PlayStation Vita Japanese Launch Thread. "APOCALYPTIC!" says concerned Nuclear Muffin

I tried to get a couple of PSP games on my Vita using my UK account but it can't see them. Is this normal? Do you think this will be sorted at launch?

I presume the Japanese Vita can see PSP games purchased on the Japanese Store?

The loading is likely due to the way things are stored. Old cartridge systems were all memory mapped so the systems had instant access to the data required. That is not the case here.

Same deal with 3DS, really, as many games have pretty significant loading times. Still faster than a disc in most cases (though Ridge Racer 3D loads slower than Ridge Racers from UMD).

I'd say that's due more to the lack of polishing of the game than to the nature of the media it's stored in. I have a number of 3DS games and the only one that has those awful loadings is RR, the rest have nearly insta-loading (especially SM3DL, from the console menu to be actually playing there are probably less than 20 seconds, it loads QUICK).

woah, high five man

Secretive GP fan *hides Canoo* ;)

Yup, it's good for fans to judge Vita by a high standard. Multi account support would be idea though i can see why it hasn't happened.

had a canoo myself - only a couple of weeks ago traded for a mini arcade cabinet with mame etc lol

yeah, can't wait to get a vita - such a great bit of hardware :)

Don't think it works yet -- I was trying to transfer US PSP games from my PS3 to my Vita and it wasn't working, sent a tweet to @yosp, he said US games aren't supported until US launch. I'm assuming the same is true for UK games.

Alright thanks. Looks like I'll be importing more Vita games.

I read that it was possible in another forum. Here are the steps he gave:
*steps*

Those steps sound a bit wonky as you don't "activate USB connection" and like you know, the Vita takes over the PS3, so downloadinganything from the store while it's connected is impossible. Also "selecting copy" from the menu is also impossible due to the same reason.

It's magic! The menu icon overlaps GAF reply button. That is annoying.

Sorry for the Off-topic, but even though I'm aware this is the main reason for the typical mistyping of the "r" and the "l" in Japanese - Chinese - Korean language speakers I've always thought it's BS. When you learn a word, you should learn its written form exactly as it is. So when there is an "l", type an "l" and not an "r" even though you can't tell the difference by sound. I feel something is not going well in the way most Asian people learn foreign languages, because this kind of (otherwise simple) errors are commonplace.

I swear I'll never understand this problem.

Many people write things down they way they hear it, not they way they read it. Otherwise you wouldn't have tons of a american speakers write 'shouldn't of' and others 'definitaly'.

I would say it's a problem of poor education. I expect prefssional company to know better, or at least hire people with certain proficiency.

I don't doubt that, and when we are writing "tongue in cheek" like we are doing here now, it's not a problem. Hell, I am quite prone to commit typing errors, especially when I'm writing in a foreign language for me.

Anyway, when you're actually writing something that's going to be released to the public, well, then there's no excuse for bad grammar.

mattfab, japanese keyboards have "r" and "l" as well. I think people just doesn't read anymore so they don't know how to write properly. Anyway, no more ranting from me.

I don't disagree at all it is the kind of mistakes people and especially companies shouldn't make - I simply thought Loonz was saying that it was illogical / didn't make sense that the mistake was made at all.

Is much difficult to write a word when you are not used to differenciate between the sounds. You cannot memorize the syntax of all the words in any language, in most cases, you write them naturally because it fits the sound.

For example, in a lot of languages that there are no differenciation between J/G or V/B, is very easy to confuse and have a letter instead of another. If japanese don't have different sounds for R/L, is normal to have that mistakes. For us, that differenciate easily R/L, it's easy. But a lot of spanish people mistake V/B or J/G, even being natives in the language, because they sound the same. A translator probably will have even more problems. But, yes, obviously a pro should double-check that things, even when the result is a word that don't exist.

There is no excuse for the wrong spelling of anything, you have things called 'Spell checkers". I have heard they can be quite useful.

Whether or knot yew use a spell chequer hardly insures a propriate spelling. The simplest solution, of course, would be to have a native Anglo-speaker edit the translation before it's coded... certainly, most spelling and grammer mistakes would be found in a simple review of the text.

Finally had that "Eureka moment" while playing with the interface, went ahead and created some preliminary theme tools.

