more on topic: i just made a pizza, dough and all. feels good man. fuck a digiorno.

I just need to start cooking the sauce from raw tomatoes* and I'll be making pizzas from scratch as much as can be done without a cow and wheat field out back. Do you have pizza stones and a wooden paddle yet?

*I use a can of plain, unsalted tomato sauce right now and add herbs and spices to it.

I've tried many times and failed many times. I just can't get the dough right. :/

Here's the recipe I use: ISL's Thin & Crispy Pizza Dough

I'd never made bread before and I aced it first time. Second time I used a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon for the yeast and it was a bit yeasty (I enjoyed it). Have been making it at least bi-weekly for over a year now, and it's never not good. Have even frozen the unleavened dough balls for later use, which worked out fine (give them lots of time to thaw and rise).

oh and you don't need to use a pizza stone (though it is kind of better for the dough). A round metal sheet will work fine.

I did but post-recent move the stone was sacrificed and no longer usable. It was a bit nicer but eehh you don't really need it IMO.

Seems like everyone's having pizza tonight. Except I'm not cool enough to make my own and after one of the earlier posts about chain pizza eh... :/ At least it wasn't Pizza Hut...

If you can find a good local place, those are often untapped gold mines, in my experience.

Beautiful Mediterranean place around here that makes great pizza on garlic bread. Never eating at a pizza chain again if I can avoid it.

I like this one, but it's a little blurry. The bottom one is really funny because you both have such different facial expressions.

It's weird, there's a chain called Crust in Australia which is pretty much killing it as far as actually making good pizza at franchises. I rarely order from my local stores now even though there are some exceptional ones in the area.

The social constructs around alcohol really interest me.

1) It's perceived as a good thing to be a "heavyweight" who can drink more before becoming extremely intoxicated. Why? Not only does this mean you need to ingest more calories to produce the same desired result, but it means you have to spend more, too. Often a great deal more.

2) It's perceived as weird and strange to not drink when everyone else is. People will ask why you aren't drinking, and assume or ask if you've had issues with alcohol in the past. Why? Let's say I don't like Avocados. People would be much less puzzled by this, and would not remotely consider that I must have some sort of psychological block with avocados if I don't eat them.

3) It's considered amusing or even appropriate to boast about how much you drank last night. Why? If I came on to GAF tomorrow and informed you that I ate 20 donuts, would you be as impressed? I think the general reaction to that would be disgust.

Of course, I understand how much of this works on a societal level. These "why" questions are mostly rhetorical. I just find the particular and unique position alcohol has attained in our society to be interesting. People treat it differently than any other food or drink and also differently than any other narcotic.
Well, the reasons do ultimately come back to societal ones, but for the moment we can touch on why they're so deeply ingrained in to our society.

Do you remember the Mead Hall part of Beowulf wherein he was drinking more than the other men and they'd watch in awe as it didn't affect him? So we're talking minimum circa 9th century where being able to "hold your alcohol" while consuming massive amounts of it is considered a sign of masculinity and virility as literally everything Beowulf does is a sign of masculinity and virility.

The Bible has 75 warnings against alcohol. In order to live a pious life, you avoid it. So people who tend to drink more are considered more fun and less strict. It's a temptation of sin in that way. So that leads to bragging about how much you drink and how much you drank the last night. Noah got drunk and it ruined his family, hypothetical Frat Boy gets drunk and he had the time of his life, he's fun and an alpha male.

At least, that's the way I always viewed it. I mostly drank because I can't dance unless I do.

Fantastic, I am going to have to try both of these recipe's.

At least it wasn't Pizza Hut...
I am not a picky guy at all but that is pretty much my only rule when it comes to pizza.

Yeah the place I ate from used to just be local but they recently branched out to a few more restaurants so I still trust them... just barely.

Why do you hate Glasses-GAF?
It's not hate. Just love for a different type of glasses...

I too am part of glasses-gaf.

Coincidently, I also ate at a place called Samurai today as long as we're talking about food.

