No no, romantic tragedies are fine in and of themselves. That genre gives us fantastic stuff like Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora to appreciate.

I wouldn't really call that fantastic. The core story is fine, but it wasn't great visually and then it had "what the hell?" moments like a doctor physically abusing a patient with no consequences and
a pointless and unbelievable seduction subplot.

Fate/Zero 11

Most of this episode is one extended dialogue, but instead of the explanations of the world's convoluted magic rules that we often get, we have a clash of philosophies between larger-than-life figures. It's visually subdued yet interestingly framed in a way the first episode wasn't, and the climax uses some nice tricks to create the impression of an overwhelming army while clearly not having the resources to be able to create a genuine depiction of one.
I think it's fair to say that after that opening episode they've got better and better at the whole 'talking heads' angle of the show. Perhaps that is partially to do with the way the original work was written but I just feel that pacing is a lot tighter than at the start of the series.

That spoilered scene I like to pretend never happened, cause the show had no qualms doing the same.

I didn't say it was perfect, but I think the core story was compelling enough even with some of the silliness. I think it being a short show really helped in that regard.

Fate/Zero has gotten considerably better over the course of its run, both the writing, which has gotten a lot more engaging than the opening info-dump, and the direction, which doesn't need to resort to characters randomly walking in circles anymore. I hope the second season continues this good path.

Not only that but the choice to focus on Rei and a new character and sacrifice giving Asuka so much screen time was a ballsy choice but something I respect and actually ended up enjoying.

I don't know if the decision to focus on:

A) The most popular girl
B) A character which was created to cater to particular otaku fetishes not already covered by the other girls (large breasts and glasses, in this case)

could really be considered a 'ballsy choice'.

Lol, you're no match for all this bishie, son.

Clearly this calls for a showdown.

See, now you're making it awkward. What if I said Vox and cosmic was more handsome than you? Do we start playing Uno with Skype???

Then we'd both know you're lying, and we would start with Uno but then see where it leads...
hopefully it's to :cajuns

Butler RurouniZei, you should join in on the non-anonymous fun.

Silly Cajun, you deny it but I know you're really a tanuki with a Luigi hat. I know.

Tsuna's hair isn't terrible, and anybody who hates the pompadour is just jealous they can't rock it.

Hmm, you maybe right. That said Asuka is very popular as is, the choice to bring in a new character over her regardless of said characters design was still a risk.

Before I try it, can I get a brief explanation as to why Madoka is revered so much among animu communities?

Well, I guess 'because it's good' isn't really a helpful answer, especially when so many 'good' titles languish in obscurity. Suffice to say it was constructed in a way that really helped it ride the popular zeitgeist.
The Last Guardian will come out before we see Despera.

At this rate Gothicmade will actually come out before Despera.

I'm kind of disappointed that animeGAF isn't taking part of real pic January. Though all of you would be no match for my handsomeness...ess, it would have been interesting to see the real face behind the :cajuns.

But what if we're not cajunig? Or we don't have a real face?

But what if we're not cajunig? Or we don't have a real face?

Oh you are all cajuning all the time. Even if you don't have a real face, you can just post your fake real face.

The only reason I'm not on that list is because my computer broke and I'm moving right now. I WILL RETURN to the top 15 ONE OF THESE DAYS!

Steins;Gate 17-Fin:

Okay, so I'm dropping the 1st person. It was fun, but I don't want to be up all night typing. That's what A Black Falcon is for. XD

Long story short, I loved this. It's been a long time since I started watching an anime, only intending to watch an episode or two, and then marathoned the entire show. I just loved this. I loved the pacing, I loved the story, the characters... and the ending! I'm such a sap, I know that, but I was tearing up and couldn't stop my tears of happiness. :D

I gotta go change my Top 10 votes in the thread... where was that again? >_> *goes to search*

I think the important part of Steins;Gate is that the characters are interesting, quirky and believable even if they are drawn from common character types. As a viewer, Okarin is the hook that gets you into the series and helps sell the world to you. It also helps that it feels like they tell a complete story from beginning to end in just one shot. More over, while it's foundation may be solid character work the show throws in enough 'sci-fi elements' and 'plot twists' to keep the viewer engaged and surprised throughout the course of the show.

