Congrats to JPP, All Pro season

Joining Allen on the defensive line were ends Jason Pierre-Paul of the Giants, and tackles Haloti Ngata of the Ravens and Justin Smith of the 49ers — who also placed third at DE; the 49ers used him at both spots.

After seeing the passion of the other Lions fans here I feel bad.

I'm still scarred from the 1991 NFC Championship game. The ensuing playoff losing streak followed by the Matt Millen era didn't help matters.

I'm pretty sure this pessimism is a defense mechanism at this point.

Perspective on the upcoming game:

It’s amazing to me that the Saints and their fans and the media and everyone from the Pope to starving children in Africa to Hitler’s ghost could be so cavalier about this game. They all laugh and point to the Lions mistakes and personal fouls and all that s__t the first time they played, but even with all that, and even with a suspended Ndamukong Suh and a bunch of other injuries, the Lions were knocking on the door in the 4th quarter, threatening to tie the game. Watch that game again. The amount of terrible penalties the Lions piled up was f___ing absurd. Yeah, some were earned, but the 19 pass interference penalties called against Nate Burleson were pure bulls__t and you all know it.Remember the Saints flying offsides and blocking the Lions field goal attempt at the end of the first half only for the refs to run off the field like they just witnessed a murder and were too afraid to do or say anything about it? Remember that the Saints received 100% of the breaks while the Lions were crucified by Pontius Goodell while the masses jeered and chucked rotten fruit?Remember all that?Good. Now remember Matthew Stafford smiling like he just shot down a MIG and then buzzed the tower even though all this bulls__t was going on, and remember him throwing the ball downfield, again and again, and remember the Lions coming and coming and coming, like some sort of Terminator, and remember that you couldn’t stop us by yourselves. Remember that and keep overlooking the Lions. You f___rs.

and

I was driving on Sunday night listening to the radio broadcast of the Cowboys-Giants game. The announcers, Dave Sims and James Lofton, were discussing the upcoming weekend of playoff football and the fact that they’d be calling the Lions-Saints game on Saturday night.

Lofton said something to the effect that this will be a rematch of the Sunday night game last month when the Saints “blew out” the Lions.

That surprised me, but I figured that Lofton must not have watched the game film. Then Sims mentioned the fact that the two of them called that game for Westwood One as well.

OK. Now I was thoroughly confused. If Lofton called the first game, didn’t he technically watch it? Isn’t that part of the job description? And if he watched it, what part of the game (other than the final 14-point margin) could in any way, shape or form be construed as a blowout?

Let’s recap. The Lions played an awful game. They lost their starting running back, Kevin Smith in the third quarter. They didn’t have Ndamukong Suh, who was sitting out the first game of his two-game suspension for stomping Evan Dietrich-Smith. They committed three horrific, inexcusable personal foul penalties, which either prolonged Saints drives or killed Lions drives.

Nate Burleson set an unofficial NFL record with three offensive pass interference calls. (I say unofficial because I have no idea how to look it up.) And Calvin Johnson was held to six catches for 69 yards and zero touchdowns.

If it weren’t for Matthew Stafford playing with a healthy right hand for the first time in a month, the Lions would have lost the game by 30. And if you listen to the national pundits previewing this game, that’s exactly what they think the final margin of victory is going to be in a New Orleans romp.

So again I ask, what game were people watching?

And I suppose I know the answer
. The people were watching last Sunday when Matt Flynn played the role of Drew Brees better than Drew Brees could have played it as he threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-41 Packers win. Based on that game, and that game alone, everyone seems to think that the Lions have no chance to win this Saturday. They are a bigger underdog this week than they were a month ago even though Suh will play and their defense is healthier than it’s been since perhaps week one against the Buccaneers. All of that is based on what happened in Green Bay. None of it is based on what happened in any of the other 15 games, and none of it is based on what might happen on Saturday.

Look, I’m not predicting that the Lions will win. The Saints are 8-0 in the Superdome this year and Brees is as good as anyone in the NFL, maybe better. But the Lions certainly have a shot...

1 of 4 QBs to ever throw for over 5,000 yards and 40 TDs vs. an above average season for a linebacker.

Stafford never had the stat's to make a comeback though. That's my biggest problem with it. It's not a comeback if you were never really there.

I had no idea this was charted. I don't care much for football stats in general, but this at least confirms something I noticed all year. Rams QBs took sacks quickly. The protection breakdowns often lead to just jailbreak rushers, not blitzers.

It really showed up as a % with Feely and Clemens b/c McDaniels abandoned the seven step sack once Bradford and most of the lineman got hurt. So the unblocked guys were crushing them on 3 steps instead of 5 and 7 steps

I look at it as a comeback because of all the talk that he couldn't make it a whole season. Most reasonable people were saying that if Stafford could stay healthy, the Lions offense would be pretty solid.

When people are questioning weather or not you can stay healthy a whole season and then proceed to pass for 5,000 yards and 40 TDs while leading a team to the playoffs who hasn't been to the playoffs since 1999, I think it would constitute as a comeback

Looking a little further, I don't know who else makes great candidates for the award; but EZ is probably on to something bearing there is someone else missing.

Matthew Stafford - First full year basically. Previous years weren't exactly great stat lines to make this a comeback. More like this should be his launching point.

