Is there a good grip for the 3DS? aka my hands hurt after using this thing

41Jwg31083L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

^ That's the grip I got sometime around when the system launched. While it's a comfortable grip for the most part, I don't think it's ideal for using the d-pad. Well I should phrase it, it isn't really ideal for me and my hands. When I want to use mainly the d-pad while playing the older DS titles, I feel the grip could've been better in that regard, at least for me.

That looks really nice.

EDIT: YESASIA have it for $20. I might bite just to test it out.

YESASIA? Why didn't I think to check that site?

hmm $21.99 plus shipping that's more than double what I would've wanted to spend on a grip. Before I even consider ordering one, I'll have to think about it awhile.

But honestly, it really does look like a very comfortable grip to me

Ah, fuck it. I've ordered it. If you still haven't made up your mind by the time it arrives I'll post my impressions.

My hands took a few days to adjust after Mario Kart came out and I was gripping it oddly on the button side. I just naturally adjusted and stopped holding it so tight.

System is not comfortable to hold though, which is sad. I'd rather have it look odd, but hold well
like a Gamecube controller, please

Has anyone seen a good case for the 3ds? Iv looked everywhere. Target, BestBuy, gamestop, ToysRus. But nothing.

Either they are too big, too expensive, don't zip up all the way, or have velcro (I hate velcro on cases).

Looking for something that zips up completely, and convenient. Not like this other crap that comes with 30 accessories and ugly as puke.
Its strange. I found a DSlite case for $9 that was perfect. But all these 3ds cases are complete garbage.

Amazon.co.jp has it listed as in stock and ready to ship

BLACK
- BLUE - RED - WHITE

BUT IT SAYS ON THE PRODUCT PAGE THEY WON'T SHIP IT OUTSIDE OF JAPAN.

You could probably use a shipping forwarding service or something.

Is there really no other place to get those from?

I've had to stop using my Zelda 3DS until I get a circle pad grip because Nintendo seem to have cut corners with the rubber on that model and the circle pad turns a nasty blue colour when it starts wearing down a little bit.

I generally keep my fingers spread across the whole back of the device, as opposed to scrunched up on the sides. It's really not that different from how I held the original model GBA, then later lamented the lack of hand space when I got an SP.

The SP was a step backward, IMO. You held it a lot like a Gameboy Pocket, which is not a good thing.

That said, I love love love love love the 3DS' ergonomics. The face buttons are in exactly the right place, the d-pad is surprisingly accessible and feels great, and the Circle Pad is my single favorite part of a Nintendo controller in years since it lacks the 8-way feeling of every Nintendo analog stick since the N64.

Keep in mind that you may not be able to close the 3DS with that rubber pad on top of the slide pad.
Isn't that a good thing because of the screen scratching issue?

Did you already look at the Hori cases on Amazon?

The circle pad pro may take a bit to get used to if you use any of the 3rd party grips. Most of those grips add space between your thumb and the button on both sides, CPP doesn't add much to the left side. Until you get used to it it'll feel a little awkward, and you'll break the 3D more often because the center of the 'controller' is no longer the center of the 'screen.' After a few hours of use it's fine, and it's certainly been a great addon for MH.

About the circle pad pro R button not working with old games, wouldn't that be something they can fix through a software update to the 3ds itself?

what's stopping them from fixing it that way?

I'm sure the game itself would have to be patched, not the 3DS.

but why? Can't you simply program the system to recognize the r button input from the circle pad and feed it to the game the way it would recognize it?

yes, I know this is a very non technical way to think about it but I would like to have someone explain to me why it can't work this way.

I guess it depends on the programming architecture of the 3DS. If the games get their control input data from the 3DS' OS, then a patch should fix the issue. If their is no buffer between the user's input and the game, then each game has to be patched individually.

I wouldn't worry to much about. I mean think about it, the 3DS has sold how many units now and the amount of people complaining about it happening has gone down. You'd think if it was really that big an issue that more people would have encountered it by now.

I've carried mine in my back pocket, no case or anything and its not had anything worse than removable smudges.

Also I have those circle pad covers and 2 or 3 of them are pretty nice but the rest I think are kinda useless. I recommend them.

I got a 3DS for Christmas and I came here to look for not only game advice but for advice on some grips and I got exactly that thanks guys. I think I'll probably go with the Hori Mario Kart "wheel" as it looks like the most comfortable.