As the story focuses on location and one small set of characters you really get the benefit of having everything develop over the course of the show, rather than trying to keep up with dozens of named characters who you barely care about. This restraint makes the story work better than it would have if it was some 'epic'.

Wait, since when was Kanbaru a fanservice machine? Perhaps in the trailers for the new series, but she isn't in the main work.
Lol, all the girls in Bakemonogatari are fanservice machines and the guys who worked on Ben-to probably took their framing lessons from the Bakemonogatari crew.
I asked for GOOD hair, people.
I think Record of Lodoss War had some good hair, well on the girls they didn't really try with the guys.

[Steins;Gate]

Sorry, but I don't follow you...

Faris faintly remembering another world line was surprising / unexpected (and felt like a convenient deus ex machina to me, at the time), yes, but by the time Ruka did as well, one could infer that anybody could get flashes like that, actually (given the right stimuli and a reason to believe they're more than mere dreams or fantasies). And the rest of the story certainly seems to confirm that. Still a "convenient" aspect of the plot, but at least, it's not like the writer went "I don't know how to resolve this thing with Faris, so let's just say she's special and has this convenient supernatural ability!", as I initially feared.
Then, there was no real reason to assume that ability was limited to a specific Attractor Field. Beta Kurisu remembering events from Attractor Field Alpha doesn't break any established rule.

I don't see the problem, there? I see a bunch of problems elsewhere, but not there. ^_^;
Does it bother you that Suzuha didn't mention those flashes, perhaps? I wouldn't assume she knew everything there was to know about time travel...

To have her
come from 30+ years in the future, in a time machine no less, and speak as an authority on the subject would lead you to believe that she knows what she's talking about, yeah. And what it's not what she didn't say that bothers me as much as its what she did say, quite explicitly: Alpha and Beta are two wholly separate lines, with no relation, and can normally never be traversed. I didn't think it was them having semi-reading steiners, as much as it was them feeling the resonances of other inter-world line threads, which is the logical conclusion to come to, given that we were only given examples of recollection within the alpha line, and the series' whole idea behind thread convergence is that they're woven together, but not.

I will concede on the idea behind the reading steiners though. The whole thing
is one big plot convenience with no explanation, so I really shouldn't be surprised to see that it was abused anyway.

Haha, yep, that's about how I felt too. Sleeper hit of 2011.
I don't know if it makes sense to call Steins;Gate a 'sleeper hit'. It's based on an extremely popular and widely praised visual novel that's sold something in the region of 300,000 unit and there was lots of excitement for the anime version.

I think something like Tiger & Bunny would be a far better example of a 'sleeper hit', especially considering the insane number of units it's sold.
Lol, all the girls in Bakemonogatari are fanservice machines and the guys who worked on Ben-to probably took their framing lessons from the Bakemonogatari crew.

Possibly, possibly not considering I'm sure everyone in Bakemonogatari learnt their lessons from Agent Aika.

[Steins;Gate still]

She knows more about the Attractor Field theory than the others, yeah, but she's cheating as she comes from a future where said theory was actually formulated! That doesn't make her a physicist nor a seasoned time traveler. In fact, when it comes to Okabe's time travel methods (D-mails and time leap machine), for example, she's out of her depth.
She's a (part-time) warrior! ^^

My Little Tutu: Friendship is Ballet 09:

YpvDT.png

Mr. Cat is such a lolicon.

Very low-key episode whose purpose was to set up Kraehe vs Tutu. All my fears about the show following the formula of "issue" of the week were unfounded -even today's "guest" character was non-essential to the focus of the episode. I'm sure that's a deliberate choice. The structure works in this case because it lends itself to the exploration of Rue's character. It's almost heartbreaking to see Rue and Ahiru become close friends like that when it's obvious they are going to be torn apart by their infatuation for Mytho.

I love the features on music on the DVD release. They give just an insight into the classical compositions including historical summaries of the pieces and other recommendations from each composer. The ballet pieces are fun too, even if you don't know anything about dancing.
