Knights. The game crashes literally 1-5 seconds after starting.

*edit* regediting the game to start fullscreen in native desktop resolution fixed it.
 
Yay, I just got my first daily achievement from Red Orchestra 2. Just to be clear, you need to play multiplayer to get it, the same mission in single player doesn't unlock it. I learned this the hard way. For all the issues the game has, the gunplay is so good. The weapons sound amazing. It's a good achievement since I had fun doing it!

Now I'll get back to the Dungeons of Dredmor achievement. I almost had it earlier, just needed the diggle nog but I killed myself.

Less than that though it depends on save used. If they player saved with ~29.5k ships lost and have them sent on a suicide run then it'll be quicker than having to manually do it yourself.

So total objectives my theory:
14*6=84
Minus 7 for Steam client ones.
another 7 could be free to play (based on spiral knights being day 2; would make sense them alternating).

According to the wiki page if I can count this early in the morning there are 85 achievements (including free to play).

This either means more objectives in later days or games with multiple achievements require you to get them all, get any or just give you more gifts.

If we count games my count is 72. This means there are 5 mystery games. IIRC we know of 4 free to play games so 3 of these mystery titles could also be free to play.

Any thoughts?

Yea you can buy a gift and store it in your Steam inventory for use later. While buying you should choose the 'purchase as a gift' option and it will let you either send the email immediately, or keep it in your inventory.
 
The Spiral Knights achievement isn't working for me. I must have hit about 20 people with snowballs now and it still hasn't popped up.
 
The Tropico 4 achievement takes a lot of time, 2 hours and I could only get 400 population on an easy sandbox map.

It's a pretty good game though.
 
Getting that achievement just reminded me of how much I love RO2 and need to play more. The map for the achievement is terrible though, lol.

Then I look at my backlog screaming obscenities at me!

Also: AI War was a bitch as I couldn't get it to register, then when I was going to give up the wiki updated with a new save file that worked literally perfectly with no effort at all, and no DLC required. Seriously, needs to be in the OP:

They fucked up the game for me, it worked perfectly a month or so ago, now that I tried to play it for the first time in a month it kept crashing 1 sec into joining a mp game. Sigh.

Got coal 6 times and then played the achievement for Dungeons of Dredmor of all things and got the Oddboxx :) Was hoping to trade with someone, but he hasnt gotten back to me yet.
