Gamer Girls Taking A Stand in thought provoking youtube video

If I lived my life in such a way that people could accredit the quote "cosplay = foreplay" to my name, I think I would have to take a long and deep inventory of my lifestyle choices.

I'm a gamer.

...

wow, indeed

Just wait until next gen, where "gamer" is the new "hipster" and people start carrying around controllers as accessories.

Doesn't that already happen, to an extent? Like those shitty Space Invaders sweatshirts from Hot Topic people wore six years ago when I was in high school. She definitely wasn't a gamer. Teehee.

I dunno, the video itself was playing to the double standards it says it's against. You can't have it both ways. Just play the game and mute creepy people/assholes.

I'm a gamer.

Me and the girlfriend were looking at the site and the conclusion she reached is that the girl is being ironic calling herself "sexy", because she is so absolutely not sexy it is impossible that she is not being non-sexy on purpose.
So I don't know, if she is being ironic, I give her some points. There's no way really she thinks she seducing anyone.

Xbox Live is a waste ground filled with antisocial manchildren living out power fantasies to compensate for the lack of anything going on in real life.

I sympathise with these girls to some degree, but there's a reason why I, even as a white, straight, atheist male, don't play randoms on Live.

Ahaha. Violin? For me. Naaahhh.

I'm just observing that a lot of people are so quick to bash someone's opinion, but they may not have actually been in that position themselves. I'd say half the time women spend playing games online they're called every degrading and derogatory name in the book. The other half, they're getting creepy and unnecessary messages. Like Aeana even said, going to a store, Gamestop or just visiting the games section of a regular department store, people are quick to judge and in disbelief to learn that you're buying yourself a game.

One of the reasons I loved going to E3 and Comic Con was that no one there gives a shit if you're a man/woman, we're all there because we love nerdy things and are excited to try new gadgets out.

It is pretty damn offputting how hard she's trying in that specific image. I didn't go to the website, though.

And enjoy the freedom of not showering for days.

LOL ew. Yet, I'm positive some people went that route.

I know some of you are saying "mute those MFers", but really, why should anyone have to mute someone? In a realistic world we wouldn't have to deal with such bad online communities, but that's beyond wishful thinking. Even though I'm primarily on the PS3, I do have to commend the Xbox Live Party Chat system, as I think it's a great way to just play games and have fun with your friends.

That's exactly what I hear! Ask any girl gamers you know or try to play online with girls every once and while. It's sickening, and it's immediate. Every time.

Just out of my own curiousity, have you ever had someone tell you that they would kill you because your a girl while gaming? I know a few of my friends of different races that have had death threats thrown their way because of their race while doing so.

This whole argument is beyond imagining in my opinion, the fact that people are actually fighting about wether Sexism, or Racism are worse then the other is mind numbing. They are both inexcusable, disgusting, and carry the same weight of negativity.

It's Ironic that you would tell someone to "Grow the fuck up" about feeling the exact same thing that you do, only in their case the issue does not matter to you because they are not a "girl", and it's not "Sexism", so it's obviously not as a big a deal.

I agree, the party chat is great. But the mute tool is by far one of my favorite Live implementations. I'm a loose cannon with that thing.

When playing online on my gf's account(like I detailed in my above post) I simply mute anyone who sends any verbal hate my way, and I go on living my life knowing happily that that ass hole is now essentially talking to a wall.

Wow that video.. From my experiences girls can be just as rude and annoying as guys. We just don't go making youtube videos about it. There is a mute and a block for good reason for both sides.

You could go pubbing at any given time with little to no bullshit even with voice enabled. I got more shit for sounding young then I did for being a girl.

yeah this is what my sister says, it's more often people assume because of her voice that she's a young boy instead of 28 year old woman, and rag on her for it.

it's more just filled with assholes than anything that specific.

also i hate party chat, now if i want to find someone to play with online they are either mute or idiots.

Thanks everyone for reminding me why I stopped playing randoms in online FPS with voice chat years ago. Even as a stupid teenager I was freaking embarrassed at the idea of associating with those petty, screaming, omniphobic manchildren. And I'm a straight white male with a nice voice.

I now declare that you can't call yourself a real gamer if you play online FPS or WoW.
Real gamers play forever alone*.

*Fighting games and Starcraft 2 being the notable exception.

It's different because the specific nature and intensity of vitriol, in addition to being insulting, carries a heavy element of misogyny that other groups do not get nearly as much. The insults I hear aimed towards female gamers are designed to get them to feel like they don't belong in this world and shouldn't be playing in the first place. "This is for men and men only, and you should be doing something else, also, make me a sandwich, and get back in the kitchen." The combination is what makes the comments that much more oppressive, and, I think, noteworthy.

Everyone is "insulted' online, but only one group is so consistently and universally made to feel like their hobby shouldn't belong to them.
Except this isn't exclusive to men. Other women do this too, I've seen this in WoW raiding guilds plenty of times. One friend who I've pretty much raided with for 2 years hates other female raiders because from her experience most girls that try to use their gender to benefit from it. I've known her better than many of the other female raiders that have come and gone in that time but for the most part, 4 out of 5 of them are exactly that, or if anything say they don't want to be treated specially then go ahead and try to become the an officer's/raid leader's "best friend" (though that may just have to do with the social structure of MMOs, unless we want to delve into that discussion).