Alex Smith - pretty much no change, another not really a comeback as much as finally showing up

D'Qwell Jackson - On the up for his first 3 years, injured 4th&5th, this year he returns to his 3rd season form

Pretty hard to argue with really. Now, there could totally be someone better than him, if someone has a name to throw out there.

connor barwin for comeback player of the year. Tore his leg up horribly last year in the season opener, switched positions and had 11.5 sacks for one of the best defenses in the league.

It's actually 4 minutes. And would you rather it be country or something? of course it's a rap song why would it be anything else?!
was just saying it seemed excessive, but i didnt know the time stamp was wrong.

Tony Romo maybe?

It seems like this would be a good year for a Packer to win what with our ridiculous number of players hurt last year. Our offense is just too spread out for any one player to statwhore and get noticed.

Congrats to Joe Thomas on being named to the All Pro team again. The only player keeping a Browns fan sane for the last few years.

Also, DQ should definitely be comeback player of the year. Dude missed two seasons in a row to alternating pec tears.

He has definitely come back from the most in my opinion. Stafford is a bitch, he'll have another season ending injury soon then maybe he can be CBOY in 2013.

The injuries D'Qwell is coming back from were the most severe and he's played exceptionally well on a God awful team. I'd vote for him. Maybe if Stafford had engineered a comeback against the practice squad I would have been swayed, but he choked hard on the final drive. Meh. Guy's a loser.

oh wow. had to edit my post above, I didn't even count the 2nd year missed since he had no 2010 stat line. I don't see how he ends up not getting it at this point.

tebow christ we really did nearly have a 4 qb 5k season. just tebow christs all around.

So special, such an amazingly fantastic performance from Drew Brees...and the three other guys that did the same fucking thing.

I will say, of the four, Brady and Stafford are the most impressive since they threw for those yards generally in close games. Every yard they gained (for the most part) was critical to overcoming the awfulness on the other side of the football. Brees? Needed what, an extra 100 attempts to break the record. Clown school.

I'm a bounty hunter, no light saber. Honestly, it's just a fucking dope RPG right now. I'm playing mostly solo and it's a blast.

When you get to a high enough level, I highly recommend finding a group to do the Foundry set of flashpoints if you're at all a fan of the original KOTOR games. You'll run into some familiar faces.

Patriots have received permission to speak with Rams OC Josh McDaniels, will speak with him this weekend, per a Rams source.
Hopefully the Pats can get McDaniels. I really don't want another O'brien situation.

25 years how ny QBs have gotten close.......my bad they changed the rules this year to make it a passing league.

since before you followed football, around early 90's I'd say, the NFL has continually altered both rules and rule interpretation to continually assist the offensive passing game. Last major change to coverage rules was probably 2006 with a stricter interpretation of illegal down field contact past 5 yards. Last couple of years brought stricter interpretation of QB roughing and low hits on a QB. This is significant of course. Brady and Brees are both great QBs, but they've greatly benefited from the era they play in.

In short, Marino literally has no reason to congratulate Brees.

So Fisher says he'll make his decision early next week. Rams interviewing Ray Horton today. The Rams had said that if they went with a first time HC, they would get the GM first, who would participate in the HC search.

So it would seem like Horton could just be a Rooney Rule interview, and the Fisher "indecision" is a ruse to give Horton's interview legitimacy. OR, the Rams know Fisher is going to Miami, and Horton gets a Tomlin-like shot of being the first of the Plan B interviews, and could blow away the team and become the front runner. Which isn't highly unlikely, as I'm not exactly sure the Rams have a Plan B. Seems like all their eggs were in Fisher's basket

of the top 20 seasons. which is at 4626, which i'd say is pretty close to the holy grail so to speak territory. 11 has happened in the last 5 years. 6 of them this season, it's obvious it's a no hold barred passing attack league and we don't know what to expect anymore

seriously, get some perspective people

Marino's record stood quite awhile, and in retrospect, it wasn't really that long.

Foster, Cushing, Brown and Joseph named to All Pro team from Texans. Chris Myers was robbed at center.

Arian has some serious leverage for his contract this year.

I would say they are calling offense pass interference more. The defences are all so more complex then Marinos days. Howmany teams ran 3-4 . How many team back then blitz the house.

You think so?

I was thinking about this earlier today after reading the Grantland piece on the Texans run game, standard stuff but it got my brain churning. Would his production be similar on another team? System back or productive regardless?

Or is this season a blimp, the short off season made the defences behind. So you look at the prior season how many QBs topped 5000

Good point. ZBS offense has a rep for making a RB look really good. One reason a lot of people dont hold Terrel Davis in a very high regard for HoF votes.

No matter what though the RB STILL has to actually run the ball. If I remember corrctly Arian is a limited free agent. Other teams can make offers but Houston can match offer.

3-4 goes back to the 70's in the NFL ( no clue about it's historical use at other levels), some of the best pass rushers and punishing defenses were in the 80's. This isn't an argument I could take seriously.

In the mid 80's, a DB could keep a hand or elbow on a receiver all the way downfield. This is a huge difference.

Clotheslining receivers was allowed probably until the early 80's. Defensive ends could strike O linemen in the head during their pass rush. Safeties could spear receivers downfield with their helmet.

These are things that generally slow a passing attack.

He has a good thing going there, dude should stay even if someone offers more.

the record that deserves the biggest astericks is Strahan's sack record. Stupid Favre totally gave him the last sack. Quite shameful really.

Goodell and Kraft have ruined the nfl and are turning it into PAC-10 football. Defenses can't do anything and QB's get every fucking call there way its insane.

Hope everyone enjoys 66-63 games!
