So if this is a knockout game, why is it in Houston and not some neutral location?

The teams were assigned seeds(1-4 are division winners sorted by W-L record and 5-6 are the two teams with the best records among non-division winners) before the Playoffs started. Since the Texans have a higher seed(3) than the Bengals(6), they get to play at home.

The only playoff game at a neutral site is the Super Bowl itself.

It's based on playoff seeding. In each match-up, the team with the higher seed gets the home game. It's meant to put an importance on winning games once a team has qualified for the playoffs. The team in each conference with the best record has home-field advantage (that is, all their playoff games are home games) until they are eliminated or reach the Super Bowl.

However, it's not necessarily based on record: the top four seeds are automatically given to the four division winners. That leads to scenarios like Denver, which finished 9-7 and won the AFC West, playing a home game against Pittsburgh, which had a better record but only qualified for a wild-card spot.

The thought behind that is generally, it is easier to win at home than on the road, so it's a reward for the higher seeded team.

Ah right, cheers. That must be tough for those low seeders. Still, I'm sure they'll take it over watching on tv at home.

Look at the Pittsburgh vs Denver game tomorrow

Pittsburgh is 12-4, Denver 8-8, you would think the game takse place in Pittsburgh but nope

Denver won their division, Pittsburgh didn't Baltimore did, even though both have the same 12-4 record, Baltimore won against Pittsburgh twice, due to divisional rivals play against each other twice, one at home, one away

So a 8-8 got them #4 seed, and Pittsburgh was #5, flawed, yes, but hey that is how it is set-up

You missed last year when the Seahawks went in as 7-9 as Division Champs LOL

Yes ... but we would not have that run without it.

Love that pressure!

NEW ORLEANS -- This is why teams want home-field advantage.

Lions players arrived at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome just three-plus hours before the kickoff of their wild-card game with the New Orleans Saints. Several Detroit players -- including the team's quarterbacks -- tried to take the field to warm up, but were moved to the sideline to allow the LSU marching band to rehearse their pregame and halftime performances.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford stood near a wall by the end zone close to Detroit's locker room and opted not to throw in the limited space on the fringe of the field. He told me he'd been waiting for more than a half hour to take the field. Stafford was good-natured about the delay, but he didn't appear happy about it.

He told me every time the marching band appeared to be wrapping up, it dipped back into its rehearsal session.

The band cleared the field at about 4:40 p.m. CT, and the Lions' quarterbacks immediately went near midfield to throw -- only to have to navigate around military personnel rehearsing flag maneuvers for the National Anthem.