Isn't that true tho? Most girls don't play games, at least in my experience.
I tried to lure every one of my past (and current!) gfs without success (they've always respected my passion tho), I must be very unlucky then.
I don't want some WOW playing/super hardcore gamer gf (I wouldn't mind the latter, but without eccess of course) but it'd be nice to have 'em play some Mario Wii/Kart with me from time to time. But hey, 95% of my male friends don't play games (or they don't anymore) anyway :/ :shrugs:
Most girls these days probably do play games, but they will not identify themselves as "gamers". I for sure do not know what percentage that do identify as such and what percentage of that go and use a public forum to espouse their identity and issue a call-to-arms as such. (i.e. the intent in the video in the OP). Probably a really small minority.

Video games are pretty much ubiquitous these days, so the chance a girl with access to facebook or a smartphone, if not a tablet or something, has not played a video game is simply laughable.

I made it to about 30 seconds before i wanted to strangle each and every one of them. You have a vagina!@! GREAT!! Someone should give you a placard or a nice gift basket.

I'm sure she dumped her boyfriend so she could call it her eXbox, because she's a GRRL GMR! ^_^

This girl is so... ugly. What the fuck is wrong with her face?

What's wrong?

She looks like Michael Palin cross dressing is what:

I think for some gamers it's the idea that their habitual lifestyles and their own insecurities about themselves have made them reject the notion that girls can be gamers and act hostile towards them, because they feel that society (and girls as an extension of that) reject them and want to distance themselves as much as possible from the gamers' life. I do admit I've been shocked to find, after years of feeling like a social reject, that some of my real life female friends - the really attractive ones who have fashion sense and know how to present themselves in public, the opposite of me - also turned out to be really good, avid gamers too. That was a definite eye opener and really helped me get over a lot of my inferiority complex, as well as learn not to make such assumptions anymore. Trouble is that's not something that can be easily overcome in an environment that's proven to be largely immoral, such as TEH INTERNETS.

Many campaigns where girl gamers flaunt their gaming prowess and their gender have a bullish "I'm actually much better than you" attitude that doesn't make anything better; if they were so interested in that eternally sought utopia known as "equality" then it's probably a good idea not to try intimidating people and instead be a bit more sincere about their intentions. And above all, be natural about it - nobody likes someone trying toohard no matter what gender they are.

This entire thread is painful. I don't really like the people throwing insults around, and I don't really like the people seeking attention. And I'm sure somebody doesn't like me.

Why can't we just all act like decent human beings and get along?

So good. I would not have been able to watch that video without their commentary. Now I know what it is she actually did before she was inexplicably hired by Mojang.

The fuck, Mojang? The fuck.

Yeah they were saying Mojang...is that the company behind Minecraft?

if so....WHY? :|

This would be a good time for that Internet Anonymity pic lol.

If that's all in irony then it is kind of funny how we are not picking up on it compared to the Sexy64 video of Mega64.

Seriously though. After you've been called 18 different kind of nigger and every racial slur under the sun (and a few that you'd need a dictionary for) you start to get used to it. So if I can suck it up, so can chicks. Nearly everyone's an asshole in online gaming. And if you've got thin skin then you might want to find another hobby.

That's where we differ in our thinking then. In my experience there's different degrees of being victimised depending on context. In a gaming context I'm primarily targetted because of my sex. In a higher education context I'm primarily targetted because of my ethnicity. Different things seem more salient in different situations. There's always a overtone of isms, I guess, but different contexts seem to be targetting differently. I just thought I'd offer out my experience as a female ethnic minority gamer, hehe.

Anyway I'm out, having to think about both racism and sexism in one night is not good for my heart, lol.

Edit: I'm curious (since I know nothing about American life), do black people get those real life reactions like "OMG you're black and you play games!!!", "Whoa! I didn't know there were any black people that even played video games!!!", weird looks when in video game stores, etc?

Yeah back when I used to buy a lot of games I'd get odd looks and comments whenever I'd buy something that wasn't NBA, NFL, gangster or FPS related.

this is just a case of "i'm a woman and i have to be treated better than guys because i have a vagina and you don't"

No it's not. I don't really like the direction of the video but a lot of the shit they say isn't wrong. There is a fucking reason I don't use my mic on xbox live when I'm not in a party. It's a case of as a woman I don't feel like being fucking disrespected every time I open my mouth because some little shit was never taught proper manners and decides to call me whore, dyke, fat cunt, slut, tell me to make a sandwich or tell me to go get raped.

the problem with the whole "girl gamers are harassed" thing to me atleast is that you really can't prove it is any worse than what other groups get. For every story I hear about people leaving games when they hear a girls voice, I've experienced twice as many games where that doesn't happen.

I've been called fag. I've been called nigger. I've been called a bunch of shit on xbox live. Everyone I know has a similar story of putting up with people's bullshit. I don't assume everyone there is racist or has something against black people. You ignore the assholes, because really in the grand scheme of things they don't mean much and move on.

A lot of women just can't get over the fact that the internet is rough or something. There is really nothing you can do to combat it, except demand better moderation, which I've have never heard any female group doing. It starting to come off as if being a gamer girl/girl gamer whatever you are require to become some type of internet feminist, reminding us over and over again that there are assholes on the internet
As if those normal men can do anything about it
, and woe the women who play with us.

Also let me add that xbox live is notorious for this. Almost every story I hear involves the 360 service. If this harassment is that big a deal, maybe it's time to speak up not as gamers but as consumers and demand that MS do something to address the issue. Hell they are just about to release a new console. Now might be the best time. Granted that isn't as easy as complaining online but it might go farther.
