Heard about the captcha thing a while ago. The best part is that it's supposed to be a test for some words that OCR couldn't figure out, so if you find a dirty word that seems out of place while reading an ebook, you'll know where it comes from...

reCAPTCHA comic

don't do that

To archive human knowledge and to make information more accessible to the world, multiple projects are currently digitizing physical books that were written before the computer age. The book pages are being photographically scanned, and then transformed into text using "Optical Character Recognition" (OCR). The transformation into text is useful because scanning a book produces images, which are difficult to store on small devices, expensive to download, and cannot be searched. The problem is that OCR is not perfect.

reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher.

someone post the story about how 4chan exploited recaptcha in the same way to adjust time's online poll of person of the year so that #1 was moot.

then post about how the first letter of each winner from 1-20 or whatever spelled youlostthegame - or whatever it was it spelled

i was slightly in awe at the ridiculous amount of effort that was put out to do that

After reading the Captcha tech on that Google page, I have to say I'm pretty impressed with what they've done.

It gives us sometimes funny pics and it also helps create digital books!
