Refreshing. Just ran an old cheese strat with BH. Worked.

Man my timing is so off... but I think it's my shit comp. Looking forward to running it on my new Macbook Pro when I get Win7 for Christmas.

So 'kirby's crazy control scheme' is gaining traction. And soon, you will all buy track ball mice, Bwhahahahaha.

But really, why are you all going with it now? I did it back in LoL because people kept complaining about my map awareness, and I found that having the move map keys bound to WASD helped with that.

Anyone have this problem and can help me?

I used to be able to play fine but now when I start DOTA 2, it goes to the main menu and the metal doors at the center of the interface close and no menus come up when I hit play, learn, etc. except for the settings menu and that's it. I have no clue what to do.

That usually happens when the servers are down, but they aren't right now. Try verifying your files, has anything about your internet connection changed recently?

I haven't played DOTA before (only a couple of matches of lol) so this is probably a stupid question, but what do you map the W skill to?

No, I verified and same thing is happening. I keep trying and nothing works and this is the only time my friend is in town on leave so we want to play and of course now would be the time it doesn't work..lmao

Murphy's law for me. Bad physical therapy followed by a dead GPU fan and shit like this, lol.

Nothing has changed so maybe I'll resort to downloading it again if I can't fix it tonight.

What do you use for items then Kirby?

I'm thinking I might do a modified version of Kirby's controls, or at the very least give it a try. This is what I'm thinking

WASD = camera
123456 = items
ZXCVFG = skills

Edit: Forgot about Attack Move and Stop, I'll put those on Q and E.

I use the F Key I use the lower row for control groups. I can hit F1 and F2 pretty easily for spells that get spammed a lot. Plus, I use half of what would be the item keys for other commands (C is Courier, V is Voice, B is Buy)

This causes a bit of a problem with Chen though, where I need 3 control groups. Maybe I'll just man up and bind the courier to something else.

Cheese strats are so much fun (when you win).

Broodmother, Nature's Prophet, Enigma, Death Prophet, and Shadow Shaman. All push, all the time. We didn't win as quickly as we needed to, but we raxed them thrice and took the throne, only losing our T1s and T2s in exchange.

Mouse = Camera
QWER = Skills

Being able to both target and change what part of the map you are looking at simultaneously is just so nice. Plus, you don't have the slight delay from when you are rapidly changing which side of the mouse the screen is on. Panning left and then quickly right is a pain, the map is still for a good fifth of a second. For me, the mouse is use exclusively for targeting, I change my view with the keyboard/minimap.

How experienced are you? In Dota, or hon.. or LoL? Just wondering.

So what are you guys doing with your mouse, just constantly targeting?

I just tried the new scheme for a few minutes in the control scheme and I liked it so far, but I kept falling into the habit of using my mouse for the camera.

My only issue with using the mouse to move it is that I always felt like I ended up moving my camera too much or too little to click somewhere, so the action I wanted to see wasn't very much in my view. It's a hard feeling to describe really, but it happens to me in every RTS I play. This is honestly the first time I've ever tried using the keyboard to move my camera.

A little thing I've tried that I find quite nice is to use the / key for the courier. Usually when I'm calling for the courier, I don't really need the mouse that split second, so I can easily take my hand off of it to hit the / key, followed by the keys for picking up what's in my stash and bringing it to me. Hell I'm even able to pull that off in the middle of frantically clicking now.

Adjust your sensitivity and get yourself a nice mousepad. Problem solved.
I was gonna suggest maybe upping sensitivity, but OC beat me to it. Don't your fingers sometimes get confused during a big fight, like you try to hit a skill on Q W E R but it's not bound to that anymore, I guess with time it would be easy to get accustomed to, just odd to me.

It is definitely something that will take some getting used to, which is why I'm going to just try it for a bit before I decide to commit to it. I guess it's like the QWERTY vs DVORAK: One is technically better but everyone just uses the other one because they know it.

I just don't know why you need super precise map control with the keyboard. Team fights are usually confined to a whole screen, and that's the only time you'd need to frantically move the camera.

;_;

come back so we can play

I've also noticed I've developed this strange habit of clicking twice in this game when moving over a long distance (like from spawn to my lane at the beginning of a match). I have no idea why I started doing this, I just do it. This control scheme obviously won't change that though.

Twice? you'll be doing it alot more once you're used to the game O_O lol

About 500 games in LoL, 100 in Dota 2, like 20 minutes in HoN.

It does for the first 10 or 20 hours, but you grow out of it. But I changed my bindings about 150 games into LoL, and never looked back, so it wasn't like I had years of mussel memory to over come, just a few months.

Sometimes it's twice, other times it's more than that. I guess it's just when I'm walking around during laning and I click everywhere. Even on the same spot multiple times, like it will somehow help me move faster there even though it won't.

I guess in a situation where your trying to escape and you don't want to move the camera then click and have your hero stop moving? Like those situations where your moving the camera, clicking the edge while you try and see if that's a safe spot to go?
come back so we can play
I was just listening to that song lol, but vacation time and I don't wanna install windows on my MacbookPro.
too busy partying and buying new shoes probably.
New Years Resolution is to stop spending money on frivolous things

I do this too, lots and lots, only exception is when I'm trying to attack something, but I guess when I animation cancel it's kinda the same thing, but yeah when I'm moving somewhere I click constantly, keeps me kinda engaged cause I often get tempted to look somewhere else while pathing, and I've often died while doing that.

Actually, I have to get out of the habit of clicking a spot a long distance away multiple times. There is one spot in the lower part of the river going towards mid where my character will just keep walking back and forth between two paths because somehow the game keeps thinking the other way is then the shortest path.

When they start moving, people run, people chase, people retreat, the map scrolls the same speed as with the mouse, but you have a faster "reaction time", so you can just keep up with the flow easier. Also, I make heavy use of the Center Hero command.

I like it on the left, I changed the side in LoL long before I ever noticed every other game in the Genera has it as the default. The change will likely come later, but I think Valve is putting the bulk of efforts into implementing all 100 characters, and then will polish up the rest of the experience.

i'm so bad at this game
Nah there wasn't much you could do in that situation, but you need to be mindful of your positioning in relation to Juggernaut, especially with the lich in lane.

You shoulda ran uphill and stunned though, when he was being chased by Slardar

You should stun more! Lots of opportunities, for example when he was running from the top rune towards your ancients, and you didn't stun to help him.

But if you had the option wouldn't you take it? It doesn't make anything different, and personally, I honestly think it makes controlling the game more fluid and dynamic. It free ups time for you to be moving the camera and targeting at the same time with much more precision. Like say when your chasing people it can help a lot.

I had like a 1-2 week adjustment period for it when I started playing HoN. But I've been using WASD in RTS's for years, so it got used to it really quick. Like back since CnC Generals or something.
You guys would probably take ages to get used to it since QWER is muscle memory for you. QERF is muscle memory for me now.

Also I wouldn't do it unless I could bind Attack and Hold to my mouse, that's a huge help because it moves some of the other key binds I needed to my mouse.

i dunno what happened there

I'm just so bad at this game,
GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY WITH PROGAMERS.

I have the weirdest setup. Space for stop, V for attackmove, X to select my hero, QERF + 1 and 2 for skills, G and 3-5 + Side mouse buttons for items. WASD is useful when you're in a high-speed chase, especially as, say, Slardar. The era of being juked is over, mang.

The more I play Dota 2, the more I want to switch to WSAD layout. Still remember how awesome was World in Conflict because of its FPS-a-like key setup. The only thing that stops me is a time to get used to it.
