I picked up both after listening to you guys in this thread. Alien was awesome and tense. I wasn't feeling Aliens all that much, especially watching it right after Alien. Maybe if I watch it a 2nd time I'll get a better feel for it.

It was certainly more interesting than the retreads of Aliens they had planned. I rolled my eyes at all the crappy talk of uniting the colonies to engage in this big epic war with the aliens.

That's the kind of thing you sometimes see in screenplays. The screenwriter is just trying to paint a pretty clear picture for the director and actors. The descriptive prose is relatively unimportant.
see this is what i thought. i still don't get it. wouldn't a wooden planet need some sort of... core or something to create gravity? did they just carve the planet out of some huge avatar tree? do they have a gravity generator, and wouldn't that defeat the purpose of living without technology or whatever?
i can at least understand space prison, especially since there was continent prison in real life.
I'm sure it used artificial gravity or whatever. I guess it's out of sight, out of mind for them.
Can someone please explain to me why all James Cameron films of the era look like they're shot on video, rather than film? I'm watching it on blu ray right now and it looks like a high-budget TV show rather than something intended for cinema.

That's odd - I thought Aliens only looked marginally worse than Alien, and that's keeping in mind that Alien looks like it was filmed yesterday. A little grainer and a little noisier, but ultimately still a really great transfer. Though I suppose you're talking about how it's shot rather than the quality of the transfer. Maybe I need to watch it again.

It doesn't look like TV/video at all though, tbh. Just smoother looking motion. (referring to the Cameron usage, I'm not sure if that's actually an effect of the film or not)

For Aliens Cameron used a relatively new film stock that ended up being more grainy than normal, and was eventually discontinued. It was not in production for long. I don't know what was up with the stock in T2.

Lol. Just my opinion guys, sorry but the first does nothing for me. After rewatching the first on Blu Ray recently, it still does not do anything for me. There are definitely some parts that I like of course, but generally, I don't much care for it. Special Edition Aliens 2 last night was a joy. Especially when that epic music kicks it as Ripley is about to close the hatch at the end.
Aliens 3 has always been my favourite. I love the whole idea of a prison full of scum end up banding together to fight this thing head on. I like the characters, the story, the relationship between Ripley and Dillion, and the music too. It's just a more moving film, and that's why I like it more. Same with Aliens.
I absolutely acknowledge why Alien is such a classic and is so cherished, it changed the genre. But I don't share the love for it as a film such.

I have the first two on Blu, but I haven't had the chance to see them. I tend to only watch movies with friends, but they're being assholes and don't want to watch them.
Watch them alone in a dark room with the telephone unplugged. Thank me later.
I kinda feel the same.
Scary movies are best watched alone at midnight with the lights off.

Got me the Alien Anthology set yesterday. Watched Alien, most of the Alien 3 documentary (which is awesome), and going to watch the extended/workprint cut of Alien 3 tonight. I have mixed feelings about Alien 3... like most everyone else I'm not a huge fan of the story and what it did to some pretty major characters, but I love the downer ending and the way it was directed. Fincher did a really good job all things considered and his style really came though.
All the Fox meddling... ugh, it's like they suddenly forgot that if the movie is good, people will see it (most of the time). They just wanted to slap something cheap together with the "Alien" name on it but brand will only get you so far. It was a lost opportunity, though in almost every A3 script I've read none of them came up with a good explanation of why there'd be an alien on the Sulaco :/

Same here. I've always liked it and seen it more then the others. There's something about that stark claustrophobic environment and gunless. Terrifying.

I'm about to watch Aliens 3 on Blu Ray now, I hope it looks as lovely as Aliens did. Can't wait to see what Alien Resurrection looks like. Say what you will about it as a film, I remember it looking great back in the day on DVD, and I suspect it'll look purdy on Blu Ray too.

Alien 3 (the assembly cut at least) is actually kind of good and a decent ending for the series. There are a few problems such as no decent characters outside of Ripley, Roc and Tywin Lannister. Everyone else is pretty much just there and most of them you can't tell apart (apart from Mr. Postlethwaite RIP). The assembly cut is also a bit too long, but still a lot better than the cut up theatrical edition.
Anyway, it's pretty good. Serves up the idea that everyone that comes into contact with these aliens just winds up dead in one way or another (well except for that one random inmate, he should have died). Alien is clearly the best of the series with Aliens being pretty awesome and Alien 3 assembly cut lagging behind. Alien Resurrection is complete shit.
