Honestly? It can happen, but they'll likely be jumpy all their life and will only remain attached to you and your immediate family.

But that said, occasionally you'll get a wild cat that's incredibly tame, even from the age of kitten.

Growing up, we had a hole in our shed and mother cats would come in, have kids, and sometimes leave or get hit by a car. I think there was a 70% ratio that the kittens would be wild or tame. I wonder if timidity is a heriditary trait. So when they were wild we usually let them come and go, but if they were tame we gave them to friends or shelters or took them in ourselves.

Yeah our cats hate other people. They won't even let me pet them sometimes. I think the trick is to get them near you when they're young and they'll likely stick around.

This has unofficially turned into a cat thread.

Looking at your avatar, I'm having a hard time figuring out where your eyebrows stop and your hair begins. Do you have a naturally low hairline? Instead of a forehead, you have a threehead?

I only ask out of bald man envy.

Haha no I grow out my bangs. I've had bangs for so long my forehead is super white, plus I'm on the bigger side so I look dumb with really short hair. My hair generally comes right down to the top of my eye brows.

I'm far from a cat expert, but I lived with a couple for a month once that had a cat do the exact same thing. Had been doing it for years, they had quite a few cats where only a few were their own, they could come in through their garage and it would come in and eat and most of a few would stick around, but this one cat didn't like getting touched at all and usually ran away quickly again when it had gotten food, they said it had been doing it for years and never really got used to them no matter what they did.
This cat is even worse, he's a straight up asshole. I usually find him somewhere in the street where I play tennis, it always grabs my attention by miauwing and then I play with him a little while and it follows me home, when we're home I feed him something and he just lies down until he gets a chance to get outside, and when does get the chance, he just blasts off. I stopped trying after 3 or so times when my neighbor said I wouldn't ever be able to keep him inside

Yeah, when I do finally get a cat I think I'll just get one as young as possible

Okay, I'm gonna leave for while. :/

i still think that yoshi is a dog in cat disguise (which basically makes him the best cat ever). it seems like a lot of siberian cats are like that.

but one dog-like trait he has that drives me nuts is that he chews on and bites EVERYTHING that is even remotely chewable.

now, for dogs, it's not that big of a deal because you can just put the items out of their reach, but with cats, since they can climb, it's not as easy.

i just put my glasses up on the counter, turned my back for 2 minutes, and caught him chewing them. and yes he left bite marks...

my desk is constantly littered with half chewed things. right now: a half-chewed nail file, 2 blocks of chewed post it notes, a chewed korean book, a chewed wedding invitation.

:(

I love my fishtank. This was when I first set it up with baby fish and baby plants.

Yeah I think I've seen your tank in the aquarium thread. It's purty! I just got a "newbie" tank for Christmas so I've been lurking around in that thread, educating myself, for a couple weeks now. Looking forward to getting started, and I really hope to have a large tank like yours someday. It's something I've always been interested in doing but never had the money or space for.

Do you keep goldfish in that thing? How is it to maintain?

No, Goldfish are naturally very dirty fish.

I keep South American Cichlids in there, which are aggressive freshwater fish. The average size of the fish I have in my tank at max will be about 12". I have 9 fish in that 125 gallon tank pictures.

As far as maintenance, its quite easy. I do a 25% water change every 2 weeks with a tank siphon connected to the kitchen sink and I clean the filter about once a month. Thats about it.

Maintenance on a goldfish tank would be more because, as I said, they are very dirty fish and cloud the water pretty easily if you dont stay on top of it.

Yeah, my brother kept this big, beautiful goldfish in his room when he was in high school and that tank was always filthy. He worked pretty hard at it, too.

Yeah, I posted that pic and the picture of my breeding convicts and their fry. Sadly (for them at least) my pair of Jack Dempsey ate all the babies.

I've kept a fish tank just about consistently since I was 13. I had a small break from them and then found my big tank on Craigslist with stand for $100. I couldn't pass it up. Buying the rest of the stuff can get quite expensive as good filtration is a must and that can be a couple hundred on its own.

Good luck on your tank and feel free to throw me a PM if you have any questions. I've got a lot of experience with trying different things with success and failure.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind! My brother-in-law is a huge fish nerd, he might even fly up here to help me get it set up. He actually maintained a large fish pond in the backyard of my wife's childhood home for years, and it was always stellar.

Oh well the goldfish in the bowl idea is out the the window.

Oh wow, that's a pretty big tank - If I had a smaller tank would I have to change the water less frequently?

I'm just researching into clean fish, I'm seriously contemplating this.

Well.... no.

Think about it like this. Say you're put in a room with 4 other people for a month. That room is sealed off with recycled air. There are no bathrooms in which to remove your waste so everyone has to just go where they please. Food is delivered to you by dropping it on your heads and whatever hits the floor will stay there. After a while, that air your breathing is going to get pretty stale and unhealthy. Same concept applies for fish water. Frequent water changes are the keystone to keeping healthy and happy fish.

Haha, he has that look 24/7. He's a bit dumb, but supersweet.

Dumb cats are best cats.

I used to have a cat named Nacho that was possibly the stupidest cat in existence. He was not graceful at all, unable to jump even small distances without hurting himself, and would not clean himself regularly. Our other cat would hold him down and clean him until Nacho started doing it himself.

Our cat now, Dr. F. E. Lixer M.D., is a dick. Straight up. He's one of those cats where if there is no food in his bowl he will look at you and, then knock your shit off the desk, then look at you again.

Asshole.

Perhaps their personalities are reflections of the names you give them

When I was a kid, I had a cat that would sleep on his back on my pillow.
The worst part is that he usually woke me up by drooling on my face. :S

I used to have a cat that would sleep on my bed all the time, even when I was in there and I always used to make her get up and leave. She was very fat (probably a good 25-30 pounds) but was a very nice cat. I feel really bad now because she died. I was young and stupid.

When its time for bed, Sumo is right there beside me within 5 minutes. Every night.

We had a cat named Marshall that was the sweetest cat you'd ever meet. It was funny too because he wasn't our cat and was a neighbors, but he just kept coming over and never left so he kind of adopted us. He would sit there and let you pet him for hours and he loved it. The only thing annoying is that he would constantly cry until we gave him milk, and once we did he would make terribly smelly farts. He would even try to climb into the refrigerator. Unfortunately my mom made him go home at one point and a week later he died. What pissed me off about this was the fact that the people didn't tell us about it for a week and then my mom waited a week to tell me too when I finally asked about it. He was such a nice cat.

Mission Impossible 4 was so good!

Easily the best in the series, IMO, and as good an action movie as I've seen in awhile. There was so much creativity on display. Same way I felt about The Incredibles.

Was that concept BMW as sexy as it looks in the trailer?

Man, I'm living with a dumb cat right now. She's super sweet, though, and that dumbness gives her unparalleled bravery. She also doesn't understand if she's in trouble, unlike her brother, and thus never holds a grudge against people for stopping her fun, and will go back to whatever she was doing like I never made her stop.

Her brother, OTOH, may be the smartest cat I've ever met. He knows exactly what he isn't supposed to be doing, and only attempts such things when he thinks no one is paying attention. Also, he's a cat that loves to play fetch. Sometimes, I'll get tired of playing with him, and throw the object outside my room and close the door on him when he goes after it. Invariably, I'll find said object sitting right outside of my door the next time I leave the room. Sometimes, I'll play tug of war with him using a long twist tie under our doors, and if he pulls it out of my reach, he'll just slide it back under the door with his paw so that we can keep playing.
