if the guardian reviewer is anything to go by i should mention that when in Zune any thing with a circle with a triangle in means play the contents, and to play a mix of all your music tap the Zune tile then the circle with two musical notes in.

I don't know if you would have the answer, but:
Would a kernel change (which would entail a more massive change than the already big changes in Mango) require new hardware, or would the existing phones be upgradable once MS adopts a new kernel, presumably in Apollo?

A kernel change alone wouldn't require new hardware, no and I honestly don't see a reason to drop support for the old SoCs, especially when they want Windows Phone in the emerging markets.

Have any new phones been announced for Sprint? After my Surround bit the dust I decided to give Android a chance since I could pick up a good phone for free. And yeah...really missing WP at the moment. The Arrive seems like decent little thing, but if something (hopefully from Nokia) is coming on the horizon I can probably wait.

Sprint could still get something new, but nothing has been announced and since they're not that interested in WP, you'll have to wait a bit.
something I just figured out today while testing two tap reminders....
It always annoys me whe one of my reminders pops up and the screen is locked... why can I not unlock the screen and go to the event directly (like with a toast)?
Well I figured when a reminder pops up and if you have "allow search form lock screen" setting, you can just hold search down and it will unlock and allow you to then select the reminder window above the search. (works with camera and hold home buttons too but not as easily)

oh and come on Windows 8 tablets...my laptop is pissing me off.

For anyone that is still interested, my Titan connected to the Ford Sync right away. I just hadn't walked it through the initial process of connecting it before. Thanks all! It didn't look like it supported texting, but I didn't run any actual tests because it's like 10 fucking degrees out.

Don't see why it wouldn't support texting. My mom uses it all the time with her Focus S (Honda Accord though, but that shouldn't make a difference?).
The Titan and Focus S both work with Ford Sync for texting, (My original Focus did not)
But as I said earlier if you set your WP speech settings to "play audio confirmations" always or BT, you will get a very good voice activated texting solution from your phone over the BT. Better than Sync texting. Only issue is to initialize a text you need to nlock your phone and hold home to get speeech prompt. otherwise, perfect.
I recommend turning text notifications OFF in Sync though going that way otherwise Sync will interupt your phone during playback if you get back to back texts while replying.
BT treats your texts as phone calls so no matter where you are in the system quiets your music and let's the phone talk to you regarding texts or replying.

My theory is the Bluetooth in WP7. For example, when my wife had an iPhone, if she was playing music as she entered the car, the music would automatically start playing over Sync. With WP7, that is VERY hit/miss. What I've noticed is that sometimes it just won't connect, so if I'm playing a podcast and it doesn't automatically start playing over Sync, when I manually give the command to switch to BT Audio, it won't find the phone, even if its on. I have to toggle BT on and off and manually connect to Sync. VERY annoying.
I'm gonna check to see if Sync's had any firmware upgrades lately, maybe that will help with WP7 integration.

Obviously I was joking earlier about the MJ thing but I'm thinking we might see some Superbowl commercials. It's really hard to spend 200 million on advertising in the first quarter of the year*(no college or nfl football, no season premiers or season finales) and I was just reading an article about how Superbowl commercials are going for 3.5-4.0 million per 30 second spot this year and have all sold out.
Showing the phones off in front of 100+million people could go a long way towards giving the Nokia launch a huge push, not going to instantly win any kinds of battles but Superbowl commercials actually get watched and discussed so the timing seems right on this one.
Of course it doesn't matter if they spend 20-40 million on 5 commercials if those commercials suck.
*I get there are retailer/employee incentives involved but they would need to have an insane amount of sales for those to get us anywhere close to 200 million.

try deleting all devices from Sync and the phone sometime and start fresh sometmes that helps.
but yea sometimes connnecitng does not happen as seamlessly as it should but I have never had to reset BT to find it

That thing is the cheap one, the Lumia 800 has a nice AMOLED screen.
To be fair it's their entry level phone, and you're comparing an essentially bog-standard LCD vs a SAMOLED panel.
All their Windows Phones have the Super AMOLED panels bar the Focus S which is Super AMOLED Plus.

They are all Super-amoled, but I believe the Focus S has Super-amoled plus.
Yeah you really can't compare Samsung screen to other phones. Probably what I missed most switching to HTC Titan.
Also I think the Flash is a great little phone and the best entry level Windows Phone. For $50.00 it is a steal and even better when they have 1 penny promo (not sure if it's still going).

Anandtech ususally does quality articles and those take time, which means they aren't "first". For sites like Engadget or The Verge that's out of question.
I picked up a Trophy to give the Windows phone a test run and it's pretty cool so far.
The only question I have is is it true you can't stop music/podcasts but only pause them? It's incredibly annoying to see random items paused when my phone is locked or playing in the background and me not knowing since I usually have my volume turned off when I'm not using a headset.

Yeah it's true, I've got an app pinned to my start screen that when I click it stops it properly, it's called Stop the Music!

Their 710 review is on time with the other big sites reviews. So why do they have a better review than Engadget and theverge? Its because they do a better job and they are consistent on what they write. And not because they have more time. They don't deduct points from a budget phone because its made from plastic and don't do the same for a high end phone like the gs2 for example

MobileSyrup has apparently confirmed that the 710 will be the launching in Canada soon followed by the 900. Pretty sure we already knew this but it is still nice to hear. I hope one of the phones comes to Fido so I can try to convince my wife to get one. She has been talking of getting an iPhone lately (currently has a BB)

The 710 has the same specs as the best spec'd devices we can buy
yeah, it has the same internal specs, just lesser screen, etc. So it should run it exactly the same
The 710 is not only the same specs as the best hardware out there right now, but it's significantly faster than the original devices released at launch (like the Samsung Focus) which still run the identical software perfectly smoothly.

Yes, but that's because of build quality, camera quality, screen quality, and amount of storage compared to the other devices just released.

Settings / Speech / Use Speech when phone is locked allows you to access Tell me with the screen locked
unless you meant to power it on...