I'm a secret member of glasses-GAF also, though I'm vain and like sunglasses so much that it would be more accurate to say I'm part of legally-blind-GAF. That makes no sense now that I realise my avatar is wearing glasses, but I usually don't bother with them.

I generally dont use glasses either, but i only have problems seeig far away and problems rarely crop up from me being unable to see.

I think one day I'd like to get contacts or something.

I love my glasses but I wonder how I'd look both not wearing them and being able to see.

I have some contacts and hate them. I cannot for the life of me ever get them in and they make my eyes hurt. I can see pretty well without glasses, just not far way. I do need them to drive though (legally not physically).

I have had contacts and prefer my glasses. Although part of the reason for that is I tend to panic if I try to put anything near my eyes. When I had them I was a pre-teen and had my mother do it (it was actually less scary then.) The other reason I don't like them is constantly having to clean them and worry about scratching them. Way more trouble than their worth, at least for me.

This is me too. The only really awkward aspect of it is that I have to get really close to tell if someone is attractive or not. Not like Eskimo-kisses close or anything, but I've become a master at finding interesting reasons to walk over to arbitrary parts of the room.

I mistreat glasses so badly. The ones in my avatar photo here are so badly scratched it's like a vaseline filter.

I broke the arm off of mine including the metal piece so I couldn't glue them back together. My issue with seeing far aways is that whenever a cute girl appears I usually squint to check her out and all my friends now make fun of me when this happens. I've cut down on it recently.

And why aren't you wearing them in your avatar?
Because I am also a member of contacts-gaf. If I upload another pic I'll show my support for glasses-gaf.

What did you have there?
Steak, shrimp, rice, soup.
And coke. So addicted.

I too prefer my glasses but usually because I'm too damn lazy to bother putting on my contacts. If you don't like to clean them and stuff I recommend using dailies. I use those since I don't wear contacts everyday and it comes out cheaper plus I don't have to worry about cleaning them since you just use them for a day.

I just want some for when I go out to bars or concerts. I can't see myself using them daily.

I actually do too, but only the frames. I think you'd have to work pretty damn hard to scratch the lenses, but the frames... I'm always sitting or stepping on them. Fortunately mine are wire so they just bend back into place, but with the pair I'm wearing now I've had to repair them so many times I don't think they'll survive another accident.

See the relocation technique is a good one, it means that if you decide to talk to her you're already halfway across the room. It's efficient and logical as well as effective.

Ah see I'm always doing things like tossing them on the desk where they land on the lenses and slide across a little, so the actual lenses are really badly damaged. My frames are thick because I know I'll sit on them and break them otherwise. Last time I was at the optometrist I asked her about reinforced lenses and she said they were a good idea, then when I told her about how badly I treat them she glared at me and said "they won't help if you're going to be so careless" and left the room :lol

Falling asleep on your glasses is not fun :( They're bent so the lenses aren't at the right angle and text thats far away is a lot harder to read.

Yeah but I'm terrible at approaching girls cold. I need an opening which reminds me that I had the perfect chance yesterday. I was walking into the grocery when this cute girl next to me was about to take her cart back I didn't realize until after I passed her that I totally could have taken it for her and possibly chatted her up. I felt so dumb.

I don't do contacts, I literally can't put them in and take them out. I've tried tons of times.

I was in a low budget horror movie once where I had to wear contacts, the girl who did my makeup had to put them in and get them out for me. I think it was pretty unpleasant for both of us.

Also can't get laser eye surgery because of the shape of my eye.

Unfortunately they don't make them for my eye type, so I would never be able to get them! Or maybe they do now, I don't know. They didn't at the time anyway. I'm so used to my glasses I don't know if I'd want to change. And it still freaks me out to put them in.

Actually, for awhile in college I was wearing color contacts (prescription of course.) My eyes are naturally blue, but I wanted to make them brown! It was interesting to do for a little while. I love brown eyes, but I've finally accepted my blue ones.