I even went ahead and threw together a quick test theme. Quite literally, THREW together, from the old MGS4 theme. The only issue now being it is fairly tedious to put things into place, however it DOES allow for nice, progressively changing themes, since each "page" can be skinned separately.

I suppose this could be a 'hello world' of sorts.

I would kill to edit those icons. Good lord.

That is so awesome. Can't wait to see your stuff!

When you write code, there is no spell checker.

If you're coding something that is supposed to be translated into different languages and you have translations embedded into the code and not easily pluggable or editable and checkable, that's quite far from the ideal way of coding things.

That congraturations could be an image file instead of a string of characters being shown though, but even then, it's weird it happens with a company as big as Sega that probably has enough resources to translate games into different languages.

You don't write the text on code, text is usually in a external database.

Unless you are Notch and code Minecraft, of course...

Well, I only do scientific computing for small scale simulations. Usually all the text I need are in the code itself, but there isn't much text anyways. So I guess I just made the wrong assumption there. Carry on.

Bought Minna no Golf 6 (card) and Katamari (digital) today. Golf looks a bit blurry, so not on full res I think. Haven't checked that from this thread. Could easily be native res as it doesn't look that taxing for the system. Like the game.
Katamari looks really sharp and nice, and I haven't played any of the other versions, so don't know what is the difference. Don't really care either. Has a lot of nice screens that I snapped to be my Vita wallpapers.

Language talk has gotten out of hand. :)

That's awesome man! Can't wait to see what you make when you have plenty of time.

I had expected people to kind of make wallpaper based upon the bubble locations.
It's nice they can be moved as needed for this kind of thing.

Two questions I haven't seen answered anywhere, both involving PS+.

Are there any plus discounts for any of the Vita games through the store?

And is there cloud data storage enabled for the Vita and if so how does it exactly work? Can you transfer saves in between Vitas (seems very unlikely) and saves in between PS3/Vita games (not sure if any of the current games actually do this)

I've read that the Vita supports 720P video, is this correct?

So in theory the rips I've made of my own movies on my NAS that play on the PS3 should also play on the Vita?

Vita supports mpeg4 profile 3 at max 320x240 and mpeg4avc/h.264 profile 3.1at max 720p. I watched the new Louis c.k. video bought from his webpage on vita at 720p so those work just fine.

That is so cool. Already looks so much better than the original theme.

Had no probs with mario kart, mario 3d land etc.

Mh3g seems to have loading time but thats pretty fast too from what ive seen.

Japanese keyboards also have kana on them

Sony is surely going to put out a new firmware before western release. There are a few nagging things I have currently.

- The browser is currently very limited because there is not a lot of support for even the basic stuff. Even videos posted on sony blogs don't work so not going to read those from Vita. Update clearly needed.
- There are some random, but luckily rare glitches when booting a software. Sometimes Vita says "the file is corrupted" and doesn't start e.g. Minna to isshoni, or twitter app. Booting the device removed that problem. Only has appeared twice during the week of testing.
- There are no controls for video sizes, so my mis-rendered, 4:3 or other videos cannot be blown to fullscreen size. No creation of movie frame for the video, if it doesnt have one. No looping of a single video, only play everything once.
- Live spaces show progress in game, but it doesn't show all of them, just recent ones, so you can't backtrack on everything you did.
- When downloading stuff from PSN store, and you don't have enough space on the memory card, Vita shows a random error screen instead of telling "not enough space".
- The wifi power saving makes it confusing to know when you are online and when not.
- You can accidentally put the usb cable upside down on the Vita.
- Vita takes over the PS3 totally when connected via USB so no using the PS3 which is not convenient. I would like to transfer stuff, and do something else on the ps3 during that time.

Not all very important but needs to be cleared. I still love the device a lot and I can see this being a hit in the west easily, but these small things need to be fixed.

This is why i am glad that we did not get the VITA as the same time as Japan.

This list is pretty telling. You should send it to someone just in case. Post it on JP site/blog or the Beta forum.

That's more than likely a PS3 limitation.

That's more than likely a PS3 limitation.

Should not be as using an external HDD is easier than this. Like the simplicity of it, that you only plug in and you handle everything else from the Vita by just tapping the screen, but there are these limitations. Why can't I access the PS3 straight using wifi?

If they implement the PS3 Vita connectivity like a background download thread, then perhaps the PS3 can multitask while Vita is connected.

But if they implement the Vita connectivity as a full app/process, then the entire PS3 will be tied up.