I'm with you guys though there hasn't been a real comfortable handheld IMO since the Game Gear (I know its a giant brick but it never caused my hand to cramp up).

i have the same problem too, so i've narrowed it down to these 3:

anyone have any recommendations/personal experience with the above mentioned grips?

The 3DS Hand Grip works fine for me. Without it I can play the 3DS for 10 minutes, then man hands start to hurt. With it, I can play for a few hours with no pain what so ever.

Edit: I think I'm going to get the Hori wheel grip. A user posted their positive impressions in the Mario Kart 7 OT.
OK, here are some more impressions on the 3DS wheel.

The most important part of the design for me are the bits that stick out at the bottom, the "horns" as I will call them. These "horns" actually give the last three fingers (other than your index finger and thumb) on each hand something to hold on to, and prevent the corners of the device sticking into your palms. It totally removes the palm pain, as well as the possibility of getting pins and needles - at least in my situation.

The shoulder triggers are a nice bonus, and have almost as much movement as the standard triggers - definitely no more movement than the standard as they simply press the standard triggers. They are hinged towards the middle of the unit which means they feel more responsive towards where your fingers are. They have a different feel and size, which can take a small amount of getting used to.

The circumference of the unit is good. All in all the wheel a couple of cm less wide compared to the Wii wheel. The thickness of the grip itself is slightly fatter than the Wii wheel. The curve of the grip is rounded on the back side of the wheel, and flat on the front.

You put the 3DS into the wheel shoulder buttons first, and there is some soft rubber to make the unit fit perfectly just above the "horns". All in all, it's excellent. Everything you would expect from an officially licences peripheral, and up to Hori's high standards.

One last thought: I think this makes the game feels more like a home console game rather than a handheld, which is a nice side effect.

Here's a comparison photo 3DS wheel vs. Wii wheel:

so it has a mechanism for the shoulder buttons?

the biggest problem with DS/PSP grips are the odd placement of the shoulder buttons for the grips. It ends up feeling like you're playing with the 360 bumpers.

Yes.
My 3DS wheel arrived today. Really great fit and build quality, it even provides bigger L and R triggers.

Looks like a massive improvement. I already ordered one, though Amazon won't get it here until the 29th. :\ Looks like I won't be playing Ace Combat until then.

wow, thanks. this is what I've wanted since...2004.

if only the bottom wasn't curved inward. That could be awkward, but w/e...I could always cut that part off of it's too bad.

is that wheel holdster really that comfortable? i don't really find the wiimote wheel compartment too comfortable but i'm not really sure if that's even comparable. but i just ordered this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UBSR46/?tag=neogaf0e-20 so i was wondering if i should cancel it and go with the HORI... decisions, decisions. anyone else have any experience at all with that wheel grip for the 3ds?

I was about to order that until I learned of the shoulder button thing

I'll try and post impressions and pictures when it comes in 3 or 4 days

...the Circle Pad Pro isn't a grip, it adds additional buttons.

Do keep in mind that the system's original R button is a bit out of reach so anything that needs the R button that doesn't support the Circle Pad Pro will be nigh unplayable.
The review I read said the R button was most definitely reachable and fully usable in games.

Where the Circle Pad Pro isn't good as a grip is the fact that it covers up both the cartridge slot and the stylus, meaning you have to remove the whole device to switch games, and can't store your stylus in the 3DS and have access to it.

hmm, what shoulder button thing?

I mean on the Hori Wheel, not that silicone grip.

there seems to be a mechanism to move the shoulder buttons further back into a more natural position (for me, as it's more like the triggers on a 360 controller, instead of the bumpers).

well, i just canceled the other order and instead opted for this one. hope it's good!

experimenting with the wii wheel i realized my middle and ring finger were in a pretty comfortable position if i put them similarly to the way it looks like they are in the picture so i'm pretty sure this will work out.

I'm back, the grip hasn't arrived yet though. I'm hoping it'll arrive soon.

EDIT: I also bought the circle pad pro and I can reach the R button easily, I always use it for playing Mario Kart and find it far more comfortable using it than without.

thirded, especially one that makes the d-pad usable.

I saw this on Amazon but don't know how it is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UBSR46/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I bought this grip after seeing it here, and it is one of the better 3DS investments I've made. It is much more comfortable with than without. The face buttons and circle-pad fit better under my thumbs, and the L/R buttons are easier to reach. It shapes and directs your grip better than the big square corners. Very nice.
